The Lion Monument names victims and survivors of 10 August 1792, but gives no information about the dramatic events. This story was first told by veterans. The Lion Monument Museum (opened in 1886) exhibited figurines and paintings of Swiss mercenaries and the painting (Tuileries Palace Insurrection) (1889, 5×17) visualized the tragedy. It drew little attention and, in 1895, was replaced with Alpine images. The museum was renamed (Alpineum) in 1901.

The title is the message; In praise of the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss Guard. The Helvetii in the inscription are the Swiss man who, for some 300 years, were recruited by private military entrepreneurs as mercenary soldiers in the service of the French Kings. Between the 15th and 18th centuries, more than 500,000 mercenaries served, 60 percent of whom never returned home. In 1792, the lucrative trade collapsed. Only the names of officers are listed in the inscription.
