This video was shot at the end of a task during the Nordic Junior Gliding Championships 2018, held at the fantastic Räyskälä in Finland.
www.rayskala.fi/english/home
The famous Räyskälä Runway 12L has a lake just by the end of it, that gives the opportunity to make some awesome approaches if the glider has enough energy. I was coming home with high speed and had the glider filled with water, so I decided to hit the deck and go low.
My landing on the airfield was not that pretty, bear in mind that the glider still had a lot of kinetic energy in it.

@@skiddybipbop6844 Kinetic energy is the energy of a mass in motion, thermal energy is a huge subject (thermodyamics) but with reference to gliders, ( to simplify): After releasing the tow, there are 3 ways to get lift : ridge lift, what is caused by a wind blowing against a steep hill or cliff face; wave lift, which is riding winds that occassionally occur many miles away and have a wave form that can lift a glider thousand of feet; finaly "thermals" which are ascending circles of rising air caused by localised areas of ground being heated by the sun more than surrounding areas, eg a newly-ploughed area of dark earth, tarmac etc. Glider pilots aren't the only fliers who use thermals--eagles, buzzards, crows, seagulls, albarosses and many other birds use them to gain height: it sure beats flapping thier wings to gain height! Whan I was gliding I was always looking for birds thermalling, ie, circling in the column of warm rising air, and I'd head for them and join the circle, and tey to hit them with my wingtip. Animal lovers, don't get triggered, it never happens, they are far better fliers than man and machine, they FEEL where the maximum lift is on the tips of their feathers, and so indicate to we humans where lift is strongest.

@@Jigaboo123456 how safe are gliders to fly or ride in? Compared to “airplanes” with engines ?
@Jigaboo123456
@Jigaboo123456 3 жыл бұрын
@@user-nw2si7hu3u Generally, providing the glider pilot if well trained, the glider is safest. No fuel to explode or ignite either in flight, or ina forced landing, also they have a much lower landing speed than the vast majority of engined aircraft. The wise pilot (whether of a powered plane or a glider, keeps withing the limits of the aircract and the weather. With gliding this means always have enough height to spare to allow you to reach a safe landing spot.

I fly high wing, powered aircraft...The smart aleck in me: that's terrifying and appears to be unsafe as hell. Any wind deviation, or even a hiccup at the stick would've put you in the drink at about 90mph...The pilot in me: that was exceptional flying and a great demonstration of staying cool, knowing your plane, and landing on a (very) narrow strip. Tip o' the cap from me. Very skillful.

The Blytonian - I have to say you're right. As a pilot myself for a few decades (not gliders but light aircraft/aerobatics) and after speaking to other pilots, I've had a few say to me that despite being careful 99.99% of the time, they've had a few close calls where luck paid a bigger part than judgement as to the outcome, but fortunately they're still here. Stating the obvious however, and as we're all aware, the greater the risk taken, the bigger the chance of an undesirable conclusion. Human nature though - no-one's perfect.

@Bartonovich52
@Bartonovich52 5 жыл бұрын
That’s the dumbest fvcking thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I’ve never flown a glider... but I am _ACUTELY AWARE_ of my energy state in every aircraft I fly. This energy awareness allowed me to _FIND_ and _QUANTIFY_ lift without a vario in order to get very underpowered aircraft well above their absolute ceilings... and to complete a forced approach back to the runway at not much higher than rope break height (as described by the glider pilots who witnessed it) in a 7:1 glider. Most power planes don’t have a simple lever which changes the glide ratio from 40:1 to 4:1 (or whatever it is with the spoilers out) and change nothing else. They also aren’t as efficient and can’t cover up stupidity as demonstrated here. The issue here-which I’m not surprised such an in tune soaring pilot such as yourself missed-is *_TOO MUCH ENERGY!!_* It’s a good thing this fool had room to roll out... though he nearly destroyed a wingtip or main gear hopping over that taxiway. Good thing there wasn’t other aircraft or people or a fence or a ditch in his way. Do you want to know what good energy management is? Putting your aircraft down exactly where you want it, at the speed that you want it. That’s how they fly the Space Shuttle... and that’s how I fly my aircraft.

In MN we have a lot of lakes and every pilot knows there is descending air over them. That’s why this guy carries so much extra airspeed. It’s just his insurance policy. It made me extremely uncomfortable. But it was well planned and executed like he had practiced it often. I would play my cards different, but would not have a cool video either . Thanks for the vid!

that runway is aimed right at the lake. kinda forced to fly over it. what part of MN you in? i was cannon falls neck of the woods, red wing, hastings, ect. my uncle once had a dental office in fosstin and a cabin at angle inlet.

Back when I was a kid flying fixed wing, the trick my instructors and all the books told me was that when on final approach that you can tell where the plane will meet the ground by observing which point out in front of the plane is still, that is, not moving either up or down in relationship to some bug mark or imaginary reference that's clear in your own mind. Watching the video, and applying this technique, well, the still point indicated that the final approach was taking him into the drink. I couldn't read his airspeed, but, yes, it was possible he was intentionally diving and carrying a lot of speed. Or he just made dry land by riding the greater efficiencies of Ground Effect, and gliders with their light wing loading can float on ground effect better than anything else.

ah yes...other than flying in 'wave' the use of 'ground effect' was always a Favorite of mine....it was always good to show a student just how far you could go in a real emergency if needed. Not a lot of comments here realise that this was a perfectly safe and stable approach in a 'ground effect' run....remember these craft have amazing glide ratios...not like a powered aircraft where if in trouble the old saying was' throw a brick out and if you stay above the brick...you're doin ok!' Really experienced pilots can do GE runs to about 40 feet at very high speed pull up, gain like 600 feet and do a short base a final..easily whilst dumping water at the same time. If you don't know about the nuances of flying sailplanes...don't comment.

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! :) I've never flown a glider but I'm sure having way too much speed on final coming across the water like that was a little better than coming up short! Nice video.

LegendLength I don't think anyone who says that believes a landing where you trash the plane, run over a person and lose an arm - but you still have legs so you can walk away from it! - actually takes it that literally.

Brent Taylor Art It would be well above stall speed, little or no air brake, whilst utilising 'wing in ground effect' - flying low above a surface drastically increases the glide range and reduces vortex drag off wings.
@robertbarlow6359

Diving on speed from low altitude to use wing in ground effect was once demonstrated to me by an instructor, as a way of extending final glide slope if pilot dangerously drifts to far from airfield during circuit. I was caught out once, by changing wind direction and increase in wind speed, whilst conflicting with other gliders on circuit - I barely cleared the tops of trees . It's definitely not recommended practice to approach too low - unintentionally - but using wing in ground effect once got me out of that dodgy situation, in which I would have ran out of height and speed and stalled into the trees.

Aerobatic gliders maybe (watch Luca Bortossio), but this one is made for flying efficient at high speed. Due to the long wingspan the rolling speed of gliders is very slow. No match for eg. an Extra 300.
