Holy s**t! The 'glider pickup' launch looks crazy! I'd hate to be in the pilots seat when the tow rope fails :-(

Just found this post. {5 years late} Did you know they also did this behind Japanese lines, In the jungle, during the Burma campaign? braver men than me.

I'm surprised that actually worked, that's a huge impact force that could snap the rope, or rip the front of the glider off... probably felt like they hit something from inside the tow plane

I don’t think they are using weak links on that method.

Inside the plane they had a kind of hydraulic drum system to dampen the force of the rope during initial acceleration of the glider.

@@BertDaanjeYou can see it in a clip called Glider Snatching by Pathe News.

I notice they failed to tell you if the pilot in the failed glider snatch was OK. I'm guessing by the damage he wasn't.

I cannot believe how flimsy these american gliders were. Would I have climbed into a Horsa? with trepidation yes, Climb into a waco? not on your bloody life.

There's a video on YT called Flying the Horsa Glider, and an old GPR lad describes the Waco as well. Worth a look. 👍
