Now you're messin with my old sports. I flew hang gliders for 30 years. Never got into Paragliding but I do have a bunch of stick time in Sail Planes. Taking off is really fun. So's landing as you only get one chance to do it right. I've been to 17,500ft in my hang glider and flown over 100 miles. I also skydived for 30 years and have gotten up in my canopy just like you would in a paraglider. I've gained upwards of 4000 feet under my skydiving canopy. Two reasons I've had to come down. One, the harnesses are just not made for long flights and your legs go numb after a bit. Two, once the jump plane takes off again you have to get down and out of the way of freefalling jumpers. Love the air. Thinking about getting an ultralight now.

The tug's performance seemed at little "stately" but then I realized the density alt must've been 6000 ft, so of course. My club tows with a 150 HP Citabria, and an O-540 powered Pawnee. Due to fuel costs, management decided to use the Citabria as much as possible due to the lower fuel burn. Until someone worked it out that the Pawnee actually used less gas because it got to alt faster than than the increase in fuel burn. The Pawnee is an absolute hoot. You feel like you're in a F4U Corsair with the seating position and long snoot. When you get good at towing, and with an experienced glider pilot on tow who can crank and bank with you, you can actually work the thermals in the tug.

7-8yrs of hang gliding and best bunch of folks I've ever met--with a couple exceptions. Good times...good memories. Some rowdy stuff a time or two. Circling up with hawks or eagles so many times 60' away. See their eyes looking at you, their in-board feathers fluttering near-stall. One time I was in a thermal with two Golden Eagles right with me and one cut the circle and flared and hung is talons out 20' in front of me...'she's mine'. Lots of cool expeiences but that will always be my best memory. So many others...but that one was special!

@@jhmcglynn I believe it is about 10 miles to the North of the glider park. I saw a few gliders in the air while I was flying. Most of my flights were tandem with the instructor, but they let me solo the last day. As I had previous airtime. We flew for nearly an hour tandem, and I had a couple awesome solo flights too. So the conditions were great. Gliders are another dimension altogether.

it would be so cool if you had a radio to talk to folks on the way down. It can be done. And one of those little flasks of water with a little tube like bike riders use.. We live near a sailplane airport and they fly up to 7000 ft from say 1000 ft . I work on a mountain they fly around called Saint John doing radio. I've seen them fly right past me up on the mountain in Northern California.

I had the great fortune to fly in a glider. It was a fantastic experience. You can feel the vibration of the tow plane through the tow rope. What they don't tell you is when you release the tow rope, it makes a very very loud bang. I'm sure I peed a little. lol The pilot I was with laughed and said they don't tell people about the loud release because they like to see the reaction of the passenger. You can't describe the sudden silence as the rope falls away and the only sound is the air around the glider. I would recommend anyone to fly in a glider. It's a experience you will never forget. Fly high and safe Jonas and Silvija !

That beep, beep, beep thing is what tells us when we're rising (or sinking) is called a variometer :). A very useful instrument when finding and coring thermals.

Great video, Jonas! It was exciting watching your launch and scratching for lift. Been there done that, but in a hang glider. Paragliders seem like such an awesome way to fly. There’s something to be said for the slowness and precision of those wings. I only flew a paraglider once from a winch tow. I had no experience, but the flight went well. Just up and down though. I flew hang gliders for 39 years until giving it up about 5 years ago. You have to try it! With your flying experience, you’d be a natural, I’m sure. You’d love the speed and maneuverability of a hang glider. I miss it sometimes, but for the last several years before deciding to pack it in, I wasn’t flying nearly enough and my confidence was suffering because of it. But to see the excitement of this experience on your face and you scratching for lift brings back so many fond memories. Never flew King Mountain, but it looks like a perfect fit for the sport. Good on ya, man!

Where did you fly and learn to Hang glide ? I learned at "point of the mountain" near SLC Utah. I started in 1976 the year I graduated from HS. Now I fly airplanes.

@@danblumel Cool; I started on a small training hill in northern Ontario Canada in 1977. I flew Point of the Mountain in 1989 while on a hang gliding trip, among several other sites during the trip. I posted a link here to a trip to Wallaby Ranch in Florida that I took with a friend, who actually taught me how to fly, way back when. Wallaby is an aerotow site. Check it out if so inclined.

When I started in Gliders way back in '62 I went up in one with an open cockpit. . This was launched by a winch cable pulling it skywards at a very steep angle. As it was on a freezing February day I shivered with both the cold and nerves. Regards, Jim in NI UK

What a beautiful spot!! Must be strange gliding off a mountain with no engine noise. Amazing scenery! I wouldn't know where I should be headed for lift - I know ridges usually, but not always as I've seen in some videos! Nothing height-wise like that anywhere near me, so doubtful I'll be doing that any time soon. Right down the road from here there's a glider operation - guy tows it up with a kit built ultralight! Pretty neat to watch. He tows them WAY up there, then they release the rope. Sometimes the glider will be up there a half hour or more! Pretty amazing! The first time I watched this, I started chatting with everyone and forgot the gilder was up there! The tow pilot had long since dove down and landed. Seemed like almost an hour later, here comes the gilder in for a landing! That was wild! I swear the wife and I had that exact same air mattress. I had one similar to it as my bed for the 2 years I lived in Phoenix, lol. I must've got a Wednesday mattress - It didn't leak, LOL! Anyway, this was a fun vid, Jonas & Silvija! Much appreciated!

..... of the things going on today the only things I have done is been a passenger in both a glider and the tow plane. The two things I remember was in the glider it was so quiet that you could hear what the people talking on the ground were saying. When in the tow plane the pilot informed me that we would feel the glider release and then we were going down. You could feel the release and the pilot says we're going down, put the stick forward and I swear to god we were free falling and seemed like we only leveled off just in time. The tow plane was a two seater, one behind the other. Apparently the military had used them for recon missions. ... thx for the memory jog .... you have to have a ride in a glider especially if you can get into an area that has thermals .... what a great couple of days you had .... the best matrasses are the ones that are an inch maybe two thick, and when you unroll them they inflate themselves. They ease the hardness of the ground and are pretty durable ..... Grew up in Victoria BC and there are bluffs along the water looking towards Washington State. Watched hang gliders take off there, some took of and others went over the edge and plummeted 100 feet to the beach below, alright, sorta glided. Then there were the para gliders, they filled their chute as you did and the up draft at the bluffs lifted them off. The hang gliders that did it right and the para gliders would stay up for hours drifting back and forth along the coast line. To me the para glider was definitely the way to go. The Idea of jumping of a cliff with a big weight strapped to your back just did not ring true to me, those that went to the beach had to disassemble and lug it all back up the stairs .... thx for the share ... as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

Good times! Funny while you were gliding around I was looking for places to land and take off in a bush plane. I used to fly gliders years ago. I flew a Blanik L-13 full aerobatic. Loved it!!

Fun video. The tow plane seemed to take a lot of runway but then I flew gliders from Herlong Airport in Jacksonville FL. I think there’s a substantial difference in the density altitude 👨🏻‍✈️. We were starting at an altitude of 80 feet which I think is one of the highest points in Florida😊

The way John describes that Hill is exactly the way Boulder Colorado is set up. The half way beginner launch, the 3/4 launch and the top launch are really good for Northeast, direct East or Southeast. Plus there's a South ridge launch that's best for East/Northeast. Anyone that hasn't been there has to try it! It's the first place I flew in Colorado when I got back from Santa Barbara and whoa..! What a learning difference!

Relax, sit back in that harness! That little bit of aerodynamics makes a big difference when you are scratching for lift. It will be strange how hard it is to lean back when you want to go forward. Of course there is many other things that can be done to stay in the air longer, but this is easy and free. Love your vario.

Started glider flying out of Driggs Idaho on the west side of the Tetons. (If you are going to start why not do so among the most beautiful mountains in the US)! Anyway, as I beginner I always found flying off a tow more difficult than actual mountain thermal flying. By all means find a seat in the front of a two place glider trainer like a Blanik. Even if you don't continue with lessons it is an experience you will never forget.
