If I dye my hair red, did I hate myself as a brunette? And then if I go from red to blonde, does that mean I hated myself as a red head?? NO. ONE CAN LOVE THEMSELVES IN MANY STATES OF BEING, WITHOUT HATRED. This is a simple concept.

It does feel very Jehovah's witness-y about it. Like a Cult that encourages anyone who leaves to cut all ties with them and to shun them. Whilst not as extreme as cults like the Jehovah's witness it does feel like that. You're fine as long as you engage with the groupthink but the moment you break that, they will turn on you and shun you at a moments notice.

I’m losing weight now but when I was in the body positivity community I 100% was. I used body positivity as an echo chamber. But on the same side, when people called me fat/to lose weight I had a hatred of “fuck you, these people are just like me. I’ll do what I want”. I wish I had someone kind and caring to help me lose weight. It’s hard right now but knowing I could’ve been a lot closer to my goal weight makes me sad.

I struggled with eating disorders from my early teens-early/mid 20s. I’m finally able to eat without feeling horribly guilty. Back then ppl would compliment and asked me for advice because of how I looked. But they not know how unhealthy and full of self-hatred I truly was. I 100% agree with you in that you can be any shape and size and be so unhappy/insecure.
@KatieNicolexx

As a bigger person growing up I did not fully understand that skinny people are insecure too. I always thought that they were skinny and had no reason to not like their bodies. I would dismiss friends who had issues because at least they weren't fat (like me). At the time I was so consumed in hating myself that I couldn't look beyond that. It wasnt until I had a friend have an eating disorder that I actually had to face that smaller people have problems too. All that to say alot of bigger people who hate there bodies are triggered by smaller women speaking about their problems because they cant see past their own insecurities and body hate.

Really I'm a fan of body neutrality. Bodies don't need to be beautiful or healthy to have inherent value. I support everyone making the decisions that work best for them. A lot of body positivity is abelist and toxic and no one deserves to be bullied for their own choices they make for their body. I am on my own weight loss journey also and I don't think I am more or less valued based on my size or health.

Yes! Like there are body conditions that aren’t “pretty” (and also beauty is subjective), but every human’s body is worthy of respect. Let’s learn to love ourselves without trying to pretend we love things we don’t. You don’t have to like your cellulite to love yourself and you don’t have to be beautiful in anyone else’s eyes to be worthy or their respect.

As someone who has battled restrictive anorexia for 9 years, these supposed 'fat positive activists' that actively condone extremely overweight/obese people who are trying to lose weight as a lifestyle and health choice are IDENTICAL to the ProAna 'thin positive activists'. They are both extremely dangerous ends of the weight spectrum and neither is conducive to long term wellbeing and health. If I had made a KZbin channel at my thinnest (72 pounds) and actively ripped into ANY one other than those that are emaciated, I highly doubt my channel would not have been reported. I see absolutely no difference other than they are at opposite ends of extreme. P.s - 107 pounds now! Happier, healthier

Super overweight or super underweight. Nothing in between. Your body knows when to eat and when not to. I know you will find your balance. You WILL settle in the middle - healthy strong and ultimately living a life. Anorexia reduces life to nothingness. Obesity also reduces things you can and can't do . Ryan DesJardins - VSG'd Insecurity. Not one of the rabid fat acceptance people are truly accepting of their weight and comfortable with their food choices and intake. The only way for them to console themselves about this insecurity and inability/unwillingness to make healthy choices is for them to tear down the people that are doing something about their weight and health. If they were truly happy with themselves they wouldn’t bother with other people and their choices. Just another reason the fat acceptance and body positivity in regards to obesity is a complete farce.

Just a day or two ago someone shared an article about Japanese tech company making hyper-realistic dolphin robots with the hopes of replacing captive dolphins at dolphin shows around the world. And half the comments were like, "why is this even needed, still just wrong". Like I'm sorry, but are you gonna go protest the Natural History Museum now for having an animatronic dinosaur? What could possibly be wrong with using robots for interactive experiences mimicking animals? Really does absolutely nothing to make people want to be part of the community, or interact with vegans, when you have to be rude and judgmental over a robot.

For me, body positivity is about focusing on what our bodies can do over what they can't do. It's about seeing our bodies as important and worth caring for, no matter our current situation. It's about recognizing that there is nothing incompatible about seeing ourselves as good enough and striving for improvement. That's just me, though.

With all my respect, I had been living in the nightmare of anorexia and bulimia more than 15 years. Such a behaviour and a philosophy "eat whatever you want in enormous quantities" did NOT help me. Just switching anorexia with bulimia. You loose sense of hunger or fullness. The only way is mindful eating /made from dietitian/, till you regain those feelings. You need real nutritious food, because you're so so malnourished. Usually you want junk food but it won't help you, because it triggers binging - till you vomit. IMHO it's not self love, care or body positivity.

I learned about the FA community through you and I didn’t know how toxic it was. Smh. I though it was about accepting who you are as person, learn about your behaviors and environment that got you to high risk point and then slowly(marathon style) lose the weight to get a healthier weight(not a fitness model image). I guess it make sense there’s a dark side. There will always be polarizing views in every area of life. Just how there are negligent trainers in CrossFit there is also competent ones. Everyone wants to “pick a side”..some high school stuff. But it also seems that those who attack those that are trying to better themselves through weight loss ,are too focus on gaining more viewership/monetization than adding value to their community. When someone attacks another person for making positive changes for healthier stronger version of themselves is a huge RED flag. Period.

Lately I have been shying away from media influencers because everyone has gotten SO full of themselves and their “messages” and the online drama was insane. I happened upon these videos of you both and I was soo so happy to see you both are clearly still grounded and level headed. Love both your messages and that you’ve avoided these insane echo chambers and self absorption every other influencer has fallen into. Congrats to you both for speaking your truths and standing your ground and staying sane ! Sending love from San Diego ❤️

The eating disorder topic is so important. I have anorexia and I trigger myself by watching fitness/weight loss videos that are meant for fat people. I "imagine" that they are talking to and about me when talking about calorie deficits, work outs and restrictive eating and I follow their advide. When in reality I am underweight, malnourished and overdoing it with cardio to the point where I am damaging my body. This behaviour is wrong and I am in therapy because of my ED and because of the way I imagine these weight loss videos being about me. I think it's very similar to obese people reading/watching videos that are meant for people in anorexia recovery. They imagine it's about them and follow those rules when in reality they are just damaging their body with it and ruining their health/life expectancy. But the huge difference is: they are called "body positive" when they follow rules that aren't meant for them because they are harmful to them. I am called "sick and in need of therapy" when I follow rules that aren't meant for me because they are harmful to me. In reality both of these behaviours are wrong. Bodies are different, people are different. I need to be told to eat without restricting and to find joy in food again without being deadly afraid of it. Obese people need to be told to find joy in something other than food again and start finding a healthier balance with it. Food is a difficult und emotional topic for so so many people. Overeating and binge eating are almost always tied to stress, trauma, learned harmful habits as a kid or other highly emotional things. Just as undereating and restricting. Food can be the only comfort for some people but it can also be the only way to control their lives for other people. Both isn't healthy. Food should just be food. A source of energy, sometimes yummy, sometimes necessary, sometimes a way to build community or memories. But never more than that. Never a source of fear, never the only comfort in life, never the source of euphoria or dread. Obesity, over eating and comfort eating are all disordered eating habits. They should be treated with the same care and love that restrictive eating disorders are treated with. Doctors and non-fat people need to hear this for sure. But the biggest enemy of aknowledging those eating disorders and treating them right IS the fast positivity/body positivity movement. They would rather die than get proper help. I try to love my body the way it is now. And I try to continue loving it when I recover, no matter what it will look like then. But out of love I try to help my body become more healthy and strong. Right now that means gaining weight. In hopefully a few months it means focussing on nutrients and movement. In some years it will mean regular check ups at the doctor and still movement and nourishment. When I gain an unhealthy amount of weight it will mean losing weight again. There is no one way to be positive and loving towards your own body, there are no rules that apply to everyone. Heck, there are no rules that apply to anyone in every stage of their life. The body positivitey movement has become a mindless entitled cult that seriously scares me because it reminds me so much of the pro-anorexia community. The scary difference is that the pro ana community stays anonymous and hidden while the fat/body positive movement gets treated like they are fighting for civil rights or something.

Having lost over 160lbs and in recovery from binge eating disorder, I'm not a huge fan of the movement and never felt I quite fit in there. That's why I started my youtube channel as well. I understand that everyone has to start somewhere to move towards loving their body, but I really prefer the idea of body neutrality. Even if you can qualify something as positive the opposite of that is negative. How I feel about my body is a barometer for how I'm feeling in other areas of my life. It's a nice cue that I'm having emotions in some other area of my life. I've also done Eating Disorder advocacy, and there is a huge push towards Body positivity which I don't believe aligns with all facets of eating disorders. As someone with BED, i was obese, and killing myself with food. My weight loss was a huge part of my recovery, but there were many limitations put on me in terms of how I could share my story by the National Eating Disorder Association. Not to mention, Body positivity had to do with body diversity in regards to ethnic diversity. It just feels like the movement got co-opted. It's a tough topic.....

I love hearing she mention the oversexualisation. This idea that you need to be "sexy" at any size and on top of it a very specific type of "sexy" is just the way the fashion and make up industries have to reach a market that was closed to them before. I am neither overweight (I used to be, but I lost 20 kg 30 years ago), nor asexual, but I am still bothered by the message that tells you that you need to be sexy, which translates into you need to show your barely dressed body and wear as much make up as possible, and your value resides on how much you are sexually desired. Of course I am of a certain age and I do not care personally, but the fact that this message reaches my kids really makes me worried.

I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again: “body positivity” didn’t used to be like this, and it SHOULDN’T be like this. There are good reasons for a movement like this to exist, mostly to do with a) teaching people how to divorce self-love from body size, to promote good mental health and combat depression/low self-esteem, and b) getting the systems in place to get people healthy instead of shaming them. The body-positivity movement should be campaigning for society to stop treating obesity like a punchline, a moral concern, something to point fingers about, etc. ...and declare obesity a public health crisis. We don’t shame people for having cancer or heart disease, we try to get them healthy. That is what we should be doing with obesity.

I think what she means when she’s talking about the average sized people who say “body positivity as long as your healthy” is that Ana sees body positivity as everyone deserves basic respect and should be able to love themselves without getting shit regardless of race, weight, health, looks etc. so she’s saying it doesn’t really make sense that these people are in that community. But that’s why she’s saying the community in general makes no sense because the HAES people and the people who think unhealthy people don’t deserve basic respect are in the same community. HAES is bullshit but I agree with her that it’s shitty to think a person who’s 500 doesn’t deserve to be treated like a human being, That doesn’t mean that they’re healthy though. Same thing with jerks like Tess holiday and fargirlflow judging those who want to change their bodies for health reasons, especially when those two get lip injections and Tess photoshops her pics! Everybody is a hypocrite. You and Ana are genuinely smart and great people to have on this platform! Helping keeping me motivated to keep my healthy lifestyle going❤️

Body positivity is for people who can't change how they look: without arms, legs, scars etc. Not fat people. I've was over 110 kg in age of 16, and I know that to be this size you need to eat like crazy all day long, you think about next meal constantly. She should swap a meal with normal size person and she would see how muchtch she actually eats during a day. Doing this exercise that she is doing, runing, jumping etc will not help lose any weight, it's only put huge struggle on her legs and spine who it's already suffering. Diet is 80% of a success. If you have binge eating disorder you should visit a doctor and do something about it. Not making people accept your poor life choices.

olgab170444 i think the whole point of anas video is that the “body positive community” has a lot of different meanings to people. I’m not saying you have to think being obese is healthy because it’s not at all, saying that as an obese person, I’m just saying that what Ana thinks body positivity should mean is you can be happy in your skin and be treated with respect regardless of size or anything else involving physical attributes. That does not mean obesity is healthy I didn’t say that and neither did Ana. I agree that the body positive community (which I am no way involved with at all) has been taken over by fat people that gate keep it from average sized and skinny people and the main message is gone. You don’t have to accept anybody’s lifestyle but I think everyone deserves basic human respect. If I hated myself because I’m obese, like you think I should, then I wouldn’t care about my health and wouldn’t try to lose weight. I think treating people kindly regardless of their health is way fucking better for helping people want to lose weight than being a dick treating them like they aren’t worthy until they’re healthy in your eyes. Like I said you don’t have to ‘accept’ unhealthy habits but you should treat them like a person and they should be able to like themselves even if they aren’t healthy.

I was a drug addict for almost 30 years. After I got clean I went up to almost 270. I remember walking down the street and passing a guy who was shocked, remarking"Wow! Has she gotten huge!" He had no idea that I had spent over 7 months in recovery centers, was dealing with cutting, my children being abused etc. I've been clean almost 27 years and food is still a huge issue. Depression, anxiety, self defeatism all can rear their ugly heads and I'm 68 years old! But progress comes in waves. And life gets better. So stop by step we love ourselves, my dear. Step by lovely step. Get rid of everyone who hurts, only keep those who love and support you. That doesn't mean they always have to agree with you. I'm talking spiritually support you. 😍

It's so difficult. I will literally forget to eat for days. I have PCOS, my metabolism is super slow, and I just don't get hungry. I live in my semi so it's really easy to forget to eat. When i was 11, after I gained a bunch of weight from the PCOS, I saw a nutritionist who said I needed to eat. I needed to eat 6 small meals a day, kick start my metabolism. I was willing to try this, but my mother was a former runway model and this just didn't make sense to her, so she would make little comments as I was eating an apple as one of my meals like "eating again?". I'm 35 now, home for the time being because of covid (I have asthma and Lupus on top of the PCOS. I lost my dad to covid and nearly lost my little sister. Mom had it too but she was fine), and decided to try the eating 6 times a day thing again. Couldn't manage 6, but I can do 4 or 5 (small breakfast, piece of fruit, small lunch, veggies and hummus, small dinner) and actually lost weight! I had to set alarms to remind me to eat, and I don't think I can sustain this once I'm back to work, but it's interesting to see this actually works...for ME. I'm sure this wouldn't work for everyone. It's like intermittent fasting. That actually makes me gain weight, but it works great for other people. I think it's ok to throw out what works for you, give other people ideas, but don't ever think something is a cure all for everyone.

I think that a lot of insecure people tend to project their own issues on other people. A part of self-love is looking at yourself, working on your flaws, and being willing to change. I’m on my own weight loss journey, due to some health issues I have that are connected to my weight. Body positivity is attached to a lot of peoples' trauma, and becomes their identity, so when it is approached in conversation it is not discourse with intent to understand, but rather largely listening with intent to defend. I have lost 100lbs and still am 60 pounds overweight. The body positivity community has been VERY condescending and disrespectful to me. I completely agree with her definition of body positivity! Toxic positivity is a real thing. We should be affirmative and edify people working to love themselves and their bodies without railroading, condescending or disrespecting people. I love her. She is ON POINT. This is a huge struggle for me. I have body dysmorphia and have shared similar experiences with her. She definitely deserves to be a figurehead in that she is perfect in articulating the nature of the issues. The "savior" complexes and virtue signaling among the "community" is unbelievable. I struggled with binge eating a lot, started over-restricting, lost 80lbs and ended at a healthy weight, just to start binge eating again. I’ve never had a healthy relationship with food and I’ve used the fitness community as a way to kind of mask the feelings underneath, and convince myself the negative body image thoughts (keep going to get smaller) are for health benefits as I used to be 200lbs (now 115-125 at 5’2)
