The thing about glitter is unless it’s made of biodegradable material, it’s horrible for the environment. Most modern forms of glitter are made of plastic. It’s already small size means glitter particles enter the environment as micro-plastic. Plastic glitter is just as bad as micro beads from cosmetics.

Hi Mel! Thanks for watching and for bringing awareness to this issue. I have been doing some research on this too, since glitter is everywhere...schools, Christmas decorations, holiday decor in general, floral arrangements, etc. From what I can find, arts and crafts glitter can be metal based (even older glitter was glass based) and from what I understand, not just plastic based; but that doesn't necessarily make it better. I agree it is important for the arts and crafts community to get involved on this issue. I will continue to do some research as well! Thanks Mel! 💕

Yes, lots of vintage glitters were made of glass and metal. There are measures we can take to prevent glitter falling off items. Gloss mod podge, gel mediums and even hair spray can be used as a fixative. From what I understand, it’s more harmful for glitter to end up in waterways. Tape is handy for getting glitter off of surfaces instead of using water.
