Just thought I would add, I was in a max prison for 2 months under 2 counts of false money laundering charges. Baby oil or any type of oil was strictly prohibited in commons. Plus many of these things would be impossible to do if you are in a solitary cell.

If they have acces to the commissary which is like a supermarket, they can buy what ever they want and store it in their lockers. they also have microwaves and that is how they cook if they don't want to eat what is served on the cafeteria. I worked for a federal jail where I live and it is just like that. One of the inmates showed me how to make mofongo with plantain ships, water, salt and a "cubito" which is like a seasoning we use in Puerto Rico. Crumble the plaintain ships, heat the water with salt and the "cubito", mix it all together until its like play doh and form the shape using a soup bowl upside down and there you have the mofongo. stuff it with whatever you have like chicken on a can or tuna. (gross with tuna, I know...)

Commissary. If you have money/ something to trade in prison, it works. Lotion for conditioner, skittles for lip stain, etc. it's not from personal experience, but I have some close family members who have been there.

When you go to jail around where I live, every inmate receives an indigent pack to hold you over until you can get commissary. It has a small pencil, comb, nasty deodorant, toothbrush toothpaste toothpaste. I guess it's different everywhere. We could also order colored pencils too.
