Glittering World presents the story of Navajo jewelry through the lens of the gifted Yazzie family of Gallup, New Mexico-one of the most celebrated jewelry making families of our time. The silver, gold, and stone inlay work of Lee Yazzie and his younger brother, Raymond, has won every major award in the field. The exhibition-featuring almost 300 examples of contemporary jewelry made by several members of the Yazzie family, opens November 13, 2014, at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center, located in the U.S. Custom House near Battery Park.

That attitude - acknowledging mistakes, constantly learning, always humble - is what leads to true mastery. Quite different than what people expect.

In this day of age I think restarting my late step dad's work would help in these times.

These men are well beyond mere masters, they are both artisans and craftsmen of the highest order. My wife has a number of pieces of Navajo jewelry. It is so beautiful, it could almost make you cry.

I grew up in northwestern New Mexico, in Shiprock, surrounded by excellent silversmiths. My connection with this work is organic, and part of my soul.

Some of the best I have ever seen in New Mexico - or anywhere in the Southwest. There are many talented jewelry-makers in the area, but the Yazzie family is extraordinary. The time spent on each piece in designing it - the attention to detail - choice of stones all make Yazzie family jewelry one of the best available choices!

I am very happy to finally see an image of Lee Yazzi in this video . I have a matching belt buckle and bolo by Mr. Yazzi, signed with his mark, similar to the belt buckle shown here at time 1:12, that I purchased at Grand Canyon in 1988. They represent his work as a younger man, but they are just as lovely as all of his work since.

Wow , what more can they do to make their work better ? Gotta look up what they are making today and see maybe a more abstract direction? That's some work there that's like what can top that , dang that was cool.
