Just been hit by this myself. The contract on my current car ends in December. I was planning on replacing it so started test driving my shortlist of replacements with the aim of placing an order in a week or two. Test drives were no problem, but all the companies that I looked at said the same thing “no new cars this year”. This means my contract will expire before a replacement can be sourced which means that I will have to buy my current car. This has totally changed my approach - if I’m going to have to by my existing car I may as well keep it for a few more years. So looks like the chip shortage has lost the car industry another sale. I am open to a nearly-new car but when I looked the prices are sky high, presumably because that is all the car dealers actually have to sell. I am seeing approved used cars, a year old, that are only £1 to £2k less than the full list price of new.

I'd read some reports on this subject but appreciate the depth of your video and explanation of events leading to the shortage. I'm taking delivery of my Hyundai Kona in 2 weeks time ....... but not sure yet if the Zappi home charger I've ordered will be installed by then ......... as production of these has also been affected by the chip shortage!! 🙄May have to resort to public charging or even the granyy charger if necessary.

They're using less microchips in cars?? GOOD! That will make them less expensive to maintain, and more likely to work longer without a stupid microchip making the whole thing fail, and without causing us to have to pay exorbitant fees to take them to a specialist at a dealership. Sometimes, less is more. We don't need all that extra crap just to get from point A to point B reliably.

I've been struggling to source Bosch IMU sensors recently. Had to change the design for an alternative part as the stock vanished within a week. We've resorted to purchasing the component at almost 500% the price.

I work at Texas Instruments, and our fab has been running 24/7 since the start of the pandemic, even during the blackouts. The main problem is: 90% of the completed wafers for the auto industry, (mind you, TI only handles a small percentage of auto components, the rest are manufactured outside the US) HAVE to be shipped to China, Japan or Taiwan, to be cut down from the wafers and installed onto the circuit boards (which the majority are not made in the US) This takes weeks and sometimes months to achieve. High end chips get flown on cargo planes, low priority chips are shipped on cargo ships. I could go on a diatribe about the downsides of outsourcing components for industrial manufacture, but I personally feel it’s already a lost cause. (Kinda like how people in the US don’t realize that a tariff, is a tax that WE would have to pay upon import of products, yet are clamoring for higher tariffs on imported goods. It’s so aggravating!)

The Texus issue also impacted global plastics supply’s. Especially PP and PC these are used a lot in cars, so even if they had enough chips there’s plenty of other force majeure’s that is restricting manufacturers.

That one supplier in Taiwan is called TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Company). It’s so much of a giant in microchip production that they have their own set of rules regarding the structural restrictions and design rules regarding the building of those microchips, that is globally embraced by other producer companies as well. The most recent one that I know of is called TSMC 0.13 however there are many others. 0.13 standing for 0.13μm, or microns. A couple of years back I had done my undergrad project, which was about this same topic, by following the 0.18μm technology rules by the same company. One other factor that caused the car-microchips (for the lack of a better term) may be cryptocurrency market exploding. With so many people buying into trend of “crypto-mining”, which requires massive computational power, high power processors such as high end GPU/CPU’s are on a higher demand than ever, probably also making chip manufacturers prioritizing these markets.

Hi Mat, chips for automobile industry is highly specialized, it needs to withstand all different environments without glitch, that’s one of the reason why it takes time to manufacture. The computer in the new Tesla model S P100D is perhaps the most powerful of any vehicle. In fact the computer is so powerful in that Tesla that it can and does support games for kids in the back seats! More countries need to be self sufficient in producing chips, vaccines and other essential products. Outsourcing everything is not good for countries and their economies. The PPE shortages and supply chain problems at the beginning of the pandemic are a good example of what is wrong. Funny thing i am engineer of this 😄 the secret mostly developed on Embedded linux. We keep the kernel of unix then develop our interface on embedded software (you call firmware). There are too many microcontrollers in today's cars. Lights, sensors and many others have their own microprocessor and peripherals, sometimes a full microcontroller and additional peripherals. They connected the operating system with sophisticated transistor to transistor level communication technology. Normally you can build simple operations system on even basic controllers but microcontrollers have limited capacity, it can't handle all of the car. So we design our pcb s and use unix scripting, sometimes we use QT for designing our interface but many companies have their own systems. Then you control your car. We actually implement a good machine to machine system example in your cars but you mostly use user interface as a controller (set your sit position etc). Actually it's an good example for base of technology. You can build anything with these steps. You can develop a router or modem or rocket or tv box :) if you want to be one, you need to know about computer science and electronic engineering :) captain out

VAG group have had more issues than mentioned. The Seat and Golf 8 have been delayed by upto a year. I know of well over 3 dozen people who ordered new golfs and all have cancelled, myself included. Spoke to bmw and they've had nearly 40 customers in the last 8 weeks cancel and go to them. Not sure if its the chip shortage or not but seems likely. I know the 8 has had constant tech issues down to just not having its info system turn on at all, which seems pretty dangerous.

And dealerships are being beyond stupid in their pricing. Just about all the brands are selling their cars at MSRP or higher to try to use this to recoup their losses during CV-19. Problem with that short sighted thinking is that people we realize that they dont really need that new car and will hold onto a car if its working and just needs maintenance. So, they may decide to buy Hyundai rather than their normal choice and then lose their loyal customer. And then the dealerships will be back where they started with too many cars in about 6 months.

The chip shortage is indeed due to majority of the production line slots going towards computer manufacturers. New phone launches were also delayed by a few months and Sony is still struggling to manufacture the PlayStation. First preference now is for health care devices, then to computer manufacturers. The other reason for the shortage is most of the chip manufacturers are fabless i.e. they outsource the microchip manufacturing to foundries like TSMC, Global Foundries etc. This demand has put a lot of strain on the resources. Some companies like Intel have internal foundries so they are not as badly affected but then again, I am not aware of many Intel SoCs being used in embedded systems.

I’ve heard that all Volvo XC 90’s will be electric/gas hybrids with the 2022 model years. If turns out to be the case that will be my leading contender as gas mileage is a big consideration for me in new cars. If not the XC I will give the new Pathfinders a look.

Probably similar to the WLTP situation that resulted in VW’s lead times reaching 6 months on some models due to factory closures. Cars are still being built, it’s just impacted so some models may have the usual 12 week or so lead times. Dealers are packed with new cars so I don’t think it’s that widespread for every model
