Global chip shortage: How microchips became one of the worlds most precious resources

Күн бұрын

If you’re having a hard time buying a PS5, the global semiconductor shortage is probably to blame. A shortfall of the little chips is slowing down big industries.
Whether we're talking consumer electronics, cars, medical devices, airplanes, smart appliances or wearables, their common component is chips.
The coronavirus pandemic has changed consumer behaviors. We're buying personal computers, new phones and tablets, so we can work from home. And to cope with the lockdowns, companies are continuously upgrading their digital infrastructure to enable remote working. All these purchases are driving up the demand for chips. At the beginning, a pandemic came with an estimated economic downturn and industries such as automakers slashed chip purchases. But the economy in East Asia bounced back sooner than expected with more demand for cars. And most carmakers keep limited inventory. So right now, they're buying.
So as the coronavirus crisis reshapes supply and demand, chip companies are scrambling. And if there’s an industry that can’t simply ramp up production in a hurry, or ask clients to do without their product for a while, or shift around parts of their manufacturing rapidly, it’s the chip industry.
Here’s a look at how chips became the “oil of the digital age” - and the geopolitical complications surrounding their supply.

Ya, they are the main manufacturer for our most high tech chips 10nm down to below 5nm. Not all our chips need to be down to that level. Many more smaller companies can make 20nm types, and that sort of lower tech level is used in cars and other products which don't need PC level processing power

They are starting to design chips that only work for specific reasons rather than just general chips like the ones Intel make.

This doesn't explains why there is a shortage in auto industry. The answer to that was simple, the auto industry with their just in time supply philosophy is what is screwing them up. So they cancel the chips order when the close down assembly line, and now that they are ramping up assembly, the just don't have the chips because they cancel the orders for it.

This video is bad in two points: it makes a confusion between the issue of chips shortage in the global market; and the geopolitics of over-dependence of goods monopolized by foreign countries. None of these, however, have China to blame, at least not in regard to chips production. In fact, the US's sanctions, even if correct, are to blame for some shortage as certain Chinese companies are prevented worldwide filling in some market gap. TL;DR: if you blame China for everything, you lose credibility on articles on China when it is to be blamed.

They blame demand, but they don't mention consumerism. Produce open source mobile phones, bigger motherboards with wider copper tracks, supply design and repair documentation for electronics repair - and demand will become lower. But that means decrease in sales, and the current demand is just a spike - a great moment to sell electronics more expensively. This one season of demand will pass, then another one might come after a few years

Chips are absolutely vital for the economy, but comparing them to oil does not make a lot of sense. You either have oil in the ground, or not. If you have it, you may need to invest a ton of money to get it, if it is deep underwater, or in freezing conditions. You only need the tech and the money to build a chip manufacturing plant. It can be done anywhere.

Moore's law still has to follow the laws of physics. The atom is about 0.1nm in diameter, there are about 10 atoms in 1nm which means there are about 50 atoms in a 5nm transistor.
@tylerdurden3722
@tylerdurden3722 3 жыл бұрын
That 5nm refers to the transistor gate width in a mosfet transistor. A 2-dimentional feature, with a width (a 1-dimentional measurement) that can be measured. Modern chip transistors use FinFETs. Which uses a 3-dimentional gate that can't be measured using a 1-dimentional measurement. So "5nm" is a marketing term that refers to a kind of equivalent. There's nothing relevant measuring "5nm" in a modern chip. 5nm is supposed to mean, the performance is equivalent to a 5nm wide 2-dimentional gate. But, these days, even this has devolved into purely marketing lables.

The GPU shortage has not done more damage. It is more inconvenient for gamers but the overall chip shortage has impacted automotive, Internet, computer sales as a whole, manufacturing of everything that uses silicon chips. The GPU shortage is almost entirely due to somewhat below average production numbers and incredibly high demand. If anything it has done great things for AMD, Nvidia, TSCM and Samsung, they're selling every single chip they can produce with a waiting list that extends out 6 months to a year. They can roll back to Turing and Vega using GDDR5 and fix the GPU supply issue *today.* Nvidia already has pushed the RTX 2060 again and I wouldn't be surprised if AMD bumps Polaris or Vega again.
