In tonight’s top story: U.S. President Joe Biden is trying to turn the page after what many are calling a “disastrous” debate performance. In the first debate of the 2024 presidential race, Biden had hoped to make the case that his opponent Trump was “unfit” to return to the White House. Instead, he reignited questions about his own fitness for a second term in office. Jackson Proskow reports.
Back in Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is dodging questions about the embarrassing loss of a Liberal stronghold to the Conservatives. At least one Liberal backbencher is now saying he’s had enough - penning an open letter to the Liberal caucus calling for Trudeau’s resignation. David Akin looks at who else is calling for Trudeau to stand aside and who is standing by him.
Meanwhile, Iranians headed to the polls Friday in a snap election after the sudden death of the former president Ebrahim Raisi. What makes this election different is that a little-known reformist candidate, who is calling for closer relations with the West, actually has a chance at winning. Think about what you really want - I find that most people have it much too good these days, have NO IDEA about real hardship. I grew up walking to school for 4 very long miles one way, and 4 miles back in open prairie or coyote infested woodland if we took a shortcut; or when lucky a ride behind horses in a wagon or sleigh, in - 30 degree weather. I can still hear my youngest brother crying because his hands were frozen stiff while walking home, he cried harder when we got home and they started to thaw out. I traded my mits for his, as mine were slightly warmer ... we counted ourselves so lucky that finally when I turned 14, the school division provided a bus - we were the first to be picked up and had to stay on it for the full hour run before classes, but were the first to get let off in the afternoon. My older siblings complained to our parents that the younger set were spoiled being able to ride the bus. My parents thought it was wonderful ... we were home much earlier to do the many, many chores on a pioneer farm (my father bought the land for $10 when he was planning to get married) ... Every drop of water that we used in the house had to be brought inside from a surface well (we had to boil water) that was equipped with a pail, rope and pulley ... I hear SO MANY people complaining when THERE REALLY IS NOTHING of real substance to complain about. We only understand what we lost, after we have lost it. So many people who want instant gratification of their wants and wishes ... Canadians, except for the ones who still haven't got clean drinking water, NEVER HAD IT SO GOOD! just my opinion

What is going to happen is Wayne Long is not thinking past his own personal needs, as he fears his connections with Trudeau will sink his own campaign: In Manitoba, Theresa Oswald, started a campaign against her NDP leader, Greg Selenger, an internal party war some years ago because there were rumours going around that the NDP would lose the next election on account he had upped the PST by 1% to help pay for flood relief, as federal funds from the federal Conservatives were not forthcoming, although promised, then rescinded. However, he should have been more vocal about this to his electorate to explain why he was doing this so the blame could be shifted where it belonged. Perhaps there was the same hatred for him at the time as there is for Trudeau now: even my own brother was mouthing off angrily that Selinger was responsible for him not being able to scare up sufficient winter feed for his cows BECAUSE of this flooding that had ruined crops. Feed finally got shipped out from Ontario to help flooded farmers, but late in the season, so that some just went out of business and sold their animals to other provinces before the winter, feeling that the Provincial government didn't care about their livelihood - the animal lobby would put them in jail for cruelty if they had starved their animals, and went looking for jobs instead. Well, the internal party turmoil made headlines and the NDP were turfed out in the next election. I would caution wayne long to think hard about this, where this is headed - he could lose anyway and he has just allowed himself to be branded a Liberal internal public manure spreader, a disloyal party member that is running scared. Theresa Oswald lost her bid for her seat in the next election - inevitable - because she broke party ranks and people don't like public laundry airers (Meghan Markle and her dunce of a sleasy husband still have to learn this and they are middle aged!). Her political career ended up in the out-house ... But she scored a well paying job with the local MMA, so she is doing fine, last I heard. For legal reasons, I have to say "allegedly", but this is just my opinion and not intended to hurt anyone's reputation, just to get people thinking. I'm retired, stay on my tiny patch of garden and grass and don't really have a beef with the Federal government at this time - they drop my pensions into my account regularly and I live within my means, and always have a few dollars left over at the end of the month, but so many, many don't. To those I say: YOU ARE BROKE BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE!!! Smarten up, quit spending on things you can either do for yourself (daily coffee in the am, for one, no wonder Timmy's has such a following, Skip the Dishes, and Friday night pizza except for special occasions) and living high on the hog. You DON'T have to keep up with the Jones's, those people are up to their eyeballs in debt - and for what? "I owe, I owe, so off to work I go ..." How can anyone work full time and be on the edge of bankruptcy constantly is beyond me, so irresponsible ... There is nothing wrong with Joe Biden's brain. He had a full day of commitments as President starting at 7 am and this debate was scheduled for 9 pm, when it was his bedtime. Joe Biden has a physcial disability from the time he was a young child - it is a motor-control issue that causes him to stutter, and try as he might, he has to take it very slow in order for that problem not to be his worst problem. My cousin Dick had the same issue - his marks were always at the top of the class, except for presentation of speeches - he had a massive fail because he would start to stutter, then couldn't get the words out, and the more nervous he got, the worse this issue became. I think Joe Biden inherited a horrible situation directly following a failed businessman President in 2021, who wouldn't even allow him to get ready for his first day in office on January 20 during the "lame duck" period, because Trump refused to concede that he had lost the election, and with the pandemic in full force because of Trump's denial that it even was an issue. As an elderly stateman, Joe has spent most of his life in elected service to the American people; while Trump has spent most of his life pandering for money and pleasuring himself in every way possible, going bankrupt many times as a failed businessman. I have stated many times that because Trump won't get out of the way for younger more robust Republican candidates, the only Democratic candidate that he won't completely annihalate is an octogenarian who has a lifetime of service behind him to democracy and the American people. If the Republicans remove Trump (who definitely has cognitive issues, being constantly tested for these and bragging about them), then that leaves room for both parties to find younger suitable candidates. The only reason why Biden won last time was because of a very staunch anti-trump vote, some voters even said they would vote for a turnip or cabbage before they would allow Trump back in for a second term. If you are a voter, you should care - do your research on the various political parties and make your decision as an informed voter. Your country depends on you being informed when you next go to vote. Trudeau has many failings, as do most of us, and he is more in the public eye as an elected politician than either you or I. But for the country to move forward, we need to do our own due diligence or be negligent as a citizen of Canada. Otherwise, it is the lazy person's way out to just state what you did just because you have a bias one way or another. Case in point - voter apathy - Winnipeg had a municipal election and because the former mayor thought he hadn't been gone for too long to Toronto (5 years), didn't spend a great deal to inform the voting base that he was back and ready to serve us again, he thought just his name would speak for him on voting day. Well, surprise, surprise, a former Pentecostal preacher who was also a city counsellor, put his name in for the running, and since the voters like to complain about taxes but not bother to acquaint themselves with the candidates, he got a whole bunch of his former flocks to help vote him in as mayor. Pays to have been nice to people before ... and now the people are complaining again, especially about the condition of our pothole roads, blaming the mayor, to the point where some have erected petitions on the NextDoor app for new roads, not understanding that there is a whole whack of red tape involved in getting their streets redone ... it costs a lot of money, the worst roads get done first, on the recommendation of Streets and Transportation department and the city has to borrow funds for taxpayers who don't pay the total bill of the new construction, which includes interest covering a 10 to 20 year loan period. Do the people clamboring for new roads understand this - that the city can't just drop everything and come to make them a new road just because this is on their wish list? No, of course not, they honestly believe that their property taxes should cover the costs. Sadly, property taxes only cover the cost of running the city, so they still believe in fairies and Santa Claus ... just my opinion
