In tonight's top story: The commemorations of the 80th anniversary of D-Day will likely go down as one of the most poignant and powerful ever to take place at Juno Beach, as it will likely be the last major milestone aging veterans will be alive for. Crystal Goomansingh looks at how Canada marked one of the most important days in the history of the Second World War.
While the military strategy of D-Day is well known 80 years later, there is far less discussion about why so many young men fought. As Dawna Friesen explains, the 14,000 Canadians who were part of the Normandy landings were all volunteers who chose to go to war.
Calls are only growing for the federal government to identify the MPs accused of "wittingly" assisting efforts of foreign states to meddle in Canadian politics. David Akin explains why the alleged colluders likely would never be charged and why Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc says naming them would be irresponsible.
A water main break has caused Calgary's water levels to plummet to dangerously low levels, so the city is urging residents to conserve water. Heather Yourex-West reports on some of the restrictions and why experts say the water main break serves as a warning to other communities.
Hamas says at least 40 Palestinian civilians, including children, are dead in Deir Al-Balah, Gaza, after an Israeli airstrike hit a school where thousands of people were sheltering and sleeping. Israel says it was targeting a Hamas compound inside the school. Jackson Proskow reports on what Israel is accusing Hamas of and how the attack is hampering efforts to reach a ceasefire.
Plus, 80 years after Canadian troops stormed northern France and freed its villages from the Nazis, expressions of gratitude to Canada are still prominent along the coast near Juno Beach. Dawna Friesen hears from two Normandy residents about their fond memories of liberation and their fears of what could happen if history is forgotten.

As a historian in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, it is impossible to overstate the importance of my job. I'm here to make sure that history is not lost, to make sure that people never forget the stories of the past. It is an HONOUR AND PRIVILEGE to get to hear stories like these veterans in my job, and to be able to pass them on to the next generation. Days like this make me truly thankful to be Canadian

Whoever put the signature bugle piece in the start of this article needs to do their homework. They played taps and American lament. For Canadian and Commonwealth soldiers you play "The Last Post". This is not the first time an Ontario based news program has made this mistake it happens regularly. It is an insult.

No charges 🤦🏻‍♂️ we need serious changes in our system. Not one person has been held accountable for anything that has screwed Canadians and our democracy. All while a government that claims transparency and democracy are all they're about. Just like the RCMP report states; Canadians politeness has a limit and this government is bending the line to its breaking point. This is not what our ancestors fought for, it's the complete opposite

I am a Dane here. Last year I finally got a breakthrough on a clue for fathers uncle. He was born a Dane but emmigrated to either US or Canada, but last autumn I finally have facts that it was Canada.. more precise Calgary. He joined the Canadian Army. I am waiting for answers from the Canadian Military Archive, but we (the family and a historian) believe he was on the beach on D-Day. He survived but returned to Calgary. He died in 1976 and is burried in Calgary on the cemeterys fields of honors. He did not have any reletives.. but how I wish I could learn more about his life. In my seach I found information that he worked on a train factory in Calgary after the war.
