Why is there a minumum weight? Would a 17 pound fixture on top be an issue?

I recently purchase this tripod light stand. I looks and feels sturdy, but the aluminum round pipe that fits into the top of the light stand wont slide into the square top post. Did you have a problem with the extension pipe? Thanks
