Doug is 100% correct .. each country is responsible for monitoring and controlling entry into that country, why would Canada take responsibility for who enters into the US ?? We could and should tighten our standards of entry into Canada, but controlling who leaves is just silly !!!

Canada currently has poor to abysmal relations with pretty much every major economic power outside the US dominated G7: India, China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Turkey. @ you don’t get the context? Comfortable exchange rate of USD to CAD is $0.75. Today, BoC’s 50bps rate cut, it hit $0.705. They are already buying our goods much cheaper now. 25% tariffs could stop US to buy our goods and soon or later, desperate Canadian companies will dump the goods for pennies just to survive. Plus you do know Canada don’t have refineries so we have to send our petroleum to US and reimport it back. That means when 25% tariffs are implemented, we also are impacted on that 25% tariffs and gas will be so much higher because of low CAD+25% tariffs. In reality we will be the ones who will suffer not US.

You're also going to help his popularity throughout his Presidency. Because people like you are going to show the US that they really do need to be self sufficient and should not rely on Canada or any other country. And we'll suffer for it, in a very big way. Yep, asking us to stop letting Fentanyl flow across the border is so evil! If Ford does this, by the way, it will prove Trumps point and bring him more support. You people are so dim, it's actually impressive at this point. Years and years of this, and you still can't wrap your head around it. What Trump is asking us to do is extremely reasonable, and him asking us to do that has our politicians talking about breaking hundred year treaties, proving that we cannot be relied upon. And don't dismiss what we're importing into their country. There's a reason you're hearing about "super labs" in BC and other provinces. Our loose immigration system pours into the US-- and sure, that goes both ways, which is why we need to do a better job with our border, to stop illegal activity entering our country, and leaving it. Him asking us to do that is reasonable. Very reasonable. The fact that he needs to issue threats in order to get us to do it is shameful. The fact that we have the greatest protection on the planet, and in human history, along our border, and we can't even put our 2% into NATO is shameful. Thank you for continuing to be ignorant. It helped Trump get re-elected. You're very much blind to it, but yeah. Normal people aren't drinking your kool-aid anymore.

They play on the fools out there who just eat up the fear based narratives and parrot them back. It's very effective, and how he's built a following... because it's simple. It's easy. It has no nuance. It's about fearing "the other", and fearing imminent danger (that never really comes in the form they say it will) to take more control in the name of safety, security, and dominance over not freedom for. Canada stands as a beacon of greatness on this planet, blessed with vast lands, abundant natural resources, and an unparalleled spirit of generosity and resilience. This is why we, as Canadians, have no reason to be shaken by Donald Trump's short-sighted tariff hike threats. The deep and enduring bonds between Canadians and Americans-rooted in friendship, shared values, and mutual respect-will withstand any temporary disruptions caused by political decisions. Donald Trump may fail to grasp the profound, untapped potential of Canada’s natural wealth, which holds the power to benefit all of North America, especially as we face the pressing challenges of climate change. His actions, including these tariffs and his unwarranted trolling of our esteemed Prime Minister, reveal a lack of foresight that risks isolating him and his administration from the global community. Canada, however, remains steadfast and forward-looking. We are a nation that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and optimism, qualities that will propel us to greater heights. Let us take pride in our ability to turn challenges into opportunities, demonstrating to the world what it means to lead with integrity, wisdom, and an unshakable belief in the power of unity and progress.

The reason is, in the trade between the two countries right now, US is already getting too much advantage as it's just buying the most important and valuable products from Canada. Most of them are crude and essential in hightech productions. On the contrary to pretend to have some trade with US, we have to cut down our own productions that are plenty and used to be thrive in Canada.

His boot is gonna be caked in the mud he's stepping in by all the economically atrocious plans he's got. If he was starting a trade war with Canada only, it might be that you'd be right, but he's going to put tariffs on the two biggest trade partner the US has (Canada and Mexico) and China as well who is a significant trade partner also. On top of that he's going to deport a massive amount of people, digging holes into the US workforce. He can retaliate all he wants but people all over the U.S. will hate him after a few months of that. On top of that, he's going to generate so much ill will in my country of Canada and Mexico towards the U.S. that these tariffs will create damages between our relationship that will not heal for decades. His planned tariffs are going to break the trade agreement HE negotiated between our 3 countries. No one will ever trust the U.S. to keep their trade agreements ever again.

Instead telegraphing via the media what Canada plans to do, we should formulate a plan but keep it under wraps until a date is set by the USA to implement tariffs. Then we should implement our plans to counter. Ignore Trump until we are ready to counter punch. Stop giving him what he wants, publicly.

Publicly stating what you'd do is a form of open negotiation, and a tactic used by a lot of politicians and negotiators. It allows other more level-headed people on the other side hear what the consequences could surely be, and seek cooler heads influence to shape what may come. The public statements are as much for us as Canadians to know that our politicians are not going to just shrink, but it's also to let officials there know we're not going to just take it and it will be challenging for everyone. It's a good move to get your adversary to think twice about their approach and see if talking can then resume in the middle to hash something out.

It is the US that is responsible for what and who enters the US. Why would Canada or Mexico do the US's customs job for them? Treat people like they treat you, they disrespect you, stop helping them. Mexico has been trying to prevent illegals from the border which really isn't their responsibility. Screw Trump. Hire more customs agents and do it yourself.

You really think this is about 65 people crossing illegally every day when they have 5000 per day on the Mexican border? Or 43 lbs of fentanyl in one year when on the southern border it's measured in tons? How many millions are you willing to spend on a miniscule problem when it is clearly a misdirection. Trump has a domestic problem, he's looking for tariffs to solve. He wants to cut taxes for the rich without blowing a whole in their deficit or cutting the military budget. He thinks by returning to a failed tax policy he can achieve that, because until income taxes were installed the US government ran on tariffs only. He also knows this isn't feasible, so he want to cut US entitlements to cover the short fall. This has nothing to do with trade imbalances or 65 people a day. This is about him and other billionaires not wanting to pay taxes. That and he doesn't like Canada, it's not just Trudeau. He just doesn't like any of us. He does little to no business in Canada, outside of branding, probably because he can't cheat as easily.

This guy lacks a backbone just like most Canadian politicians. Just the way he attacked Mexico he should use that same energy and stand up to the US. Watching paint dry is far more entertaining then watching Dougie give a press brief.
