The looming trade war between Canada and the U.S. has been temporarily averted at the 11th hour after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed on a border security plan that Canada will implement. David Akin explains how Trudeau and Trump got on the same page, how Canada plans to secure its border to Trump's satisfaction and whether it will make a difference in this uncertain situation.
And, Canada's automotive industry contributes around $18 billion to the country's GDP, but that could be drastically reduced if Trump follows through on his tariff threat. Shallima Maharaj speaks with the owner of a vehicle component manufacturing company about how his livelihood is on the line.
Plus, many Canadians are protesting the proposed tariffs by changing their shopping lists and travel plans to avoid American goods and destinations. Heather Yourex-West looks at how effective the “Buy Canadian” pledge could be.

@@fearless6868 you might want to start considering how the developers and the online community made KZbin and all social media platforms the way they are today. I’m not taking credit away from the developers, they had a great idea and put it to practice, the community liked it enough to support and provide feedback, and the developers were conscientious enough to take those feedbacks to improve on the platform. As for IPhones, designed in California, but made in China. It’s cooperation that got us as far as we have today. The modern society can’t function when people try to do it all on their own, everything is so interwoven into our societies that when a thread breaks the whole fabric begins to unravel as we have witnessed with the effects of Covid, nobody wins. That is the direction America is heading in with your current leader.

"Buying Canadian" is certainly necessary, but we have to be pragmatic: we can't "Buy Canadian" our way out of this. We should really also look into diversifying our trade partners - Mexico, Brazil and the rest of Latin America, for a start. I think we're already in with the EU about as tight as we possibly can be...although it would be great to supplant the US as the provider of gas and oil there to replace Russia's.

What trust? Trade wars between the US and Canada are as old as the nations themselves. Trump here mentioned that we're protectionist about farming - which is extremely true (look into beef, dairy and poultry to see why we pay 3 times more than Americans). On the other hand, US farmers are heavily subsidized (ours are just given a monopoly in certain areas).

Trump might delay the tariffs on Mexico and Canada this time around, but his mental instability, frequent change of mind, plus his volatile diplomacy, suggest that Trump could impose these same tariffs at anytime during the next four years. Canada should promote more inter-provincial trade as well as finding other countries who need our resources. An export tax on all resources including oil could, over time generate sufficient funds for Canada to build cross country pipelines and a refinery on each coast.

This was all trump's plan. It's the art of the deal. Seem unreasonable and ask for something ludicrous (like canada joining the u.s.), use your leverage (tariffs), and then settle for something far lower (an immediate secure border, and soon to be an even better trade deal for the U.S.) making your opponent walk away feeling like the victor.

I think some conservatives out there still have their heads together but his cult following will ride with him into oblivion if he decides to. Aside from all that, canada needs to make an election happen asap so we can get Poilievre in power and start to make this country more powerful and wise again. The liberals have failed us for much too long now. There is no strings they can pull in the final hour and people are done with them. Time to just make it happen and let Poilievre have a crack at making things better for Canadians. He will surely get along with trump better than trudeau so that alone will be beneficial to our country. Trump takes things personal and he doesnt like trudeau at all... so the quicker we can remove him the better for our own sake.

@@gphunkera8731 The faster we can get Poilievre in power the better our odds will be dealing with trump. Trump hates trudeau and the liberals and he will attack canada on the basis of his personal feelings because thats just how trump is. He is a rich NY bully. The things poilievre wants are good for our country and may help appease trump enough to back off. He also wants to make canada far more powerful by unleashing our resource and trade potential, which the liberals have kept tied up for years. People need to get over party politics and vote in their best interest and right now its Poilievre without question. Going up against America is not wise unless its an absolute necessity. Poilievre will have a way better chance of keeping us in a good position or even maybe gaining power on the world stage. @@andysenadbajric I think its because the Americans have a Border Czar, so to appease them, we now a Fentanyl Czar. I don't like that title because Russia is not our ally. But if you go by what Trump says, and the Gabbard lady says, they are allies of the USA.

giving people a calculation, average soldier in America get pay 15 per hour, lets say 3 circulate, which mean 3333 at one time, 3333*24*15*365= 437M, for both side almost a billion dollars we save a year, and this will be a long term plan, which can save a lot of money. Or lets say 2500 at one time and 4 circulate, 2500*24*15*365=328.5M for both side is 650m a year, it cost 91k peso for a soldier to stand on border for a month, now do you all know why he wants the soldier from Mexico and Canada
