Islamabad residents woke up on Wednesday morning to empty streets littered with smashed up vehicles, after Pakistan’s security forces arrested hundreds of supporters of the jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan - and effectively put an end citywide protests - according to local media.
“There was a stampede during the (midnight) operation and a few people (protestors) managed to escape, leaving behind their vehicles and belongings," said Islamabad resident Waseem Malik.
Other locals expressed their relief as road sweepers worked to clean up broken glass and debris on the street in the morning.
“The situation this morning shows that the roads are completely cleared, and people are now moving freely. (Local) residents appear to be satisfied, and it seems that the sit-in protest has been cancelled, as many protesters have returned to the city or their homes," said another.
