There seems to be some way to not attack automatically when using a Z counter. I'm guess it's either holding back on the control stick or maybe guard or X. But I'm theorizing that sometimes not countering right away prevent the CPU (and other players) from Z countering your counter and will let you start a combo up again. Maybe you can fire off a Ki blast from your Z counter as well, just things to throw off the timing.

It's too bad nobody has managed to scope out any of the what-if stuff aside from the initial Raditz fight and a scene in Trunks's story yet, if that stuff is available for these early access versions people are getting. I really wonder what sort of deviations they got in store; looking at the story menu at the end you can see that Goku Black's appears to have two of them, one at his final canonical fight, and one at an earlier one, the one before Goku and Zamasu fuse. Interestingly, the latter seems to lead completely off the landmass, which makes me think that it's one of the more involved or off-the-wall what-if situations, because I believe Goku's first stage has something similar. Not to mention every one of those fight stages with a picture shows a little branching symbol, which implies they all have at least some sort of minor deviation to be viewed... Man, I can't wait to see the Story Mode in full...

He got 3 hours of playtime and we haven't seen anything from Past Saiyan Saga Goku, much of Freezas story, none of Gohan, Picollo or Jirens, large portion of the cast unplayed. We don't know whats unloackable in story and what's just a shop thing. We don't know what most of the custom battles and what if routes are.
