Thanks, you inspired me to make my own dumbbells. Pro Tip: Instead of cutting the bucket when you demold. Add some baby oil in the buckets before pouring the concrete in. Then lightly tap around the bucket when it comes time to demold, it will slide off so you can use it again. This will greatly reduce your cost basis.
@GlobMarble
@GlobMarble 4 жыл бұрын
Hey!! The reason I didn't use a release agent on the buckets was that I didn't want the dumbbells to be smooth. This is why I mixed the concrete in the original container. Closer to the end you can see a few closeups, and the sides look scratched up and more rugged which I think is a much cooler look than a smooth cast of a brand new bucket. Those same scratches and ridges make it extremely difficult if not impossible to demold without destroying the container.

An old bro of mine works for a concrete and masonry company and he made his own dumbbells out of concrete, too, but they were all odd weights when he cast them. Each set weighs the same i.e. a 6.1 lbs set, a 13.7 lbs set, a 19.4 lbs set, etc, but, instead of marking the weird weights by their actual weights, he just labeled them #1, #2, #3, #4, etc, etc, in order of lightest to heaviest.

If you dont cut the bucket all the way off, just cut the excess, you essentually have a rubber coated dumbell. You can also get some rubber paint for the outside if you dont like the bucket look. Also, I would reccoment hockey tape over electrical tape. E tape will slide over time and youll get a greasy residue. Hockey tape is meant to be handled often and feels better on the hands.

you did a perfect job, I used schedule 80 PVC because its stronger and I used screws but doesn't really matter. Liquid plastic will get expensive. My first set looks like shit but I'm improving. Im gonna try to make fixed small barbells with rotors.

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm-neither hot nor cold-I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. (Revelation 3:15-18) you cannot live for this world and not try to stop sinning (being cold) and only believing in God(hot) without turning from sin or sinning and saying God will forgive you after or not read the Bible, pray, worship/obeying God. Which is being a lukewarm. If we are neither cold or hot, God will spit us out his mouth. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. ” Proverbs 16:5 “The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before before a fall. Genesis 1:26-27 - “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. Jesus is coming back soon!! Repent and believe!! Jesus loves you and wants a relationship with you 🫶🏽 Plis read revelation 3:15-18 on google if you don’t have a Bible. (Exodus 20:7) You shall not invoke the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. Please don’t use Gods name in vain, it’s dangerous Has a nation ever changed its gods? (Yet they are not gods at all.) But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols. Jeremiah 2:11) having idols of any kind isn’t good 🙅‍♀️ Shall a man make gods unto himself, and they are no gods? Therefore, behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know mine hand and my might; and they shall know that my name is The LORD. (Jeremiah 16:20) HAVING IDOLS IS A SIN JEREMIAH 16:20 , JEREMIAH 2:11 Revelation 3:15-18 explains that we can’t be cold and hot at the same time which is being a lukewarm. In other words, if we are hot, which is really repenting and turning from sin) if we are cold we just completely don’t really follow God. If we mix those together it makes a lukewarm which they will be spat out Gods mouth and won’t inherit the kingdom of heaven. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.John 3:16. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. John 15:13 Romans 8:38-39 .. John 3:16 .. Revelation 3:15-18 Corinthians 6:9.. John 15:13 Psalms 23:4 Psalms 23:4 || Yea, though I walk through The Valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; rod and thy staff they comfort me. Deuteronomy 31:8. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. So Boss thanks for the video Its great. As I was watching it at the point that you cut the buckets of the concrete I was anticipating what you said later on about not throwing them around as they will break up. As a person who works with up cycled HDPE plastic a lot I was thinking that you might try to de mold them with out cutting the buckets, then after letting them cure and get all the moisture out you could Remove the upper rim of the bucket and put the buckets back on them and then using a hair drier you can soften the plastic and form it over and around the concrete to enclose them and extend their shelf life a bit. Thanks again for the video, stay safe

I just used plastic bags and then an extremely large amount of duct tape to pretty good effect. My weights were made of 'Portland cement' (plaster of Paris plus sand) which is weaker than normal cement but I don't baby them and they haven't broken yet after a year or so, the thick duct tape layer seems to work pretty well for protecting them. Ugly but functional :)

@@bodiddley7404 look for liquid plasti-dip instead of flex seal. plasti-dip is usually sold in spray cans, but the liquid form might work better for this. typically people use the liquid kind to dip tool handles to add a rubber like grip to them, but I dont see why it wouldnt work on these weights if you completely encased the concrete in it.

very good Idea mate nice work I think I would have. Little things I would have done differently one keep it in the plastic bucket over time dropping the weights will chip away the concrete, two I would have filled in the pipe with concrete as well for a little extra strength in the pipe, three if you put your pipe in the dry concrete mix and to measure at the start you wound not need to waste it.
@GlobMarble
@GlobMarble 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Keeping them in the bucket would definitely add strength, but they wouldn't look nearly as cool. Also, concrete in the tube would not add any strength. concrete is strong under compression like under a hydraulic press, but extremely weak when it comes to bending, which is why people use rebar to keep it from cracking. Also the concrete sits much lower in the bucket when its mixed with water then when it is dry. The best way to not waste any concrete is to work quickly. Have the nails precut before adding water to your mix. That's what I did with the rest of the buckets.

Hi great vid, thanks ! Just a quick question : How much did the finished unit weigh when it dried and how much water did you add in total for each unit ? For reference the min. water to cement ratio is 0.23:1 just for hydration ( the chemical reaction of hardening ), and 0.35:1 for a more workable mix. This doesn't include the aggregates like sand and stones. You can add up to 0.5 but after that the concrete strength will be affected so they might break more easily. You can mix only the water and cement together first, to make sure you get the water and cement mixing properly so that it will harden right, and then mix the aggregates in later. It will be a pretty stiff mix though. Thanks for the vid

Just done this and turned out to be great, but i feel a bit insecure about the pvc so i use metal pipe instead of plastic and to solve the slippery metal pipe when wet, i just use some leftover cloth wrapped around.

I might do this for my cheap home gym, I had seen on instructables that one guy had used galvanized steel with T fitting at the end for the concrete to sink into

Shaky-handed & off-centre as I tend to be, I'll use two scrap strips of wood to line up the PVC pipe. Trust me, I'll need it, or the weights will be painful to use! - Also saw @Josh Bar's comment from 2020 about using demolding solutions so you don't have to cut away the bucket each time. He said it saves on costs. - I also realise it saves a lot on plastic waste, which is Huge in the world, so anything you can do to reduce That, fantastic!

Great!! if you like to drop weights after using them, you can give it a good double coating of flex seal to make these indestructible :)

I recently made dumbbells using leftover lead and cast iron plumbing pipe for the handle. Due to the density of the metal, they appear much smaller than the dumbbells everyone is used to seeing. To recover my pride I made a couple from cast aluminum, these are just too big! If I pretend to strain I look like the hulk.

Paint them with Rhino Liner and then even if they crack it’ll stay together and usable.

Shouldve used a pipe as mold for the handle and made the whole dumbell concrete. Could’ve reduced the overall size of these things by a decent amount. Maybe even make thicker handles (to an extent) as the weight goes up

The bucket will not demold because of the scratches inside of it. If you would like to demold the buckets and not waste them, mix the concrete in a separate bucket and pour into a new one. I don't think they would look as cool without the scratches though :/

Alternatively , you could have cut-split the pipe ends and stuck a rock inside to form a V at each end . That pipe is going no where with concrete gripping on the V ends. Cheaper and faster , right ?

I didn't like that the first 10 lbs of concrete was wasted, I don't think it had to be. Just weigh it, and use a longer piece of pvc. Then, measure afterwards to get the handle the right size. Also, I think the buckets could've been reused. The less waste, the better. The electric tape on the handle was a good idea.
@GlobMarble
@GlobMarble 3 жыл бұрын
I added a note saying that if you work quickly you wouldn't need to waste anything. Concrete takes a while to set to the point of it not being workable anymore

Water does not evaporate out of concrete. It becomes chemically incorporated.

Most of the water evaporates. This is why you must wait a month before sealing a freshly poured concrete slab

Would your superplasticizer make concrete weight plates nearly indestructible in a gym setting?
@GlobMarble

It would definitely make them way stronger but I wouldn't recommend tossing them around like you would with steel dumbbells. You could once you cover them with bed liner though :)

Would Fiber reinforcement make a big difference?
@GlobMarble
@GlobMarble 3 жыл бұрын
It would help a lot with the entire strength meaning it wont just crack in half once you drop it, but the fibers wont stop the concrete from chipping on the sides. If youre interested we sell fibers here- globmarble.com/index.php?route=product/search&search=fibers

Maybe could use fiberglass Bondo instead, very strong and durable. It's a bit light though(and more expensive), one gallon weighs 10lbs, but u could probably put some metal inside of it, to add weight.

You could have put oil on the sides of the mold and mixed the concrete in another tub and pour the mixture into the oiled mold and then done it you wouldn't have to waste those molds as the oil will help the concrete to separate after getting strong and hard
