For people that don't understand Filipino: Sirena is a Filipino counterpart of mermaid. There's a saying that you can "normalize" a man that identifies as a woman by dunking their head in a drum full of water for a period of time and asking them afterward what their gender is. The father here does exactly that, to which his son replies, "Babae po" (formal speech for "I am a woman"). And the father adds: "You have no shame! I have no child that is gay!" One of Gloc-9's early rap lines take the point of view of the main character and says: "Until I became a young man -- wait, that's wrong, I meant woman. But why are so many still confused, what is your problem with me? Is it because my actions are not according to what you think should be seen?" and later "Please stop it, Father, I won't be stubborn anymore and will no longer wear mom's old dress." The most powerful lines said are when Gloc-9 mentions how all the other siblings left the dad alone and all live far away, and is angry not because of the cancer he has but because his caretaker (his gay son) is wearing a dress. And at the father's dying breath, he tells his son "Son, I hope you can forgive me for all that I have done. You can't measure courage by the beard on someone's face because sometimes a gay man is more manly than a straight man." -- Also hoping Universal Records can add translations or allow the community to translate! Some people here may tolerate them, but that does not equal true safety and acceptance. I am not gay but this video reminded me of the bad parts of my childhood when my father used to hit me whenever he came home drunk. Because of that, I don't like interacting with him anymore, even now that I am already an adult. Everytime I see him, I get so agitated or angry and lock myself inside my room. Before, I was just listening to it like nothing special, but after watching Gloc 9's recent interview on Abs-CBN, I started to watch this (Sirena) again, and I couldn't stop my tears from falling from my eyes.
