I hear you, man. There is more than meets they eye with the Glock knife 78. The Austrians make some incredibly good stuff, their geniuses and nice people! I am in Australia. When I was a kid in 1986 I first heard of this knife. BUT we never knew what it was called, much less where to get it. But at a educated guess it would have hit surplus stores in 1987, as I heard of a guy who got one from the U.S. then - rare in those days. In the 80's people got buy on word of mouth and they didn't lie. I brought 4 of these 78's before they disappeared (discontinued 3 years ago). I could go on forever and each to their own. But, this is the BEST tactical (70%), survival (30%) knife I have come accross since I started collecting in 1975. Its the lightest, strongest knife there is. It even rivalled the Fallkniven A1 in torsional regidity testing and it won! It has the strongest tip of any knife I've seen. It proved most of the knives we buy are junk and over priced. If I was going to war THIS is the knife I would take, every day! I keep it handy when in the desert camping as protection from our numerous and notorious wildlife here - we have increased numbers of cross-bred and dangerous wild dogs and Kangaroos to contend with. Sure the Bussee Battle Mistress and Scrapyard Scrapper were stronger, but who would carry them?? The Glock 78 knife has perfect balance, can be thrown and the tip is centred making it suitable for bow drilling in a survival situation. The drop point blade could even skin and dress game. Its quite simply the perfect knife and this took me the bets part of 50 years to say! Add to this the knife is legal in many countries. I wager it is going to out-do the Gerber MkII in the collection stakes. Dealers are already asking $150 for used 78's here in Australia, and I ahve only seen ONE genuine OLD one for sale. 4 times what they sold for! Only a regretful fool will sell this knife, imo of course😎👌

The Glock knife comes from the factory with a plastic plug on the pommel covering a spase that may contain a fire-starter or other small items. It may be possible to remove the plastic cap to drill and tap the metal tube lining the hole and replace it with a stainless steel bolt. It would then be easy to remove the bolt to access the space in the grip and use the pommel as a hammer. If possible, I would also put an O-ring around the bolt to waterproof the space. It seems like an interesting project to try.

1095 "IS" a spring steel (look it up). From what I've read on a few metal and bladesmith forums Glock knives are MADE with 1095 but Glock just refers to it as generic "spring steel". Most decent carbon steel knives are typically 1095. It's a really good knife steel. It just tends to rust easy if it doesn't have a finish coating on it (or if you just don't take care of a plain blade).

I agree. You cannt beat Glock 78's design, its literally prefect. Some people try and criticise the round handle. While they have a point where hunting and bushcraft ergonomics are concerned (see Virtuvoice NL5 Idun and Fallkniven F1 comparison videos), this does not apply to the Glock's primary tactical application. Round handle has been used for combat knives since WWII for a reason. Not to get into too grusome, but when the blade goes in it hits the skelton inside the body. WWI taught us this caused jarring and violent twisiting of the wrist. A round handle minimises this, so it was brought back from medi-evil times. The knife just spins in the hand!

For a bayonet it's really handy. Wouldn't call it a good general purpose knife though. The blade is really thick but not wide so the primary bevel is at a dull angle, with the cutting edge being at an even duller angle. This creates a relly resilient edge but carving wood becomes a problem, many people regrind it for that reason. The knife is as tough as f-ing nails, both the blade and the handle and you can use it as a thrower without a problem. Plastics have come a LONG way and it does take batoning without any issues. Edge retention isn't as good but that's no wonder with a bayonet, doesn't keep cutting as long but you can't use a Mora to pry open a window or to punch a brick out of a wall to use the hole as firing position. This knife is a must have for knife guys.

Use it as a knife if will serve you well. As for the rest of the crap they do, there are enough fraggles out there who do that to a knife for you to watch. Bayonets are fighting knives. They are used for stabbing, but you don't need razor edge on a knife to cut. A blunt knife will hurt. This glock is a good tool.
@OnTheRiver664 жыл бұрын
Excellent video with great information! I’m glad you found the link to the torture tests. They show how superior the Glock is compared to a lot of other name brand knives in toughness. The sheath is an ingenious design as the knife is securely on your belt in the sheath but will never fall out accidentally or allow the blade to pierce the sheath and hurt you, like when falling. Like Mora sheaths the sheath has no fiberglass to dull the edge when the blade is inserted and withdrawn (a large number of name brand knives have sheaths containing fiberglass that dulls the edge (and I have several). Also a higher Rockwell C hardness does not mean the edge lasts longer. Dulling of a knife edge is related to microscopic and submicroscopic (colloidal size) bits of minerals like silica that are harder than any steel and which occur naturally in wood, paper made from wood fiber, and leather. Also sand and dirt is harder than any hardened steel. Oxidation of the edge is also a factor in edge retention in that a slight corrosion of the microscopic edge from moisture and animal fluids will quickly dull the knife. A great survival knife must be tough and durable and a little greater hardness will not improve that but a lot of people don’t know this. Great video covering all aspects of the Glock knife - the best I’ve seen - I have to hit subscribe!

Thanks for the review! I've been eyeballing that glock knife a sometime now. I have honestly thought that was some cheap chinese copy-knife, because it wat so cheap :) I think that full tang stuff is overemphasized. If you think it physics-wise the most strength in the knife (in normal use) comes from the inch or two from the start of the blade, just like mora has demonstrated. You can see it easily yourself: Take a thin, knife length, wood stick and press it like a knife against something. It is not gonna break at where the pinky finger is but somewhere between blade and a middle finger. Thats where the most forces comes to play. The full tang just adds weight to the knife (in normal use). Tang also holds the handle in place but if you make it right it is not gonna be a problem. Mora also makes longer knives like 749 and some 7?? others that would suit better for the more gruesome purposes. I have that 749. One combat knife i've been testing and liking lately is the terävä jääkäripuukko 140. It is also "cheap" if you dont buy the sheath. It is differentialy heat treated to have a hard middle for a good edge retention but softer outsides to give it more strength.
@TheModernSurvivalist5 жыл бұрын
It is true that full tang knives are tough, and that narrow tang with a weak material around it (thing kabar with leather washers stacked) can bend or even break. But in this case with Glocks ploymer around it the blade will break before the handle or the tang does. Super strong yet so light. nice combination.
@hauki92865 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernSurvivalist Good point. The polymers add to the strength of the glock knife. Kabar would be a much stronger if it has some taper to it, inch or two at the start of the tang. I quess that was what i wanted to say with my long friday-evening ramblings :)

Perfect is a reach for either product. Acceptable is a better term. The blade shape is good if you’re close. Not ideal for slashing as it doesn’t have much belly so it is a “meh” slasher. I have a Kukri, which is an amazing chopper. You can stab with it, but it produces horrible wounds chopping. If you weren’t close in hand to hand you might take a terrible wound closing. That might be it as one of those wounds might compromise your ability to fight. I prefer full tang knives. Less likely to break under hard use. I have the model 78. It’s really good for the money (low $30 range US). Good knife overall. Very stabby. For bush crafting, I like the Esse’s better and you’re paying more for a blade shape that’s less about fighting, more utility. For a fighting knife, I prefer a Bowie or a tanto shape. The tanto is the better stabber, a Bowie is one of the best all around, stabs well, hacks better. Glock’s marketing is amazing. Now I have a Gen2 G19. It has been shooting since June 1989. It is a classic. It was also lighter, cheaper and more effective than anybody else at the time. The Sig P226 and Beretta 92 FS were their competition and the Glock was about as effective (the 92 FS which I also own) is more accurate and smoother but much bigger and heavier. As a result, I’ll leave the house with the Glock on me. Perfect it is not. They have LOTS of more viable competition now. Few who own a PDP or a VP9 are giving these guns up for a Glock. I have a PDP Compact and a full sized VP9. Both are better options than a Glock 19. Better triggers by far, as reliable, feel better in hand, point better and are easier to learn to shoot well for newbs on the average. The Glock was more original, yes. Do I respect Glocks, sure. But hardly anybody keeps the stock crappy sights. They replace them by default. The Glock frame famously flexes a lot affecting accuracy. They’ve really changed nothing major in 30 years. In fact I like that mine has the tenifer finish they don’t use anymore. Much more durable than the nitride finish. If I put my Gen2 in your hand then a Gen5, you’ll say they are pretty much the same. Is that a bad thing? No, but the point is Glock has sat on its laurels and not really innovated for a long time. Gaston, please lose the crap stock sights and do forward slide serrations. I honestly think some of the new Taurus polymer guns have more features and they shoot great at 2/3 the price. Good on Taurus. No doubt. They have really established their brand. Overall great review. I agree that Glock products are good and a solid value, but perfect? They would not have thriving cottage industries on upgrading their pistols were that they case. What do you change out on a VP9? Nothing or rarely anything. I’m not trading my VP9 for ANY Glock, not even a Taran.
@Ve-suvius Жыл бұрын
Glock clipped point is the better stabber than the Tanto shaped point. By far actually. Read up 101 knife design's by Murray Carter on this. The square tip of the tanto point causes drag, thus being less efficient at stabbing.

You have to look at the concept and application of the Glock knife, then the Bowie knife. Glock 78 is made to be carried. All day. By a soldier. Your Bowie is not. Secondly, you say the Bowie can slash the glock cannot, but if you study Fairbarin and Skyes WWI training and knife fighting today you will see nutralising a threat is met by stabbing, not slashing as is stabbing as a tactic (they dont see it coming as you can disguise it using tactics). And I'm sorry, I firmly believe the Glock 78 is a perfect soldiers knife.

Glocks are pretty light too. And you have a longer blade you can batton with if needed. Mora secures in the sheath better, much better fighting knife if it cones to that. Mora are fine knives too though. Will do most of what you need for just a few bucks and zero weight. Stevan Your comment is interesting and at the same time baffling to me, because I had the opposite experience during my initial active duty US Army service (Airborne) in the early to mid 1990's. My unit was ordered to have a new Airborne-standard (hard sheath) acceptable knife on our load bearing equipment or on our person.for all in-the-field and deployment purposes. This was a significant change to the existing US Army Airborne doctrine. We already had the issue M-9 bayonets but because of our unit standards regarding equipment retention, they were impossible to put into use quickly, therefore rendering them useless in a hurry,. (They were sheathed and corded down to our LBE for retention.) Thus, we were ordered to have an alternative, one that was more applicable in sudden need. Interestingly enough, our First Sergeant (name withheld) at the time was peeved with me during the post-order unit inspection to ensure compliance of the new standard. I was aghast as he berated me for my choice of knife (The Glock knife) and it's lack of "positive retention" on my LBE. He demanded to know why I didn't have it corded down. I was too young (and shocked at his apparent ignorance) to posit a credible answer even as I knew full well the utter fallacy of such thinking. I mean, wasn't that kinda the point of the whole f-ing thing?! I had specifically CHOSEN the Glcck knife and sheath BECAUSE of it's excellent design, sheath retention, and ease of draw! But I am proud to this day that i gave hima a respectful argument. I did not win him over but suffered no punitive action either. For anyone on the fence about a Glock knife, do not hesitate They are beyond excellent for the price. If you are Active Duty, make sure your command and their higher NCO's/petty officer's won't take issue with you over this. DO NOT risk an Article 15, or a compulsory visit with the Captain of the boat/ship over something like this. It's not worth it. -Palmetto

@@palmettolpop4148 All we got was the SAK model soldier. So during basic training I asked the sergeant how to get firewood because it's a folder and not good for batoning. It's The Netherlands and basic training was in winter so everything was wet. He told me to just baton with it and if it breaks replace for a new one. Of course that's bs when you are in the field. I also did not argue. They often have a fixed mindset. In your case it showed by him asking why you did not have it corded down. But all outdoor training from that point I did hide the Glock underneath my uniform. It was 1985 and we did not have camo clothing back than. Just olive drab as was my Glock. Easy to hide. I was drafted but as an officer and I'm retired 1st luitenant now. Been a survival instructor since (1986). I have used many knives and also test them. But I still use the Glock model 78 (sometimes) and the SAK model soldier (all the time as last resort knife in a 3 knives set-up). I don't know the US prices but I think it would add up to 50 dollar maybe and you have a package that will last a lifetime. I do like the fact that you guys even did get a fixed blade issued. At one point I know the Special Forces did get one fixed blade (Dutch made) for every group of 4. I don't know if that is still happening now. I do know that our military has bad equipment and basically buy everything themselves.
@palmettolpop41485 жыл бұрын
@@StevanOutdoor Thank you sir for your detailed and very interesting response! In my Basic training experience, we were absolutely forbidden to light a fire of any kind, because that was very "un-tactical". I worked with some troops from Norway in Bosnia years ago. The few assigned to Eagle Base in northern Bosnia had a nice 6-wheel armored personnel carrier. I caught a ride with them one day across the base. I noticed the rifles specially fixed via mechanical device of some kind to the interior walls of the vehicle and asked the young NCO next to me how it worked. She looked at the rifle in the mechanical lock system like it was something she had never considered. She laughed and said, "I really don't know." I was shocked. I know Norway has some excellent special operations units. I hope the rest of your country's military has improved since your active time. We have not been perfect here in the United States either. Even into the late 1990's, US Marine Corps Reserve units were typically issued ONE compass per platoon (approx 35 men). I was Army but have worked with many good Marines. Things are better now. Much better for them. Cheers from the States my friend!
@StevanOutdoor5 жыл бұрын
@@palmettolpop4148 A lot has changed. Back in my days we had military draft. In my platoon I had guys that had finished university. Also guys straight from high school that wanted a career in the military. It was very diverse. A challenge to work with but I think the average IQ was way up back than. The equipment has always been crap or outdated. The canteen cup and mess tins are the only things I use today and my SAK. Of course we were not allowed a fire during basic training. Basic training is 6 weeks here. Officer training in total is 6 months. That was when drafted. It's all professionals now because we postponed the military draft. Your experience in Bosnia with the Norwegians is a bit weird. Norwegians being in Bosnia does suggest they are professional military and they should know all about the guns and mounting systems. In general the countries of North Europe have pretty good special forces. I know the Dutch special forces are everywhere on the planet but specialize in intelligence. They keep a low profile even on social media. I don't know any of them who even has a profile picture on fb. It's also different for the USA. You have more budget for the military but most of all you have civilians with guns. Nobody gonna invade the USA. ;)

For a survival knife, you've given high marks to the Schrade Extreme Survival SCHF9. Given this most recent video, do you now favor the Glock survival knife over the Schrade? Similarly, would you replace the Victorinox Hiker, Hultafors or Kershaw Lifter (all of which you've done videos on) with the Glock 78/81 for your EDC choice? Thanks and keep up the good work.
@TheModernSurvivalist5 жыл бұрын
The SCHF9 is a great knife. It has some design quicks but overall a very good survival knive for the money. For wilderness survival it has the extra chopping power. But is also a heavier knife, the tip is VERY fat, the handle is not all that great. The Glock is a super lean knife, in every sense. Its no chopper (but the 81 has a saw, so thats that) it can baton as wel as any knife, maybe better than the SCHF9 becuase of the lean long blade. Both are excellent knives, but I would favor the Glock knife, especially if we throw into the mix that for real world survival, chances of needing to defend yourself for other people are considerably higher for most of us than having to survive life or death situations in the wild. This is getting a bit long, maybe I'll explain better with a video later today. ;-)

I doubt they go about throwing their knives much but YES! Having good balance so that it could be thrown was indeed something that went into the design of the Glock knife. Do you work with afiliation links regarding knives? If not i know a source where they cost like 24 €. Depending on where you look they go up into the 40s. The big downside of the knife is the sheath when you carry it on your LBE. They rattle. The worst thing is the people carrying them usually don`t register it themselfes. I have seen it in the military.
@TheModernSurvivalist5 жыл бұрын
I simply include the Amazon affiliation link for guys in America buying on Amazon. Being made in Austria its a bit cheaper when buying in the EU. Yes, it can rattle a bit but its a pretty easy fix. Try putting a couple rubber bands down the sheath.
@mrd70675 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernSurvivalist I see the high prices in shops in the EU all the time. i just didn`t want to name a source if you are against it. I know the rubberband/rangerband method. Then is still rattles in the sheath. Yes you can glue the outer line of paracord into the sheath but for this you have to have the stuff. The downside which comes with the rubberband is it removes the possibility to draw the knife fast one handed in an "oh sh.t" moment. Don`t get me wrong i own a few of them (without the raspel) but that`s a big downside.
@palmettolpop41485 жыл бұрын
Mr D I wonder if an inch wide and perhaps 2 inches long (or cut to size) strip if adhesive Velcro applied to the inside of the sheath on the outer side (the side not next to the body) might solve this problem. I mention the outer side for ease of re-sheathing the knife. It would be the fuzzy "female" side of the Velcro (or whatever hook and loop company you went with). If applied carefully, I think that might work. I would experiment myself, but my Glock knives are in storage right now on the other side of this continent. (US) LOL! So good luck to you. They are great knives, and the Glock sheath is terrific for equipment attachment and quick retention/release of the knife itself. I really do believe the rattle problem is solvable by anyone who earnestly wants to. Cheers!
@mrd70675 жыл бұрын
@@palmettolpop4148 The way i`m aware of to solve the rattle problem is to take paracord, pull the inner strings out and glue the cover into the sheath (down where the knifetip is because it`s usually the tip where it rattles). I have different knives and so far i like the sheath for my crkt sting and the belt sheath of my sheffield FS knife best. CS spikes are easy to carry and conceal (civilian and military use with velcro now) but both of mine start to rattle too. I have found that a lot of things one can use for defense rattle (e.g. my small expandable baton too but it`s tough as nails, mouthpiece is the same).
