So is this like an RPG in a box?
@Quantai888 жыл бұрын
From what I can see it is like an RPG/Board game without the need for a DM. Structured like a board game as far as rule set but definitely the heart of an RPG. Please correct me if I am wrong but thats the feel I get from it from following the game although I don't have it so haven't had a chance to actually play it yet.

I'm SO glad I Kickstarted this game. Thanks for the preview!
@davedogge22808 жыл бұрын
there was a late pledge option just after the kickstarter ended (there still is I think !) and I went for it, Rahdo did an early preview and that was the clincher. Don't forget your late pledge overseas backers Cephalofair. Word on the street is that he has almost sorted out his final product, just minor tweaks and minor trouble shooting. It looks like a winner to me, the potential perhaps to be a classic. Any hints about expansions ? :)

I know people love the legacy mechanism, but on a game like this I wish it was less permanent. Playing multiple groups would require complicated bookkeeping or multiple boxes. At $100 that's tough. Definitely looks like a labor of love though.
@MichaelsCatEmporium8 жыл бұрын
If you really wanted, I think you could probably mod podge + acrylic spray all the sticker sheets to make them stiff like tokens. Then, you could cut them all out and use velcro dots (or even poster tack) to affix them to the board. Just an idea!
@archeri20008 жыл бұрын
Isaac himself also mentioned that he'd add a PDF with instructions on how to make the game reset-able, for people who would want it that way :)
@warlord76i8 жыл бұрын
So when i put the stickers on the board thats it for the game if i want to replay once more? Why not tokens instead of stickers? Can be replayed this game?
@sailorpfat8 жыл бұрын
I agree, stickers was such a ridiculously poor choice to use. This "legacy" obsession is just stupid.
@warlord76i8 жыл бұрын
Agree totaly. This is a major settback for this game. I mean all those cards just going to the trash after im done?
@Daedwind8 жыл бұрын
Issac will make everything accessible for a reset on BGG after the game is released. ie: printable map, printable stickers, detailed instructions on what cards goes where. I understand the desire to keep your game untainted but this was not the initial intention of the designer. 95 scenarios should have you covered without the need to reset the game. The term Legacy is one that has been pushed upon by the interviewers trying to get a quick description of what's in the box. This game is more of an massive progressive campaign that enables you to change the world as you progress. It also enables anyone to join in the story at any given time, create a character, join your party, participate in short story lines, take a break, come back in the group for more adventures. All this without breaking the balance of the game.
@archeri20008 жыл бұрын
Actually, most of the cards remain relevant throughout the game. Sure, when you get your higher level cards for your character, you are probably not going to take your low level skills anymore, but that is true of virtually every RPG. Apart from that, the monsters' AI decks will definitely continue to be used. You can always play through scenarios you have completed before, just that they wouldn't be part of the 'story' and you'd not find loot in chests already searched. In fact, the only cards that would be discarded(as far as i know) are some of the town and road events, since they only happen once. Anyway, I'd say the stickers are a good choice for various reasons. In a game this massive, if all these stickers were tokens, it would take very long to set up. It is also more realistic that important events that have occured won't happen again for no good reason. Besides, by the time you get through all the 95 scenarios in the game, if you still desire more content, I am sure fans would have written their own scenarios and uploaded them, and the creator himself has mentioned that he will also upload extra content.
@Glic20008 жыл бұрын
All of the "legacy" components (the map, the stickers, etc) are available to print off. So if you really want to "start over" you can do that by printing new components. I don't think most people will want to start over, though, because the campaign is very long and is just going to get more interesting the deeper you get into it.

Very impressive; Elder Scrolls in a box! Not a fan of the two-handed solo mode, though. Isaac himself didn't seem enthusiastic about it.
@bigdream_dreambig6 жыл бұрын
One issue with solo mode is combat feels different. With one player controlling two characters, you're able to thoroughly understand the plans and actions of both characters ahead of time, so there's less uncertainty and you're more vulnerable to analysis paralysis trying to figure out the best coordinated solution. With 2 (or more) players playing multiple characters, you're forced into a bit more of an intuitive, fast-and-loose, plan-and-adjust type of combat with imperfect communication between characters that seems to be a better representation of what a real fight would be like.

I think $600 was between printings when new boxes were scarce. You should now be able to find it places online for the MSRP of $140.

When I checked out this game (or videos of this game) a while back, I wasn't interested. You guys must've done something right cuz now I'm really really interested! With so many characters, I wish it could be played by more than 4 players though.
@KingOfShadeEmpire8 жыл бұрын
The characters keep on retiring and new ones keep unlocking, so I'm sure they get played if people just don't stick to their first pick between retirements.

I ask myself, what are the benefits of such a game over a "real" RPG game? Seems like a visual presentation of the real thing with simplifications to fit for board game. Am I wrong?

I'm still unclear as to why, after spending so much time leveling up a character, we'd want to retire them and start all over with a new character... what's the incentive?
@KingOfShadeEmpire8 жыл бұрын
Getting to taste some variety in your gameplay. Also, it's stated in the rulebook that you *can* continue with the same character (basically recreating it with some of the progression carrying over).
@baredas8 жыл бұрын
To make it thematically more realistic I believe. Your guy has something he needs to get done and when he has he is happy to get away from all the fighting and despair. It's not like he is going to go around killing monsters just for the fun of it, it's dangerous after all.

I fear like this game is Non-linear Grind the Game. Does the game really hook a group enough to go through the whole multi-session leveling effort, or is this a board game for D&D players while dungeon master is preparing for next game? I just think that the depth of choices is linear even though everything else may be not.
@jaymeU27 жыл бұрын
Man I want this game!!! Looks massive! and all you clowns whining about Isaac being lame. I'd put 20 to 1 on it that if you were put in front of camera, it would be a colossal joke. Just shut up and enjoy the video.

Seem Isaac was a little unprepared to explain a game of this magnitude, still unsure of what s going on in this epic RPG system !

Yeah I found it hard to listen to him. Probably not the best rep for this game
@PlaycoolChOnline8 жыл бұрын
I listened to some of his interviews, it's just the way he talks. :) To get a feel of the game, you can check also Rahdo that did a now very famous runthrough for the game when it was kickstarted.
@JohnCiciulla8 жыл бұрын
creepyshadow It seems Isaac is understandably very conscious of letting any spoilers out of the bag. I think it makes this game really hard to explain it reveal too much - which makes it hard to sell!
@bigdream_dreambig6 жыл бұрын
creepyshadow It didn't help that the interviewers kept asking him new questions about different parts of the game, forcing him have to jump around in his explanation. I've read the rulebook from start to finish (my game arrives shortly), and one thing I find VERY impressive is that, although Gloomhaven is complex, nearly every rule makes complete intuitive sense. You're not going to have to remember a bunch of arcane things. Once you get rolling, it should become second nature.
