He still likes to check out what he can pull from the hedge on occasions, not as bad as during the first few months, and well, thankfully it was winter and the tubers were not awake, but, when they started to sprout, I was watching him.... he was not interested! Thank goodness, because, I want to grow these *stomps feet! 😅 Now the vine looks like something that should not be anywhere on the patio, because they have done the deed! I may get a second flush from a tuber that has extended itself. there is still plenty of time. The digging up is going to be fun. HI Justin 😍💐 in your climate, it is not going to take long... I am close to saying 'Whaaatt??' simply because of where you are at! These things can be invasive in your area, so you have a rare one that has not bloomed yet! But, I am sure that the tubers it will develop after the vine you have now, will bloom! Thank you for making this! I am definitely going to find some tubers next year and try these out. I will have to grow them in a container as well and lift them but I have begonias I do that with.I try to avoid eating most lilies many types of them are toxic. My husky is the pickiest eater ever my beagle on the other hand will eat almost anything but mostly bacon. Sapphire is my huskies name he has blue eyes. Daisy is my beagle she is good not to eat plants thank goodness or I wouldn’t have any left. Thanks again for info on these beauties! They would be something special here where I live.

What a gorgeous flower 💚 You know, I heard once, and have believed ever since, that that a weed is just a plant growing in the wrong place. I wish I knew who said that originally as it has shaped my view of “weeds” ever since. I have some beautiful chocolate lilies, native to Australia growing in a tub. HI Sharon 😍💐 so good to see you! Thank you so much for watching a non orchid related video 🙏🏼 I heard that saying once, and I heard it from David Attenborough. I don't know if it was a direct quote from him, originally, or if he got it from somewhere else, but, I remember hearing it in one of the documentaries of his. And I thought,... he has a point there! 😅 I used to love my volunteer sunflowers in my gardens, when I had them! It would be so nice to see them pop up randomly in the beds, knowing that a bird had dropped the seed during the winter, from the bird feeder, or... from where ever. Not that sunflowers are weeds, but, if they are in a bed that has no other sunflowers, it does look odd, still... I left them and enjoyed them. So, that chocolate lily... I looked it up and wow!! Now that is something I may need to keep in the back of my mind and see if tubers are available here in Europe! When times get better and I can treat myself. They would do well here 👍🏼👍🏼the blooms are beautiful! Love that purple color 🤩 thank you so much for the heads up on something that looks beautiful and smells beautiful and is not an orchid!! That is where I grew up and yes... they were all over the place. I loved them so much that it wasn't something I thought about back then. The tubers we get here, in Europe, are all from varieties that are sterile. @@NinjaOrchids Gracias.Le escribo desde Chile,paìs que no nos permite comprar productos vejetales al extranjero por resguardar las fronteras de pestes foràneas en pro de las exportaciones que se hacen desde acà a Europa,Asia,Norte Amèrica,etc,etc. Eventualmente empresas grandes de floricultura importan rizomas y bulbos principalmente de Holanda pero deben hacer cuarentena en instalaciones propias y los excedentes de los productos internados son puestos en manos de comerciantes minoristas del rubro.Por lo tanto,adquirir algo de lo que nos gustarìa cultivar es casi una loterìa.Le hago este comentario para que sus excedentes de GLORIOSAS los ponga a la venta en la Empresa Eb..,Y asi con su experiencia y rectitud harìa felices a tantos que sì pueden comprar sin restricciones en paises vecinos.

🦒🌺💖🙌Your gloriosa vine looks glorious even without flowers, adding up with the richness of its green lush foliage 🌿🌿 Couldn't you cover the top of pot during rainy winters, having the dirt on the dry side, to avoid having to dig the tubers out? I beleive animals do know when not to chew on a toxic plant but it can happen and we cannot be too careful because many grown plants are toxic in a garden. More dangerous with children. I never had problems with cats or dogs chewing on cultivated plants. However they like to chew on grasses and they do it regularly if they are allowed to. Not my dogs as they cannot reach the lawn but cats do it, they go everywhere in a garden. Olivia had a problem a couple of years ago, she stopped eating and she almost died, doctors never understood what the problem was as medical exams were inconclusive. When she got better I wondered if she had ate any nasty weed which may have happened. If so, she is certainly being more wise now. BTW, is that a fig tree growing behind the pot? It sure looks like one. I miss my fig tree, at least I miss the good part of it. It was a huge tree and the figs were amazing, large and juicy. The production was amazing, we would carry trays and trays of figs to Lisbon for family and friends but the problem was that, not everybody is fond of figs, they would mature all at the same time and last only for 3 or 4 days before rotting and then, the ones we could not reach would fall down and splash on the ground and attract flies... not really a good tree to have in a small space and so we had to cut it down. FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 meine liebe Freundin! I have thought of covering the pot, yes.... but, these tubers don't end up where I planted them, they die back and grow a new growing point which could be anywhere in the container, and, if squashed against the edge, then it could be too cold against the container exterior and cause other issues. After I realized that possibility, I just feel safer to lift them, unless of course, some vines are still green when we get into End December, and then, like last year, I will leave them in, knowing that I have some saved and won't loose all of them. It will be interesting to see where the tubers ended up in the pot and what they will look like this time around 😃 besides, I have to send some to someone, right? I am so glad that Olivia recovered from whatever mystery went on there! That must have been so scary!! And yes, I have a fig tree growing in the background, but it won't be there for long! Today I tried to pull it out, but despite it's small size, it appears to be far too rooted in, so, I have going to have to cut it and then do something with vinegar to kill it off. If, it were to come out with roots in tact when I try to get it out again tomorrow, then I am going to pot it up and see how far I can go to cultivate it in a pot. I certainly don't want a fruity and flyie mess on my patio! I do get a little tired of what the dogs do, after I have spent a lot of time to clean up the patio. Actually, considering that I have been Cinderella for the past 2 days, you would not exactly know if you walked into my home. I am a little frustrated and annoyed because of not being able to enjoy the fruits of my labor for any amount of time. Living alone was fabulous at one point! 🙄 so, no mature fig tree for me on the patio, but I LOVE figs!! Its a shame when I used to get a whole bunch of figs from people that had trees, and could not eat them fast enough, and I much prefer them fresh as opposed to making some kind of chutney or marmalade etc etc. I love then fresh, and in a salad, soooo much! We had a warm day today, not hot... nothing above 30ºC but it is pleasant, for sure! I have recently received my Gloriosa lilies from High County gardens by mail and they are very healthy. First time growing these and I want to try to naturalize them into my zone 8a garden . I'm mostly considering how wet the soil is here in my area and nutrient deficient. Thank you for your descriptions of growing. If you will any information I can use is appreciated.

They truly are fun to grow. I would highly recommend that you lift your's early fall. If you have wet soil, you will need to work the patch where you plan to plant your's with a lot of sand, or horticultural grit so that the tubers don't rot out. While in active growth they love a lot of water, and will use it up, they do not like to be in wet all the time. Their outer 'bark' like protection of the actual tuber is too thin and the tuber is too exposed to wet conditions. Also, this past winter, was the first time I did not lift mine out of my container, just to see what would come back, and my lowest temperatures are 41ºF, we have had very little rain, and only 2 out of 12 have come back. So, as much as getting them to naturalize is a wonderful idea, I doubt very much that in zone 8a they will survive the winters. Even if you were to mulch heavily or use a frost cloth. However, depending on how many you have, you may want to try some in the garden and some in a pot so that you can lift the potted ones for safe keeping and see what happens to the ones in the landscape. I sprinkle a little bit of slow release fertilizer underneath the soil of the tubers for the roots to find, very lightly though. Place the tubors on top of that layer and cover them up. Where they grow naturally, they are in very nutrient free deficient soil, and to some degree, sand only. So, if you want to pamper your's then a little slow release fertilizer will do for the entire season, no need to repeat. HI Sheila 🥰💐 it has it's defences, that is for sure! and yes... it has been used! I can't name a specific case, but I know that it has been used, and for that reason it is fundamental to mention this plant in your surroundings if for some reason one were to think it is just a case of food poisoning. In Kenya, no one was just dismissed as having food poisoning... these grew everywhere and well, seeds can get into a picnic snack in the garden etc. So.... I had never mentioned that before and I thought oopsss.... 'maybe' that is something that really needs to be addressed🤦🏼‍♀️🙏🏼 thank you so much for watching, Sheila!! P.S.: in countries where this lily grows like a weed, it is very rare that anyone got away with actually poisoning someone, because hospitals everywhere would immediately test for colchecin, but... *cough not so much in other countries. 🫢

"I have one pet that is a notorious chewer" That darn Baloo.😉 The one with the different leaves, has that one ever bloomed do you know? There are a couple of different species, I know modesta has a leaf structure like that but being a yellow flowered plant, it wouldn't seem to fit with that bright red growing point. It's also usually sold as seed. But you never know, maybe you got something special. Also, I learned something new today. Making baked apples on the smoker makes the most amazing dessert. Unlike baking them in the oven, the butter and brown sugar doesn't melt in the smoker. You end up with this crunchy cinnamon-sugar center, rather than a syrup that gets spooned over them when you serve them. The crunchy sugar center versus the soft baked apple was a dreamy combination. Oh yes, I will be making those again.

If in doubt, always check Baloo! 🤪 So, I cannot say if that tuber bloomed or not, because when I dig them up, they are not in the same place as when I put them in the container, they 'move' around because the main tuber dies while growing a new one for next season, so... I have no idea! I would like to have the one that has the really ruffled and more slender petals that curl up, they are so elegant looking and we had many of those in Kenya as well. But... that vine has not grown since I showed it in the video. While the others are lack luster and on their way out, having done their job, that one, same size and no further progress. It is so strange, but certainly interesting 😬 well... you have been at it again, Chef Michael! that sounds delicious and I like the idea of the crunch against the softer texture of a warm apple! Yum! It is advisable to give them some form of trellising to grab on to. While they 'hold hands' with the extended vine that grows from each leaf, and they find another leaf around which they will curl the tendrils, they are not strong enough at the stem to withstand any strong wind, so, they will grow bolt upright without needed any support, but a trellis to keep them from snapping is advisable. Once they develop their foliage, they will become top heavy and even 'holding hands' via their leaves will not be sufficient to prevent them from falling over and snapping. As they grow on a single stem, they do branch in some instances, but if the stem coming from the tuber snaps, there is no secondary growth that will ensure a pretty blooming. 👍🏼

I sprinkle a little bit of slow release fertilizer underneath the soil of the tubers for the roots to find, very lightly though. Place the tubors on top of that layer and cover them up. Where they grow naturally, they are in very nutrient free deficient soil, and to some degree, sand only. So, if you want to pamper your's then a little slow release fertilizer will do for the entire season, no need to repeat.
