In pure Received Pronunciation, we employ the glottal stop only in initial position when a word begins with a vowel, like ask, old, under, etc.

In German, people employ glottal stops very often, like in Beamte [bəˈʔamtə], Verantwortung [fɛrˈʔantvɔrtʊŋ], Theater [teˈʔɑːtər], etc.

I remember years ago looking at imagery of the glottis when glottal stops were being made. I guess it was sonograms. Anyway, the data indicated the glottal stop definitely involved PARTIAL CLOSURE of the glottis.

The biggest problem with the glottal stop is the writing system doesn't capture it. Another problem is if we think of it as a variant of consonants, then which consonant is it a variant of? The same issue comes up with unstressed central vowels like 'shwa'.

In an uneducated type of English, people omit the initial "h" as in hand, horse, etc. They replace it with a glottal stop.

And how about hour? LOL. I would use the term 'non-standard' rather than uneducated.
@ramamonato5039 Жыл бұрын
@@cejannuzi No. The word "hour" and "honest" are not Germanic words. They were taken from French. In French, all initial "h" are always not pronounced. What I am talking about is native English words.
