@@squidandchips yeah I agree. I’d be fuming. I’d imagine he’s taken a considerable pay cut too. I think the issue is with England is that the number 8 role is probably out most competitive position. So many talented players in that role

@@squidandchips Borthwick (and a lot of international coaches tbh) likes a big, powerful carrier at 8. We have so many back rowers that can do what Mercer does but he's not a big ball carrier. When there are 8s waiting in the wings like Chandler C-S and Alfie Barbeary, not to mention pace-y powerhouses like Ben Earl, I can't see Mercer getting a look in... especially after his tantrum.

Mercer has always been one of those players where I'm like, he doesn't look like he should be that good. Just appears small and unathletic. Goes to show how much skill matters in rugby.

Yep Mercer gets the assist for Exeters second try!! He usually nowhere to be seen when it comes to defence so far play for the assist

Yes Mercer is awesome, but Test Rugby is a completely different kettle of fish... Christian Wade for example. Absolutely smashed the premiership teams on the wing, but test standard? 🤔 Is Mercer's complete game really better than Earl's? In test rugby, almost all of his highlights reel here would be impossible. None of those pathetic missed tackle attempts from your opponents, nowhere near the same amount of time on the ball to execute. It's 30 of the best players in the world on one field. It's night and day, literally a different sport.

more or less yeah, depending on the opponent but six nations or a world cup for sure it is night and day, however it depends on the player, i saw many cracks at club level who didn't cut it at test match level, others that looked pedestrian at club level turned it up a notch playing international rugby.
