But i think they're the best gloves for hema

Me and my brother use Red Dragon ones. They are like lacrosse gloves yes, but they have overlapping plates on the fingers. They are good for a beginner but you can't do too much with the blade, as they are somewhat bulky and limit how well you can actually move your hand. They are also smaller than other gloves in that they don't extend past the wrist, leaving the forearm exposed.

Skallagrim, that material sparring gloves are made of is rubber kind of thing that is used for shoe outsoles (which is called styroguma in polish - not sure about translation though). Basically you could get them in most of the stores with shoemaker supplies and make those gauntlets on your own for just fraction of the price. The wrist is made out of cordura nylon and plastic plates sewn inside. Also, the wrist is not really much of a weakspot if you bunch the glove up a bit, so the plates overlap. It doesnt inhibit the movement much and definitely increases protection.

We use Red Dragon gloves a lot at EHMS, that is the HEMA club in Espoo, Finland. The y are our go-ro gloves for one-handed sword use, because they allow so much more flexibility, and a smaller blade doesn't require as much protection. However, if you are using a longsword or other two-handed swords, you can only use these for light sparring. Other remarks: really cheap, but will not last as long as other gloves (but that's not a huge issue, because of the said price), quite flexible, do not hinder movement as much as many other gloves. So, very much like the lacrosse gloves, but way better protection; still, do NOT use with two-handed swords.

How do the HEMA gloves compare against historically-accurate gauntlets? Were some of the gauntlets you shown historically accurate?
@CZProtton5 жыл бұрын
None. The Gothic Armoury was closest to being accurate, but were still not good. HEMA gloves always* work better than historical gloves. We just have better materials, better manufacturing techniques and their gauntlets were made for war, ours are made for sparring. *there can be a shitty HEMA glove, but what I have seen or tried (SPES heavy, sparring gloves, Koning glove) were all better than historical gauntlets.

In Kendo we use gloves similiar as the Hood model gloves expect that there's no gap. They're basically from leather, but you really can't feel the hits or vibration from the hits, so you'd probably be okay with these kind of gloves for HEMA. I think?
@solidsnake4348 жыл бұрын
I've been using the Gdansk / Hoof sparring gloves for almost a year now, practicing HEMA (Fiore style) and I have to agree on everything, just be aware new buyers that sometimes factory won't do a perfect cut between the fingers and a little bump of rubber will be on excess, you can easily cut it with a normal cutter or knife. They are quite confortable once you bend them a little with normal use, also I recommend using any kind of light glove inside the sparring gloves to avoid bruises and sore skin caused by friction. something Skall doesn't mention is that the wrist actually has light laminated pads in the wrist, like rings. It does offer very light protection, but if you get a hit in there you are going to feel it.
@solidsnake4348 жыл бұрын
Also grapples are a bit hard to do, and grabbing the sword of the opponent once in close combat might be a little tricky since the gloves don't open that much with your hand.

Skall, on the topic of gloves, would you say a leather "Musketeer" glove (early 17th century) can be properly used (thus- not destroying itself) with a Basket-Hilt sword? Thanks Skallagrim. I've been trying to find the perfect gloves for years! I don't fight steel, though I've considered the articulated steel gauntlets. I do shinai, rapier with off hand, some cut & thrust. Seems like every other week I used to take a hard hit to whatever part of my hand was least protected. My best gloves so far have been shooters gloves like the type used in the military for heavy weapons (eBay used ~ 35.00 USD) and the Red Dragon HEMA sparring gloves. (new ~ 90.00 USD) I think you can get a general idea of pros and cons just looking at them. The Red Dragon are adapted from lacrosse gloves (I have a pair of the Brine also) but a little more flexible and less expensive that the comparable level of protection. I sell the Red Dragon on my eBay site so I may not be completely unbiased, but I think when you see the photos of my own pair you'll see how functional they are, more flexible than one might guess from the way they look. I am single male so I have to take these things seriously,

I own the SPES heavies and I'm a fan of them for their superior protection. The thumb tips can be a bit vulnerable, though, and I've seen someone get a bad thumb injury while wearing these. I bought the separate fingertip protectors (they fit on the fingers inside the glove) and I just use the two thumbs (the SPES heavy already protects the other fingers well enough). So if you're looking for the best protection at a reasonable price, I think this is the way to go, but be sure to get the added protection for your thumbs. Now I will say that you lose some mobility in exchange for the protection. It's a little challenging to do anything other than a hammer grip with these. Putting your thumb on the blade isn't too difficult, but it is slightly harder than if you had bare hands. The grip on them doesn't open as wide as I'd like, which makes it a little slower to let go with my left hand in order to grapple, and grabbing an opponent's sword, arm, or whatever is notable more difficult with these gloves. That said, I don't think you can currently do better without sacrificing protection (although I haven't seen in person what the Konig glove can do yet, and we don't know what the Pro Gauntlet will offer yet either - however these two also come at a higher price tag). On the other hand, if you want to get into practicing HEMA and are on a very tight budget (i.e., can't afford even the SPES heavies), then lacrosse gloves are a reasonable better-than-nothing alternatives. I would only spar with synthetic weapons in that case though. I think a feder or other steel trainer could too easily cause significant injury through lacrosse gloves. (Plus we're talking about a budget, and synthetics are also less expensive than steel.) You can get used lacrosse gloves for super cheap - I think I got mine for $15 (used) at Play It Again Sports.

When I was into 14-15th century reenactment the most common hand protection used were padded mittens stuffed with tow or horse hair and chainmail overlay. Those were used both with synthetic and dull metall swords and I can't remember anyone getting real injury using those during my 2 years of training. Pretty heavy as you'd expect, but I ones hit a pal in the groin with a lucky throw - he was down on the floor for a couple of minutes =) And so was I, laughing...

@MisdirectedSasha8 жыл бұрын
They look a bit less bulky than hockey or lacrosse gloves, but they have the same issue where they lack any protection to the sides of the fingers. They're designed to stop an impact from a spherical ball a few centimeters across, not a very thin blade. For HEMA, or at least for full-speed fights with steel weapons, you need something designed specifically to stop a sword.
