It's because people struggle to realize that natrual doesn't always mean good and unnatrual doesn't always mean bad. Companies have actually taken advantage of this simple misunderstanding and will sell products and call them "natural". As you can imagine, those products could be awful, and people would still buy them just because they believe natural = good.
@longbeing
@longbeing Жыл бұрын
@@stevensanchez1192exactly. The most potent toxin in the world is all-natural, and unnaturally increasing the levels of vitamin D in foods like milk has saved many millions of people from an awful disease called rickets. Both humanity’s and nature’s creations are a mixed bag, and I could give a lot more examples of bad natural things and good synthetic things. (Also supplements have virtually no oversight and natural supplement manufacturers could be putting anything in their products with no consequences)

It depends on the GMO. Some GMOs are actually pretty horrible and when you are at the store, you don't always know which GMOs are in your food. Take the Roundup supporting GMOs for an example. Technically, the plants themselves aren't harmful, but the pesticides they are supposed to work with are. Roundup has recently been banned in many areas and has had many lawsuits filed against it's makers do to it's link to cancer. The worst thing about this story is that people have suspected Roundup of cancerous properties for over a decade but patents on both pesticides and GMOs grant the owner a measure of legal protection against those that would investigate against them. Honestly, it's not all that surprising that everyone seems a to be paranoid all the time.
@ayajade6683
@ayajade6683 Жыл бұрын
@@nathanschmidt4272 yeah you're just a conspiracy crackpot one step away from Qanon especially as you don't understand the roundup settlement it's been on the bottle for years as with all pesticides and weed killer may cause cancer. They even mention the PPE gear you need to lower your risk. Class action lawsuits almost always settle as they'd never win in court and it wasted everyone's time as you can't prove exactly what caused your cancer 100% unless it's genetic.

These fish are illegal in the Netherlands, but not for cruelty reasons. We don’t allow genetically modified pets or plants in common trade. Compared to selective breeding, genetic modification is a major wild card, adding genes from different clades of life. And civilians can’t be trusted not to release pets or have them escape. Since we don’t have much research yet on what it might do in the wild, there’s a ban. Sure, glowfish probably just die, but these aren’t the only modified creatures. It’s a general ban. A crop that’s more insect resistant could become an invasive species, for example, so it can’t be farmed. The laws will probably change once more research is done. Before anyone argues, I can’t change the law.

When I was a kid there were fluorescent fish that had dyes injected in to them. It was in the early 90s that we had some. They were called “neon glass fish”. My mom got us some and I remember being horrified when I found out those fluorescent colors weren’t natural and were injected. I felt so bad for my fishies. I was so relieved the first time I saw GloFish and someone explained to me how they got their color, because at first I was thinking they were like the neon glass fish, but with a lot more dye.

They also only glow under UV light, like some flowers, saltwater fish, and some insects. I'm quite sure It's genetic modification, and breeding. like corn... What we eat as corn was modified and selectively bread, corn was the size of a finger hundreds of years ago before humans selectively bred it, and now genetically modify it to introduce chemical and insect resistance.

I live in New Hampshire and there are still shops that sell actual injection and dip dyed fish. I hate it so much. It’s totally cruel, totally a scam, and totally unnecessary given that Glofish are available as a less cruel, more vibrant, and permanent color alternative (at the same stores no less!). Some of these stores are even our “best” rated stores in the state. When I try to talk to them, I get the runaround of “oh okay I’ll tell the manager.” “Oh I’ll talk to the owner.” “Oh I’ll talk to our supplier.” Nothing changes. When I post online I get called a snowflake or whatever useless insult 🙄 There are soooo many cool fish out there to buy instead, it drives me nuts that people are still using dye methods that will lead to the fish falling ill and dying. Even if the fish beats the odds and lives, the dye will disappear over a short time

The process is not painful at all! Jellyfish DNA is injected into the egg which is what causes the glowing colors. However, what Luke was talking about in the first half of the video is a real thing. Fish can be dyed and tattooed, and *that* is what's cruel. GloFish can live perfectly normal and healthy lives, but dyed fish often develop life-long health issues and their lives are often cut short by the dying process. It's a very interesting rabbit hole to dig yourself into, I'd highly suggest reading more about it if you're a fish nerd ^^

Glowfish are actually some of the most ethical fish out there. They cannot do damage to the environment if they get released because they'll get eaten immediately. They have very few health issues. And they just don't have issues like any other fish.

@@Thunderbolt1684they actually only glow undr blacklight. But because they are trademarked by s company they're sterilized before sale. And any breeding of them is illegal. So there's basically NO chance of them being invasive

I’ve had 3 glowfish Bill, Bob, and Timmy (yes all of them were males) unfortunately whenever I introduced Timmy the same day bill started to die. The nest day went by smooth then bob died so now it’s Timmy and Trevor (well Trevina because she had 13 babies 9 of which didn’t make it 😢) and Timmy is doing good thankfully. The reason bill and bob died was because the first batch of glowfish for the year had diseases and very few lived a full adulthood. But I think my glowfish and Molly bread…. So now I have 4 baby mollies! Love you Luke’s Goldie’s! Fly high angels

I remember when actual dyed fish were sold. They typically didn't survive long enough for the dye to fade, but those that did always struggled long-term and looked the same as the non-dyed ones. Glo-fish are still a waste of money, in my opinion, because they typically just get blah as they mature and are almost never kept by those with experience, so they don't even get a chance

Added bonus: the process sterlizes them so they can't breed, meaning if they were to escape in nature, they can't crossbreed with native fish

I thought that it wasn’t quite right with what you said with them being “injected with dyes” since they would probably dim over time with the immunity system slowly cleaning them out. Wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense. But, still had that small amount of trust since you’re the expert in fishies. Tells a lot how much trust we can put into a person based on their experience.

Also luminescency is a trait quite often found in fish. Deep water fish to be precise. So most likely the gene was taken from some species that evolved it and implanted into species that was close enough relative to accept it, rather than by random experimentation.

My concern is the same one I have with GFP axolotls which is that their eyes glow as well-meaning they can’t escape blinding light in their eyeballs. It seems commonly accepted with axolotls (which are already light sensitive) that they shouldn’t be kept under lights that cause them to glow but for some reason no one seems to talk about this with Glofish so I’m not sure if it’s just because less discussion about light sensitivity happens with fish or whether the Glofish gene is somehow different (which I doubt cuz I can literally see their eyes glowing in pictures).

I zoned out for the first half of the video so I was confused what the title was about. I rewatched it and was VERY confused because I know they have a disclaimer at the GloFish description like "These fish are NOT injected with any dyes, it is genetic fluorescence" so I was kinda mad like "Luke is a reputable fish owner!!! Why is he saying this?!" but thank you for proving misinformation through example!
