I've been shooting landscapes, seascapes, and some wildlife for most of my photography days. I've always been intrigued with macro photography, but have never really invested the time necessary looking for compositions and taking all the steps to make a good image. I sold a couple lenses I have never used all that much and bought an 80mm macro lens. As I'm waiting for it to be delivered, I've been searching for good quality content related to what I want to do-macro and light painting. Then, today, I found this video. I appreciate both your photography style and the way you explained in such great detail the post-processing steps. I'm sure your views of this specific tutorial will go up a lot as I follow along with your post-processing steps while I edit my own files! Thanks much for the inspiration!

A great tutorial, I couldn't wait to try it. I don't have a macro lens and the only mushroom I found was a bit to old for light to shine through so I had to illuminate it from below. My light was too white and I had a lousy composition so had to 'move' my mushroom to a dead branch in PS. I photographed the same mushroom from 2 sides to duplicate it. It was a lot of post processing work which, with better planning, I could have done in camera, but I'm reasonably pleased with my first attempt.

Your pace, your instructions and explanations were spot on. Sonia everything shot at the same f stop, so for example 2.8. What about when you illuminate? Do you refocus individual areas like a stack or do you shoot at say f16 so it’s all in focus front to back?
@OliverHerbold2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I shoot them all on the same f-stop, usually somewhere around f/7.1 or 8. Except when I take a separate one for a smooth backdrop with open aperture. The illuminated images are on the same focal points as the others and with the dame aperture settings. In the macro range you will have rarely everything in focus with one take.

Super tutorial! I just didn't quite understand one thing: At the beginning, you use focus stacking to achieve a perfectly sharp scene from front to back. But then, when taking "illuminated" shots, you shoot at the same aperture but only with a single focus. When stacking the layers in Photoshop, these "illuminated" layers are blended together in "normal" mode, which means that besides the desired "illumination" in the masked area, they can also be blurred because the flashlight was focused only at one distance. So, I think for even sharper results, series of "illuminated" shots should be taken during focus stacking, always before refocusing on the next distance.
@marclavoie38086 ай бұрын
I thought the same. You would want to take the illuminated frames at the different stack depths.

@@OliverHerbold Gosh! That's hard as they are all great. I always ask myself, if I was going to buy one which would it be? This tends to concentrate the mind more. I think 17.48 is lovely and almost alien. 17.52 is beautiful and looks like a little light is inside, second place and very nearly my favourite. 17.35 is a wonderful and interesting group of mushrooms, but, my favourite must be the stunning 17.43 which is so sharp and illuminated with darkened backdrop, which is the purpose here, and the insect also gives it even more interest. Stunning! Just my opinion but the next person will have their favourite which will be different, as you know. Thanks Oliver. 👌

Wonderful tutorial, Oliver. Can I ask, when you focus stack, do you repeatedly move the focal point further in (by slight zoom) or do you just move the focal point to another mushroom by selecting a different point in the viewfinder (without moving the camera)?

Sometimes I try focusing on different points, usually to find out the I'm missing an area. Means, to be on the safe side, move gradually in and make sure, ou have in focus images for all areas.
