Well I'd say the main two reasons they didn't use the normal skin, is that it's a copyrighted skin that's not actually meant to be a cat, and even if they did get the rights to it, it would have been too weird having an anthropomorphic cat walking around with allt he human characters.

For example my friend is making a 3d modelling software and another is making a song recognition app like Shazam and the first bit of the write up for it is looking at "rival" products. I've decided to make a video game based around murder mystery and I suddenly remembered this because of the mechanics of choosing how you go about interrogating people and the multiple answers to questions. I ended up settling on The Wolf Among Us because it's by the same studio and has the same mechanics but more serious. So yeah, a pretty convoluted explanation but it happened I guess...
