A history of successful cooperation between Boeing and Saab now extends into a new technology area - precision weapons systems. Together both companies have proven that Boeing’s Small Diameter Bomb I, originally developed for use by aircraft, can be adapted for launch from a ground artillery system. The companies recently tested the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), integrating the SDB I and M26 rocket motor technologies for the Multiple Launch Rocket System. GLSDB allows the artillery system to reach targets from significantly longer distances, and engage hard-to-reach targets, while maintaining the Small Diameter Bomb’s flight manoeuvrability and accuracy.

I think this has so much potential for the navy and Marines. The six pack cell is so small, they could be stacked on warships. An SDB is roughly the equivalent of an 8” shell. This would allow naval gunfire support of landing forces cheaply and accurately. It would also allow your forces to stay out of the range of most artillery. Yes, SAMs could easily shoot them down. But they’re so cheap and small, you could saturate the system. Remember, at the time you’re landing troops, You need to have suppressed most anti ship missile batteries or large Sam systems. Seems like a cheap easy option to me.

The possibilities are nearly endless. Bound only by range and resupply. With enough reloads, a single HiMARS could dominate a 150km zone. Set up a few batteries of HiMARS with these on Taiwan, supported by Iron Dome nearby and C-RAM on site. Patriot for overhead protection. A cave to park in and store reload pods. I'm not sure Taiwan would need much else to protect it's shores and troops.
@donarthiazi2443
@donarthiazi2443 Жыл бұрын
@@slartybarfastb3648 I like your idea. There are not many suitable landing spots for _Red China_ to bring in an invasion force via the sea. The few available are a long way from Taipei. Not just a long way but the route there is PACKED with made to order natural ambush spots on an invading army. That's after taking the beach in the first place... which is saying A LOT. Taiwan has a dense network of anti-aircraft in place already. The HIMARS plan would perhaps make it perfect. The problem is that _Red China_ has stored absolutely massive stocks of missiles that would batter the island into submission unless the Taiwanese have a nearby foolproof method of knocking them out of the sky.
@slartybarfastb3648
@slartybarfastb3648 Жыл бұрын
@@donarthiazi2443 The future (or present even) seems to be dominated by smart ground launched missile artillery. The counter is probably a necessity for Iron Dome type batteries and powerful electronic warfare and EW countermeasures. Must be able to interfere with guidance systems and data links. Big, long rang SAMs and rediculous amount of high density local air-missile defenses. Near future battle between equal modern peers will look like a swarm of incoming missiles and interceptors.

It can, when Russian supply lines get choked off, and command centres go up in smoke.

You don't get the picture, do you ? It has 150km range, which means, Ukrainians could target Russian supplies and command centers far behind enemy lines.

Take it a step further and rail launch from a Grippen or F16, to extend the range to something crazy with the extra altitude and speed. Cheap, accurate and uses up old motors that are plentiful in inventory. I recommend testing it in Russian occupied Ukraine :)

The SDB is already qualified to launch from Gripens and F-16s. Given the altitude, you really don't need to rail launch. GLSDB is really about giving soldiers on the ground a way to launch these things as well when air support isn't readily available.

Why am I getting an ad for deodorant? Some algorithm decided that, as I'm here shopping for long range guded artillery, I might want to buy some smellies whle I'm here?
