If you hear Gluck's music through this kind of voice,it's possible to realise what genius means.

Bellisima, she is so expressive. I feel like I'm sharing in the character's heartache, rage and disbelief. Mind you, I don't speak French, it's just what I hear. Petibon knows how to engage the listener. The orchestra did a fantastic job of keeping the tension, which further adds to the drama of this piece. Lovely, I always come back to this one.

Petibon is even better as an artist than she is as a singer. She's got so much musicality and dramatic expressivity through her voice, and she really knows how to convey all kinds of emotion and meaning through her voice, from the lightest to the most powerful, what is even more remarkable given that hers is a light, leggero voice, not a thick, dramatic voice. I admire her singing a lot. This recording shows her skills to a great effect. Gluck's music comes alive and the melody becomes tremendously expressive as it should be.

She is so true to the lyric and the underlying poetry of Torquato Tasso, as rendered into the French of the day. This was Gluck’s favorite of his operas - he would be astonished and very pleased. O, to be attractive as this, to live every life so fully and beautifully, night after night, forever!

Not since Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient sang the title role have I heard tell of an Armide so compellingly true to the score.

(And that’s from the source: her conductor in Berlin and Dresden, who went on to compose a bit himself, ever emulating her effects.)

@VivaMariaCallas :)) she lacks volume because she is a pure coloratura... Sills was a lyric instrument with some natural agility but trained hard for the coloraturas she sung. However Sills could actually sing in an opera hall.. not only coloratura roles but also lyric ones. Patricia is still young, but for now she can`t be heard in an opera hall unless she is singing lighter roles... that`s why she also sings a lot of baroque= small orchestra

Serinia4melodic O, I think she could fill a house, and then some!

For the record, I heard Petibon singing live. In Munich, at the Nationaltheater (2100 seats). It was Rigoletto, which is definitely not a "light" role. And it was crystal clear.
