Seeing the variegated birds brings back memories. Used to have a lot of variegated reds but decided not to keep any 6 years ago. Now I maybe get 4 very lightly variegated reds per season. They just didn’t sell fast enough for me

I never used to bother with them, but I have really taken a shine to them after seeing Peter Finns birds. They say you need some black to show a deeper red.

Need your expert advice on this (Mymth or Not). Since we breeders sometime find that the 1st egg in the clutch is fertile but the 2nd and third are not fertile but the 4th is fertile. This is a response from a Biologist Anna - The male does not have to be with the female the whole time. One mating is enough to fertilize all the eggs. In birds, the female is able to store the sperm until an egg is ready. The egg has to be fertilized at a certain point of development. There is no way sperm could get into an egg with a shell on it. Mating can occur three weeks before the first egg is laid and still fertilize all the eggs, but most canaries mate a few days before the first egg is laid. In many birds, one mating will be enough to fertilize two separate clutches. The embryo in a fertilized egg doesn't start developing until it is incubated at the proper temperature. If the mother pushes one egg to the side or has so many she can't properly sit on all of them, some embryos may never develop. Thank you in advance.

I have never found any rhyme or reason to the fertility of eggs, some years all eggs are fertile with 4 or 5 eggs in the nest the the next year it may only be the odd one, when each year the preparation has been the same

why are the baby look white when the parents are red factor? aren't the young supposed to be light orange in color? TY

No, they will colour up when they moult out and are fed with carophyll, they should still have white wing and tail feathers, some will turn out as ivory
