I may be biased because I've always been a faithful French player, but this has to be the best video in the whole "GM analysis" series. Great stuff.. and no, never "too long" when it comes to slow games analysis

Welcome back Simon! I've grown accustomed to your face. Some things to be seen in that lovely little video intro: a grave marker for Harry; French and italian flags (for the French and Sicilian openings no doubt); a pipe; a wandering mouse; a duck (f*** status undetermined); a flying dragon (named Dorf perhaps?); Charlie the Chess Cat; and a demonic figure looking out from a top-right tower window -- Ben Finegold maybe... heh heh). I must be starting to absorb some of your wonderful teachings. This time I was able to anticipate a LOT of your recommended moves. Even that Rook versus King-and-pawn ending was instructive, as that sort of ending comes a lot more often than one might think. BTW as of this posting this video has 218 likes and ZERO dislikes. Guess Mr. Swinemold -- er, Finegold -- hasn't watched it yet, har de har har. Hope you do some material from the British Open as well. You did okay there, but not as well as the collective strength of your opponents suggested you should have. I'm pretty sure nobody wants to see you have to change your nickname to GingerIM... and, well, GingerPatzer just doesn't have the same cachet (even if it is funnier).

This was a really good video. I would have loved to have heard a grandmaster speak his thoughts after a game in this way when I was young. The closest thing to this, I think, was the BBC chess series "The Master Game" in the late 1970s / early 80s, but the grandmasters in that series didn't explain their plans and objectives in anything like the detail that Simon does in his present day videos. Well done, Simon!

Many of the buildings are chess pieces. French and Dutch flags, for the openings. The dragon, similarly. "Buy DVD" advert. Gravestone for Harry. A pipe into which things could be put and smoked. Think those were the only ones I spotted on a quick watch.

Mr Simon Williams and Mr Akobian Varuzhan are my teachers. I learnt a lot from them. Who cares if Mr Williams' rating drops to even 1500? (Obviously Mr Finegold does) He's still an amazing teacher and player. I believe that Mr Williams just doesn't take his matches seriously+ he played against Stockfish many times. My best wishes for you, sir. Go get them, tiger!

After 11. ... Na4 12. Nxa4 bxa4 13.a3 white has no problem to defend the position if he wants,he can trade pieces with Bc5 whenever he wants and maybe try to go to a superior ending, he can start an attack with pawns ,... I simply don't see how black can make threats or any problems to white who has a pretty easy attack, with 11...Nd7 the game is still interesting it seems. My two cents

Simon, I appreciate the video but your claims about what "the computer" says aren't well-explained and I've seen this in your London DVD too (off-hand references to supposed computer evaluations which don't make any sense and can't be reproduced using any modern engine). At 27:30, you said that your software has a "different assessment system" (please specify the setup) and gave it a -.80 evaluation. Normally that means Black is up nearly a pawn but you said the computer favored White so I'll take it to mean +.80. I'm not getting anywhere near that ballpark even at low depth on older engines such as Hiarcs 14. In fact, Hiarcs, Komodo, and Stockfish all clearly suggest Na4 for Black so if you're trying to claim that this is a move engines dislike, it's not true. If there is an engine which gives the evaluation you mentioned, it's certainly not a credible one (especially with that extreme of a discrepancy). Plus, why would a GM choose to use a terrible engine when Stockfish is free and among the best? I want to give you the benefit of the doubt but my patience is wearing thin as I see these sorts of claims repeated in different contexts. If you're not sure about what the engine evaluation was, just say so or don't mention it. It looks like you're trying to claim originality or superior analysis over the computer through fraudulent means (misrepresenting engine evaluations). Considering that you portray yourself as an upfront and honest person, this is disappointing. Again, I hope this isn't intentional but only so much can be excused as accidental.

That has nothing whatsoever to do with the point nor was there any argument to the contrary. I simply want honesty.
@Pawnlust
@Pawnlust 7 жыл бұрын
Are you actually lashing out at someone for discouraging potential deceit? While I could have anticipated many different responses, criticism of honesty as an ethical value isn't something I seriously considered. Imagine if everyone had that mindset. Is that the kind of world you want to encourage? I like Simon's content as much as anyone else but that doesn't mean he gets a free pass for everything. A pattern of odd claims about engine output is especially problematic when he takes the role of an instructor. I have no issue with him having wildly different evaluations than what an engine gives. We are playing vs humans after all. However, it's not OK to claim an engine evaluates a position or move in a way that isn't true. Hopefully, there's an explanation. If it was all unintentional, he should certainly be aware of the problem now.

Pawnlust the computer eventually agreed with him it took a few seconds. It went down to -.47 from +.27
@ch2263
@ch2263 7 жыл бұрын
Why would he try to deceive you about things like that? There are plenty of other engines, Komodo 8 gives +0.6 to Na4 and recommends Nd7. Not sure which one he uses but it really doesn't matter.
