This mini series has me wanting to go to Hobby lobby. 😊 It's actually been a little while since I've put a model together. And I can easily acquire myself a model kit and even a substantial amount of paints, glues, brushes, exacto blades etc.... The difficult part will be convincing everyone to leave me the hell alone while I go into my own little 1:25 scale world. 😁

I think like that too but then you want other pieces from other model kits I.e better looking wheels, engine, etc.etc so you'd need to already have a big box of old model parts stuffed away somewhere or you'll be buying other models you'll need the paints and glue super glue with a sprinkle of baking soda best way to keep them together for ever again what's going to happen to all these models that people build can't take it with you

Mags as you are very well respected in the automotive world I.e the king of automotive trivia model maker extraordinaire you should try to partner with some model clubs and start a model museum and magazine library you can put your models somewhere and others can enter their models for consideration with a fee of course and for as long as the model is on the premises they have to pay a yearly fee most will just donate theirs j know my 73 cuda is one of a kind

The good old days when kids could go down to the 5 and 10 or the western auto and see what model kits were new on the shelf, kids in the neighborhood would build, and a club in late middle school…I had a pretty nice setup in the corner of the basement that I spent hours building, customizing, and learning at the same time the mechanics of vehicles…that was 50 years ago….wow…nice to have Steve keeping the hobby in the forefront on the tube!

I use to use regular automotive paint to paint my models. It was great because you could buff them out to a nice shine and then use testers paint to do the chrome silver trim. That was my best which is no where close to Steve's ability and skill level. I also can't believe my father let me do that all in the cellar with open flame of the water heater nearby. LOL

I use to hand those catalogs out for Oscar at the Giants Despair Hillclimb! Highlight of my life when I was a kid! Lived 500 yds from the starting line! Oscar was a great man!

That's COOL! I only knew Auto World from the twice-yearly catalogs at my local news stand and from a few mail order experiences. I remember being about 10 or 11 and getting all worked up every day after school to see if the mail man delivered my models! And this was the DAY AFTER I mailed in the order with Mom's check! It was a long "2 to 4 weeks" between the start and when that glorious brown box arrived at the post office "over size window". It was BLISS to open them and revel (Revell?) in the kits found within! Funny you should point out the spinning platform. That video is actually SPEEDED UP about 20-percent because the turn table was kinda slow - even at full speed. That turn table by the way, was a left over from the week that Motor Trend sent a crew to my house to shoot the four episodes of Steve Magnante's Super Models! The turn table was left behind as was a huge telescoping electric (up and down over a foot) work table. They didn't need these items back in L.A. (3,200 miles from my house in Massachusetts) so they let me keep them. I never thought I'd have a use for the turn table and put it away. Then I remembered I had it just before we shot these Altered Wheelbase model videos and Super Shane got it running (it has a remote controller....I'm too old to figure out the many buttons) But still, it rotated just a bit too slowly and so we speeded it up in the video play back. I am about a year or two older than Steve. I remember building some of those same models. Dad owned an automatic transmission shop back then, and that's what started it for me. I still remember my first match box car was a 66 Olds 442. Wow, I would love to go back 50 years. Just to see everyone sitting around Grandma and Grandpa's kitchen table again.

The first model I built was a 65 Chevelle(funny car)altered wheel base in 1967 I was 7 years old , I still build them today only much better looking then back then.

Steve I hang on every word you say about cars because I don't think I know anyone that knows more about cars than you . I'm older than you but its a coincidence that this episode you brought back so many memories of my days. My very first model car was "Color me Gone", I had slot cars and would race them with my cousins at a track in Arcadia Calif. I went to all the big Dragstrips , Lions, Irwindale (I could hear the cars race from my house!), and Orange Co. Raceway. I built every "Gasser" model you can think of I owned a'70 Monte Carlo and I gave my "Nephew -in-law" a very nice '62 Dodge Dart 440 w| 225 slant six w/78,000 orig. miles. 4dr. You are doing to yours what I would love to have done to mine. I cant wait to see it doing a nasty burnout Steve! From an old car guy, Thank you for ALL you do Steve.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I am very happy that you're still into models. It has rekindled my passion to start building them again for the first time in decades. Now I'm doing them with my eight-year-old son just like I did with my dad back in the 80s. We just finished the AMT 1972 GMC Jimmy. I painted it in a beautiful light green metal flake. Similar to a color on a box, but just has a little more pop. Painted the door panels and carpet in the same color but did the seats a darker green similar to an actual color combination from GM I found while digging around the internet. We have so much fun doing them and I have you to thank. Keep up the great work Steve, and don't worry about the Motor Trend thing, I think the shows better on your own anyways. You could do whatever you want, your style

Thanks for the Kind Words. The way Junkyard Crawl ended was a pisser! We concluded season 3 to strong reviews. They even flew some MT executives to the Alabama junkyard we shot the final season 3 episode at for a "wrap party". It was hardly a sinking ship. We had consistent 4.5-out-of-5 ratings. Then Covid hit. Sure, everything went On Hold. But as Covid cooled off MT resumed production of many shows. I was told "soon" by many Decision Makers. NINE MONTHS PASSED and I finally called Number Two Banana at MT-On-Demand who said "Nobody called you? We're moving toward cable TV and think more highly produced shows are our future. Junkyard Gold was a little TOO TECHNICAL. It is over". Argh. I knew I had to kiss TV goodbye where's its "don't call us, we'll call you". I'm 58 and pretty much wasted a decade waiting for Decision Makers to see the merit of a junkyard treasure hunt show. Hello KZbin! Anyhoo, Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

I have purchased a couple of Auto World catalogs off eBay, so much fun to see all those pages of model car kits. And one issue I bought was from '74 and for the first time it included some 20" bicycle parts and I recall wanting the drag chute so badly for my Sting-Ray, lol. Nothing wrong with that rear Bendix brake and a childhood of skids on my bike, but imagine pedaling at top speed and pulling that rip cord. And that's what catalogs and magazines did for us, opened up a world of imagination. 🙂

A good idea for the weights would be tungsten fishing weights! Tungsten weighs more with less mass so it’s easier to place on models

Cool stuff. I used to drool over the Auto World catalog. Wouldn’t have know about Scranton, PA without it. When building a static model airplane, weight often has to be added in front to PREVENT wheelies in bombers and P-38s, etc.

Steve, I thought I was the only one who appreciated great box art. I helped my Dad build my first kit around 72-73. I love the box art for the AMT Pontiac Ventura. I would study that box! I replaced the “long gone” original with a sealed kit from a show. I’ve since opened it (I’m a builder, not so much a unbuilt collector) and built it, but the box lid is proudly displayed. Great models, love your work. I recently finished the Mobeius altered Belvedere and a companion A990. Happy modeling!

love the model car crawl Steve, been awhile... the 1970 monte Carlo by AMT was also my first car model kit, it was wonderful experience I never really forgot. I was really pleased when Round 2 Announced and recently released an AMT model of the 2021 Dodge charger R/T, been waiting awhile for that one, great new kit.

Other models people forget about are the ones the dealership will give you if you ask them . I still have the model 62 Falcon station wagon my grandmother got when she bought her new wagon back then . In 06 I bought a new P T Cruiser and asked for it in model scale and they gave me one in metal . I have several more from friends new purchases and several that you can buy in stores . My favorite is the 59 Chevy Impala rag top . Gal pal complains and says my house looks like a kids room . I also collect new car window stickers . When buying used cars I like to get the original window sticker with it . And people will give them to you just for asking even if they don't have the car anymore . I have boxes of them and like to read them and compare . I remember one time I asked you to include the new vehicle price in the video . Makes it exciting for me . Well , thanks for all you do Steve ! You Tube really needed a channel like yours . Your making a lot of people happy .

I've just retired and started building again and your knowledge and workmanship needs to be heard and seen I know the real car and truck scene is big but small scale is getting there. Thank you for the useful information you put out, not mindless BS that some shows do both big and small scale.

Hi Mark Casto, thanks for watching and writing. The problem with a channel devoted to model cars is that I only have Super Shane the Cameraman one day a week. And frankly, the Junkyard Crawl is more fun to me. Also, a proper You Tube channel on model cars would have to be able to show minute details - like the dials on a dash board - really clearly. Trouble there is it takes a very special lens that looks kinda like a magic marker to get in there real close. Those lenses are pricey and the model must be held absolutely still in a fixture when shooting in micro. A lot of barriers to entry. But I probably will do more model car videos from time to time. But don't forget, I often include model kits in the Junkyard Crawl videos as "visual aids" to make certain points. Thanks again for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

I used to build model cars up till I turned 30. When kits started costing $20+ I gave it up. It was just a hobby for me. I was a member of the Midnight Model Builder club in Stafford VA. Had a lot of fun building. Won a few shows I attended. But when the cost of doing it started costing me as much as a weekend at the dragstrip. I went to the track instead.

Yeah Steve, I was 8 years old myself when I started building models in 1970. My very first experience was helping my buddy across the street with his model the 'Cement Mix'r', I'm sure you recall that one. Yes, that was an AMT kit right? I know Revell also did a cement mixer themed 1/25 scale model based on a VW chassis called the Moon Mixer around 1970. The idea was to tap into the frenzy surrounding the NASA Moon mission and model cars! I think the box art showed the Moon Mixer on the Moon with two astronauts working with it. Cosmic Man! Awesome video series on the model kits and hobby! I have seen replica of your car with the Model King 1965 nova kit. Those Mobius kits are truly works of art! I used both of their nova kits to build a replica of my first nova, a 65 post car with an inline 6. Iam still hoping that Mobius releases a stock 1965 nova ss kit to do a replica of another one that I own. Speaking of, 1965 nova...the original AMT box art is a trip! It's advertised as a chevy 2, but builds as an ss car. And the AMT 1962-1964 kits have separate engines yet the 1965 kit has that promo style engine plate. And..interesting to note that the 1962 nova kit has a 5 lug bolt pattern on their steel wheels..yet they were 4 lug wheels on the 1/1 car. Also that twin engine chevelle is the definition of total badass! 👍👍

You share the Keen Eye of a historian! Yes, there have been / continue to be many "bloopers" in the model kit world. On my "North Wind II" Chevy II post match racer model, the Moebius '65 Sedan kit depicts a 1965. But I discovered that the 1964 grille and tail light panels are an easy swap to get a '63 / '64-ish effect from the '65 model. The Round 2 AMT rereleases of the Nova / Chevy II wagon are interesting restorations of older tooling. Some times the original was a simplified "Craftsman series" cheapo-kit with no engine and a one-piece oil pan plate to fill the hole. As modelers we know that the AMT '66 Nova SS chassis and inner fenders can easily be merged into the '63 wagon to get a Dyno Don Nicholson 327 Fuelie B/FX wagon replica! It won't be a '62 like Dyno's actual car, but its pretty close. Thanks for watching and writing. -Steve Magnante

@Long Island Mopars Hi No, I don't think Steve mentioned the reason why, but I can only imagine it's because of time. I can relate myself in my younger days it was because of money and a place to blow one apart and let it sit while working on it. I had to drive my restorations. Now, in my older adult self, it's time. I travel a lot following leads on cars and also following music festivals etc. Steve's place looks like it has plenty of room in back of his garage to store a few while being built. Maybe it's money, but I doubt it, but who knows, some of us spend it all on cocaine and hookers others build altered wheel base model cars....🤣 I'm more of the latter one, that and pit tickets to concerts and shows. Lodging ain't cheap, either. I don't have any social media accounts, so I'm missing out on his Instagram page. Not that I'm computer illiterate. I just choose not to be on something that eats up time or "time burglar" some may say. I know a lot of people in the comment section do ask about the Dart. I'm almost positive Steve reads the majority of them. Someone here in the comment section might know why, the GOAT himself, Mr. GoogleGP 🏆. Steve I've always said that the box art was the best part of the model. Don't know why the brain responds so well to it, but when there's photos on the side of the box, it's a letdown. The artwork somehow makes your imagination run wild. It's interesting that Pontiac continued to use artwork in their dealership brochures until the early '70's. It made the cars look so cool! I used to DVR every episode of Junkyard Gold (CANCELLED?!!!!) and I check out your YT channel every day. This is great stuff!

There's nothing like having your own work featured like that. Kudos to you. I see my work everyday in the street going about their mission. From when I envision them on paper to when they hit the road, that's a satisfying feeling. Some of the vehicles I'm involved in do eventually get made in to models as well. Prior to that, I would see some of the sales aids, catalogs and bulletins I created in parts stores that I went to. That was also a satisfying feeling.

Hello Google User GP, I don't know what your profession is but you seem to be An Insider to the auto / truck industry. I'm definitely an "outsider looking in" and whenever I meet Detroit Insiders (mostly Mustang, Corvette and Dodge Viper / Hellcat / Demon engineers) I urge them to WRITE A BOOK some day or at least keep records "for the record". I believe ANY aspect of the automotive industry has fascinating stories / angles that "outsiders" would find fascinating (like how the Demon design team kept a 1968 Hemi Dart hood on the design center wall for inspiration!). Or how SRT design chief Mark Trostle is an AVID model car builder (Trostle was the guy behind the Viper GTS' yearly body updates when it was in production as well as much current Dodge work). No doubt you see things that would be of great interest. Why not share these things with "outsiders"? I know we sometimes have to wait until we're at a little bit of a distance (retired, a few years after the fact, etc.) before we can innocently relate details. Naturally we're not looking to slander or embarrass anyone, just giving interesting inanimate objects a voice for folks who would enjoy the stories. Anyhoo, I'm sure you may have already considered / planned this. For some inspiration, maybe check out Phillip Borris' books "Echoes of Norwood" and "Visions of Norwood". Both are EXCELLENT reveals of life at GM's famous / infamous Norwood, Ohio assembly plant from the beginning to the bloody end. @@SteveMagnante I worked for an aftermarket parts manufacturer who was also later on an OEM supplier. I did new product introductions, cataloging, marketing, pricing, and everything else needed to make that part available in the company's line. One time I went into a parts store and the owner said to a customer on the phone, "Yea, it shows a number in the catalog, but it's not coming up as valid". That's when I said to the owner, "Yea, that's because the part is in the catalog, but there's no source for it yet. It was a preassigned number in the catalog". Shocked, the owner asked me, "How would you know that?" I said, "Because you're talking to the guy that introduced that part and cataloged it". I can guarantee that you've (and others here) probably touched parts that myself and others I worked with handled at one time. I met some interesting people, including the guy with the Dodge Magnum that I related the story about a few times. Some people in my "parts past" would reappear in my current job and actually say, "I know you from somewhere", and they would be right. We crossed paths in the past. Maybe one day I'd write a book, but nah, it wouldn't be that interesting. LOL. I'd rather be a guest on a You Tube channel such as yours, or others that I follow and comment on (G Money Auto Crushing, Classic Ride Society, Monster Rust, and others). I think that would be a lot more enjoyable. As to my current profession, I'm on the fleet side of the business. One day maybe I'll tell some more. One of my friends sometimes comments here and he knows what I do. I can tell you this: the vehicles are big, they do important missions and they are costly. LOL.

Love all these Steve, I’m as into building models as I am the real cars. Subscribed to the Motor Trend channel just for the Supermodels show so was really disappointed when it was killed off a few weeks later. With most of the model car magazines gone there is a market for model car videos. Please keep ‘em coming and not just when there’s snow outside. 😉

Very cool ! All my model stuff has been boxed up for some time now as i look for a place to move, but once im settled im going to get back into it. As a kid two of my most detailed models were the mongoose and snake funny cars which are now long gone but i do have a pic of my display cabinet along with many ww2 aircraft which i also hung from the ceiling of my room... those were fun times !!

I used to be modelier for a few years until the age of 11 or 12. I began to hodge podge parts together. One of the last ones I made was a 56 Chevy Gasser with a straight axle front end with slick's in the back.

You've created a monster here...keep this segment going. At the age of 8 or 9 I received a package in the mail- for any kid that in itself a thrill. Turns out a distant aunt had sent Aurora's 34 Ford kit. The kit offered not one- but TWO complete coupes. The box's dimensions resembled a board game, only a bit thicker, plus "widely" deviating from the standard size model car kits of the period. Being the acute "automotive observationalist" I am, the art work ranks as one of the TOP TEN renderings of all time. In obvious Norman Rockwell fashion, the stock coupe is at the pumps of a small town garage, just off the dusty roadway. Just behind the folding wooden doorway, the hot rod version is perched high on the lube rack. Amazing depiction of adolescent gearheadery. I believe it was Monogram that used the same box format in a 55 Chevy drop top kit. Although unique, the novel packaging size never took off. For what they offered those little Pyro kits had some great detail to them. What aging Testor's head can forget The Big Deuce and all those"Koooky" T buckets in their huge 1/16th formation? Revell's Visable V8....talk about desktop shop class. Yeah. it's reached the point where am collecting even the empty boxes. Don't forget the slot car kits, where actual body shells from kits were part of the assembly package. As far as pulp, right up there along side of the Auto Wold Annual there was Model Car Science Magazine. While I forget the exact title, Scale Model Car Enthusiast, same topic, only notched up utilizing their "Yates styled" journalism. Even Rod & Custom Magazine took a departure from their standard content, devoting many a page to model cars, if only for a brief time. And all those official programs from the World of Wheels Kustom AutoRamas that toured the country. Color wheels and angel hair. Turn tables and chromed brake drums revealed. All those colorful fold out Nascar track brochures as well as their much smaller "dust bowl" counter parts. Not casting aside the dozens upon dozens of auto themed movie posters. The infamous cult-ish "Thunder Road," and "To Please a Lady." with Gable and Stanwick, the cheesy "Hot Rods to Hell." yet retaining sort of a tolerable script. Such augmented miniatures of the automotive lure..and all of THAT art work ...priceless! OK OK>>> one more element and I'll back off. Comic Books. There was this very tiny corner drug store with an actual phone booth out front. The place even had a small soda fountain. Kind of dark and only a few isles,, the pressed tin cealing..all of it. The wire frame comic book rack whose faint squeal would break the silence. It'd wobble in rotation like a loose timing chain but somehow never faulted. One would have to dog ear under the more common artistic depictions of super heroes, combat scenes, tv themed characters and the like. But..there they were..Teenaged Hotrodders and another, Hot Rods and Racing Cars. Their run was from the early 50s well through the 60s. Talk about kiddie style auto art They kicked ass and covered every single car related theme imaginable from slot cars and Soap box derbies to Leman's to Top Fuel.... Great stuff. Ahh... all thru the pages of time and one incurable life long addiction. The automobile.

I grew up in the Rat Fink era and wore a Rat Fink t-shirt to school not knowing it was picture day. My Mom was terrified until she saw the picture and I had a nice blue sweater on. Note- The Hamilton Collection has a Rat Fink Blown 1932 Ford die cast model with a Rat Fink decal for only $225 plus tax. Hmmm price increase?

I’m holding out hope that Moebius tools a 1963 - 1966 Dodge Dart. It seems within their wheelhouse to me. If they do a ‘66 GT, Group 44 decals would be the best cherry on top; Bob Tullius’ Trans-Am winner.

Of course, that would mean Super Shane would have to spend a ton of time at Steve’s house, which might be logistically challenging giving the time frame of one of these builds?
