GM LT vs LS Engines

A look at two great GM V8 engines, IMO you can't go wrong with either.
What it comes down to is your budget and need. The LT engines with Direct Injection, CVVT and the 8 speed transmission will be the engine to beat in the near future; the LS still performs well and offers lower cost.

6:30 My 96 4x4 Tahoe with the old school Vortec 5.7 had 270k miles and was burning a lot of gas. Mpg had dropped from 14.5 mix driving to 12 mpg. I was reading online about an old timing chain could cause an old engine to burn gas. This made sense because my engine was a little raw at low speed but would run like a boss at higher rpm. When I change the timing chain. I had to advance the cam slightly to install the gear. The engine ran smoother at low rpm and the 14.5 mpg came back after the second fill up. This is when I realized how much vvt matter.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 5 жыл бұрын
VVT is why DOHC engines suck when it comes to reliability. The VVT solenoids and cam phasers are the last to get oil, get the weakest oil pressure, and are the first to form sludge deposits. That's why Ford has struggled with DOHC V6 and V8 reliability for decades. Even Toyota has struggled with VVT reliability in high output V8's. The VVT system on a pushrod V8 is very close to the oil pump by comparison. Hence why pushrod engines don't have the major problems DOHC engines have.
@blackericdenice
@blackericdenice 5 жыл бұрын
@@hochhaul Wrong. vvt is the reason Ford DOHC 302 cuin v8 make 1.52 hp/cuin. If the OHV Corvette 6.2 aka 376 cuin v8 made 1.52 hp/cuin. It would make 571 hp. Wrong. Sludge come from people who don't change their oil and or let the engine run low on oil. Wrong. GM OHV engine oil pump sit on the front of the crankshaft just like Ford. GM do have problem with vvt it just to owner are stupid and ride around with the light on thinking they need an o2 sensor.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul 5 жыл бұрын
@@blackericdenice Sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about. Also, who cares how much HP per liter an engine makes. The GM v8 could be 10 liters and make the same HP. As long as it gets better fuel economy and is more compact than the 5.0 Coyote, I'm ok with that. Ps Ford's but and solenoids are the last in line to get oil and are at the top of the engine. The LS and Gen V GM v8's have a VVT system but it's down low and simpler in design. Sinple is good especially when you're offroad.
@blackericdenice
@blackericdenice 5 жыл бұрын
@@hochhaul When ever someone tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about. They are not old enough to drive. People don't buy V8 Mustangs looking for mpg. That more compact bs is what GM say to their customers to take their mind off the fact that. A much smaller engine is making as much hp as their larger old design engine. Just like GM has a turbo engine in their full size truck. They always end up doing what Ford has already done.

I had a LT1 and 4L60E out of an interceptor Caprice that I got slightly deeper into than planned. After reworking the engine and completely upgrading the trans and pumpkin, It would leave 6 inch stripes going into gear, and still roast tires if the pedal was dropped going 60. Only down-side was the local law noticed, and it got expensive, extremely quickly.

@WranglerJKLS
@WranglerJKLS 5 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of variables when it comes to mpg, weight, altitude, drag.... but my usual answer is whatever your getting with the V6 you should get 1-3 mpg better with the V8. The V8 having more cubic inches is less stressed and works less, especially in a heavy JK. We see more dramatic gains in heavy JK's with 40's because the V8 can stay closed loop running off the O2's turning lower rpm's where a V6 would rev up and go into performance enrichment. With some alcohol in our gas the stoich point is about 14.2:1 where open loop is closer to 12:1 AFR.

It's as if GM's small block engineers design their engines with the understanding that they aren't just designing an engine for a GM vehicle, they're designing an engine that will eventually end up in dozens of other non-GM vehicles. Changes between generations are small enough to not break compatibility completely. No segmented aftermarket where you need to know which plant the engine was assembled in, the date it was assembled on, the guy that put it together, etc (I'm looking at you Ford). These engine are like Lego blocks. You build whatever you need or can afford.

@WranglerJKLS
@WranglerJKLS 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on your inspection process, what jurisdiction are you in? We follow USEPA engine change guidelines and are working with the BAR and CARB in California for 50 state compliance. The powertrain(including transmission) run GM modules, operating systems and calibrations as required by the USEPA. The vehicle can be diagnosed like the GM donor vehicle using GM tools and software. There is no hybriding or hacking of the OS like with some swaps. The powertrain runs a GM engine and transmission not a Chrysler transmission and the harnesses are GM not hand built hot rod type. We maintain the redundancy and failure modes of the donor powertrain.

Perfect, and direct explaining. Question please: What is the better oil for LT1 engine (2018 SS Camaro). 5w30 or 0w40 in your opinion ?

I think that would be dependent, outside temperature, mileage, use(track vs street...)

Bob Quattrini Your opinion is in the minority. I don't own a vehicle with either the LS or LT engines. But from those I know that have them, they keep running just fine despite hard use. The only person I know who had trouble frequently revved his at 5500+ RPM for prolonged periods when towing a 10,000 pound trailer up several thousand feet elevation gains. The towing wasn't the problem. But his insistence on maintaining 65 to 70 mph while climbing was. This forced the transmission to downshift a couple of gears to bring the engine to max RPM and max horsepower. Eventually, one of his lifters failed. After the lifter was replaced, it has run fine for 2 years now.

Let the dealer change that out. They use synthetic and it's still covered under the agreement. I bealive you get 4 changes a year don't forget.

I'm looking to get an 09 or so 2500 . I've noticed alot of the v8 that have DOD end up with a failed lifter. Is that I only on certain motors? I'm using it for towing and hauling.

Forgot the 5.3L 327 and 4.8L 283 brought them back for there geometry has less friction on cylinder walls and crank ,that equals higher rpm with less vibration.

I see there is clearance for the PSC steering box but will a PSC XD or XDII box fit?
@WranglerJKLS

It depends, XD1 or XD2? Camaro or truck drive. In general the XD box's are tight but we have done it. If your running a ram we recommend using the standard ported PSC box.
