Other than the bell housing and the words GM and Chevrolet stamped on the exterior parts, what makes this a GM? And what is R07?

this should be a T07 as it is a twin to the nascar Toyota engine I'll bet some if not all the parts enter change.once nascar get ford to fallow along all the engines will be based of the Toyota design.

Its a copy of the Cleveland engine. The bore spacing is Ford. The head layout is Ford and the distributor location is Ford. The centered thrust bearing location is Ford and the firing order is Ford. The LS engine is also 100% all Ford designs. Today's Prostock engines you see under the hoods of Chevy's are all Ford spec big blocks. They have nothing to do with the BBC.

reliable yes, simple kinda and lightweight depends on what you make the thing out of. the Holden 253 smallblock is often referred to as a 'boat anchor' because it's heavy, slow and unreliable. anything German can beat that PARTICULAR engine.
