SG isn't the first. Netflix started investing in Asian content for many years now and its paying off. Kdramas are popular globally even before Squid Game. SG's success is paved by other kdramas such as Kingdom, and the most recent hit Vincenzo. But because SG is so compelling, people who has watched start talking about it and getting others to watch it.

He's right, subtitles is easily better than the dubbed version, not because dubbed versions are necessarily bad. However, in this show, the dubbed voice acting is quite jarring and breaks the immersion.

The sub is horrendous to be honest. So many subtleties of Korean culture are lost. They literally translated 오빠 / Oppa as "old man" pffff like (Oppa) Gangnam style is almost 10 years ago... Even non Korean speakers (should) know that it doesn't mean Old man... That said, i don't even want to imagine how they butchered everything in dubbed English
@Hy-BridAbroad
@Hy-BridAbroad 2 жыл бұрын
@@lalainaramarivelo Did they translate oppa as old man? I don't remember that. I remember them translating it to "babe" once and maybe ignoring it other times. Also, what would you have translated oppa to since you think the subs are so bad? When you are translating a show, all subtleties can't be translated across languages. How do you explain that oppa literally means older brother but is often used by girls towards any close older male friend even if they are related? You can't just insert explainers. The average western audience 100% DOES NOT have any clue what oppa means if you don't normally follow K-pop or K-Dramas.

3:07 Yes, the director graduated from USC with MFA in film production. But he got his undergraduate degree from Seoul National University, the 1st ranked college in S. Korea, like Sangwoo in Squid Game. He majored in communication there. He also has some resemblance to Gihoon. He was also brought up by a single mom, lived off her in his late 30s when he went bankrupt. Many of his other films are dealing with very sensational topics with lots of criticism, often to the degree that some production companies were afraid of working with him. But his box office score had been quite good even before Squid Game. His reserved but very realistic depiction of matters sheds new light on hidden problems in our society. And the subjects are not limited to the class divide or economic problems. For example, his movie "Doghani", "Silenced" in English title, whistleblew the sexual abuse committed by a schoolmaster at a school for the disabled. Because of that movie, S. Korea even made a bill, a.k.a. "Doghani law" that specifies the punishment against sex crimes done to the disabled. (Btw, I'm S. Korean. :D )

It's more like Gee-Hoon. Just like the last name Kim is really Gim. Most of American spelling/pronunciation for Korean names are wrong due to it being based on Chinese pronunciation. Like Korean names Yi being converted to Lee, Bok being converted to Park, and Jo being converted to Cho.

I find it kind of hilarious that the entire world is only now finding out just how good South Korean television and film is. I've been watching various series and films born there since 2015, and I began my journey with a little series called "Oh! My Ghost". Since then my que has been flooded with hundreds of films and series from South Korea and many other foreign countries. Rarely do I add anything from my own country to my que, as it seems to me, that mine own countries artists rarely put out anything new and fresh, and it is often stale remakes of popular older film and television, the comic book craze, or something they stole from another country. It seems like a lot of the South Korean shows and series follow a certain recipe, and it takes some time to crack the code, but if something works, well, you just go with it. FYI : never watch a foreign language film, television show, or series dubbed into a language that you can understand. Move past your fears and annoyances of having to read the subtitles, because there is always a lot of information that is lost in translation, plus, you may learn something new. This is only one good show of countless many. Start your own journey to the far corners of the Earth. Enjoy!
