She hit the nail on the head! Ox tails, neck bones, ham hocks and turkey necks are extremely expensive now. These meats were sold for pennies when I was a kid. And I'm quite sure these were the unwanted peices of meats that were given to American slaves. We made these scraps work and turned them into a delicious dish and now they're $10.00 a pound. I still have price shock everytime I go to the market

Bonding over food my mother cooked is my top childhood memory. She was from Louisiana and had 13 younger siblings. She always cooked more than enough for the meal. She was the reason I loved vegetables at a very young age. In high school my friends loved to be invited to dinner. Kelis reminds me that my mother cooked from her heart and that’s why her food was so delicious. Rip Momma, I miss you a lot❤️

I think it's a damn shame that oxtails have become somewhat of a delicatessen. Like Kelis said, it's something the wealthy would throw away, but black folks perfected and made them flavorful. It's a shame something that was thrown away, something poor folks found useful for consumption has become soooooo ef'n unaffordable now. Oxtails usually have a generous amount of meat on them, as well as sometimes larger bones. Because of their weight, and folks who could give two f@cks about eating them then, now desire them. Many people now can't afford them and/or like myself, refuse to pay the asking price per pound for them. Same applies to chicken wings, short ribs, and pot roast. Bougie folks would never be caught consuming such things. Now, the desire for these foods are making them overpriced. My, how quickly foods that were common for poor folks to eat have become outrageously over priced. It's a pity. The amount of money generated from the sale of these foods by those who have seen the opportunity for exploitation is just sinful. SMGDH!

Damn when I was a kid (back in the 50’s-60) chicken was expensive so we had oxtails and short ribs, neck bones and other cheap cuts of meat and a hell of a lot of green, grits, beans, turnips, corn potatoes, okra peas and chicken once in a while, fried, or as chicken and dumplings were a special dish on special days, like Sunday, or a picnic. First off .... everyone Black from South Carolina is NOT Gullah Geechee. Just cuz I eat bagels and whitefish if I live ina Jewish area or was exposed to that food culture doesn't make me Jewish. Anyone could watch high on the hog and be a sudden expert 🙄! Let the Gullah speak vfor themselves by giving THEM this platform and respect the culture enough to not even wanna take it from them when they are available!!!! Kelis is NOT Gullah Geechee and this platform could have gone to one who is actually fully a Black Descendant of American slavery. But straight up American Blackness with 4c kinky energy and wide broad noses and lips --- that's never as palatable I guess🤷🙄! That's just facts. Also being partial Black American, or just Black American period does not make you a Gullah spokesperson or Gullah. It's just funny show now that all this specific attention is being put on Gullah Geechee culture People wanna jump on this bandwagon. In the north growing up being called Geechee was an insult. They even speak on it in movie A Soilders Story 'the day of the Geechee is over'. The stigma. Black Americans have an issue with trying to make themselves an other....an exotical. So all these years all we heard from her ... even about her chef career is the exoticism of her Puerto Rican side and Chinese side. That she's not a ' regular black'. Now .....that Black Americans descendants of slaves are speaking up and demanding respect be put on their names.....all of a sudden it's black this and black that.🙄🙄🙄. Timely branding 🙄. If they cut a check to descendants of American slaves all of a sudden everyone will be one.

It's really disturbing how black people want to discredit and dishonor the blackness of other black people. Black people are indigenous to this planet. We come from Everywhere, which is wonderful. I know that there are gatekeepers who want to stave off the Rachel Dolezals of the world, but they take it too far.

Working with many Afro Latinos has taught me how much they differentiate themselves from African Americans so we can't afford to play around with legacy of people who were so strong they stood up to this system and signed their last will and testaments before going on freedom rides and marching over slave built D.C. where ancestors were interred in concentration camps after slavery. I am half ADOS and Half Bahamian which sounds EXACTLY like Gullah Geechee and I acknowledge the differences and it matters. I am forever thankful to the Black American civil rights workers who GAVE THEIR LIVES. I invite you to work extensively with Afro Latinos and come back and tell me the same nonsense about why people differentiate between the groups. Black born Americans are Black when its inconvenient to be among racist colorist Latinos on the workplace and being reminded that resentful opportunistic slick people people don't have the nerve to call out Spain like our ancestors did with Britain and the the horror of America. I have never met a Latino who is absolutely inherently disgusted with Spain. When I mention this to them in conversations with it I get crickets. Everyone quiet and it was always with Black Latinas expressing resentment at Black Americans always speaking about their situatiin here. Then I have to explain to them the details for them to understand. Black Americans, protect your legacy. Black American women of ADOS descent, protect your legacy as you are the MOST hated. I would actually suggest you learn about Latinas and AFRO Latinas and their language in depth and help them start an Afro Latino liberation movement in their origin countries because I see what they're up to here and I will call it out each time. The same South Carolina that gives you Gullah Geechee and that sty,e of cooking will have others from the state that only cook Carolina White rice in upstate SC especially after some families fled the coastal areas and went upstate. Why they would shed their Gullah ways and that cooking tradition but I acknowledge their experience in that state was a terrifying one and none of it was wrapped up in anything Puerto Rican. Just wanted to add that I was a Harlem baby too and despite the Arthur Shomburg contribution Afro Latinos living in Slave built NY see themselves seperate from ADOS even when intermarried. Respect the differences and explore them but on the ground in the real world as a Black woman dealing with the multitudes of Latinos has been eye opening experience and has shown me to appreciate the Black born Americans who literally lost their lives for freedom HERE. Their sacrifice is sneered at and muttered about in Spanish in my NY and disregarded by far too many. Too many want to connect with the Gullahs while dismissing the other southern groups that don't cook this way. As I come from both cultures, I see the backhanded dis and I call it out.

@Ibibo Ibiene first off ....she didn't make rice and beans so yeah um 🙄🙄🙄🙄. Red rice is not rice and beans. And as we were sold into American slavery by Africans for material gain by them.....we can call ourselves whatever we feel like calling ourselves. But what we are...those of us that are that is....are American descendants of slaves. We have our own unique culture which is based off the circumstances of being an amalgamation of all the various African tribes we were sold from to white slave traders (let me repeat again....sold to white slave traders by fellow Africans not captured like in Roots the movie). So depending on where we were forced into chattel slavery after being sold by people who looked like us for material gain🙄, we were not formally trained in English and so created the combined language that would only happen if people who weren't naturally supposed to be forced together were forced to communicate in English with various African languages as their mother tongue. That created it's OWN unique culture, language and food. Using ingredients here which are not African ingredients, combined from various experiences HERE. Y'all narcissist think everything is an applause back to Africa. Well just like American descendants of slaves are owed reparations for what happened here, Africans who profited from selling us into slavery owe us too. So I'd be much quieter about popping loud about things you chose not to educate yourself about. Trust we'll come around to y'all for y'all part soon enough.
