They feel that they hv to reciprocate EQUALLY or exceedgly, but due to real economic limitations they feel whatever they give will not be enough , so they end up not sayg anythg. They evn hv a culture they call "utang ng loob"- feelg of indebtedness (for Life). Just like in this story, the girl desires even to take care of her sponsor when she gets old. They don't see that a simple "Thank You" is already appreciated. Plus , other forms of communication is difficult (poor snail mail netwk, Slow internet, no computer). Unless ur family, yes they feel entitled haha like most cultures though 😆

There is really something more special and heart-warming about the old ways such as penpals/snail mails or undigitalised romantic introductions. When I was a 4th yr HS student, I also had penpals whom I ironically met at ICQ chatroom during the nascency of the internet here in the Philippines ca. late 90s. They were from Ayutthaya (Thailand) and Queensland (Australia). I had the chance to meet them over a decade later or sometime in 2009 or when I finally had the means to. We continue to keep in touch to this day.
