It always blow my mind how much skill and confidence is needed in MTB compared to normal riding. I taught my roommate some basic things and it’s very eye opening as to how much you need to learn, and how much of it becomes second nature after a handful of rides. Pretty awesome stuff!

It is definitely important to learn how to be comfortable standing and pedalling as well as coasting with pedals level and turning the bike. Something you can learn while in a parking lot. The more comfortable you are standing the easier it will be to learn mountain biking.

Confidence is only increased with knowledge. Knowledge is only gained with experience. So do the thing. When confidence is increased, pick up the speed. More speed = more stability. With speed, line-choice is very important, keeping your eyes further ahead and not at your front tire.

Bike parks can be intimidating for beginners. I just took one of my nephews to the forest near me for his first time and got him to ride, no tempting (made just for MTBs) trails to put pressure on him to try something he's not ready for, that was in August last year, now he's having great fun and building up little by little to the more exciting stuff.

The Nukeproof seemed to be a size too large and it should have been set up prior to her using it, ie: bedding in the brakes to start. Nothing more distracting than screaming brakes at a noob trying to concentrate on what was taught/said. Plus she had her saddle dropped which wasn't helping with her pedaling efficiency.
@kaupo80 Жыл бұрын
One thing that newbies usually misunderstand is that speed is your friend (until it isn't). It is very difficult to balance the bike while (almost) standing still. A bit more speed and the bike keeps itself upright, you should only point it in the right direction.

You could tell that she geniunely doesn't ride a lot, at least not on a mountainbike, because she was quite shaky for a lot of the movements. Maybe not the best idea to put a lightweight beginner on a bike with 4-piston brakes😂 At least twice you could tell she was surprised by the braking power.

Anyone I teach a few skills to (so someday they too can be as mediocre as me,, and make equally mediocre videos)... I teach what I consider to be one of the most important things... that seems to be glossed over... before riding position etc... learn to TRUST THE FRONT BRAKE. So many times I see people being taught how to sit/stand, corner etc... and they are still dragging the back brake round corners etc as they don't trust the front brake.. I find a nice bit of flat, open gravel (secondary/private road or park usually has a perfect long patch. Get the rider to sit (as it's easiest for a noob to put a foot down when sat rather than standing.. and the hips are closer to the ground). Seat lowered so both feet are close to flat on the ground when sat (not a good track ride position... but that would be getting way ahead if the important things... not falling off just riding). Ride at their slowest comfortable speed on the flat gravel... JAM on the front brake and put which ever foot down that works, (At that speed they should be safe.. adjust your training to suit... Get them to do this until they are comfortable coming to a stop. Now get them to try and JAM the brake on, but release it immediately, and see if they can do that without putting a foot down, or at least with only the "Trail Riders Stomp" "Trail Riders Stomp" - {relating to motor cross trail bike riders, not horses or Tic Toc} is where a rider, at speed, usually in a corner, looses the front wheel grip, instinctively takes the low side foot off the peg, stomps their heel into the ground and puts it back on the peg, delaying the fall just long enough for the wheel to regain grip the other side of the slippery bit) (I taught a friend (Road racer) how to do this and in a classic New Zealand race "The Cemetery Circuit" he lost the front on a notorious railway track in a corner... without knowing what happened he kicked the ground and shot ahead into the pits... but upright (That track is actually fun to google even if it's to see people doing 100mph on a tight street circuit... round a cemetery.. Uhh I digress... Oh yes.... So once they can lock the front and recover, then its fun to see how far they can pedal with the front locked up, and if they can ride out of it when they loose the front without touching the ground. This all leads to an appreciation of just how good the front brake is... and how to trust it, and if it lets you down, how to feel when it's going, and feather that brake. (Next I teach a little about looking ahead where you want the wheel to go, not at the rock to the side that they will now hit... Brake BEFORE the corner, not in it... followed by looking ahead for the best place to brake if its a little roll, rather than rolling down so slowly that if the front wheel looses grip or stops, they have to put a foot down on a slope rather than a safe place.) If only someone had shown me how bad the rear brakes can make your riding.. (And on road motorbikes, they are actually more unsafe than good, to the point where some racers make them barely pass scrutineering and useless on the track just incase they make the mistake of using them in a race. (Notably top F3 rider in NZ circa mid 90's Tony McMurdo and his alloy rear rotor)

He didn't really focus in on her biggest issue, she doesn't carry speed but rather kills it a bit when she's going to need it. Once she figures that out and develops a little more confidence she'll be zipping right along.

I dunno, remember when we learnt to drive cars and the control on the clutch pedal was non-existent? Beginner drivers need to learn that, as do beginner riders with their brake levers - it just takes a bit of time to develop that fine motor skill in the fingers just as you do with your left foot in a car.

Perhaps some context to my comment is in order. At one point when she went into a turn she slipped about the same time Neil hit his train horn brakes. It looked like it scared her right off the bike. Just a joke. Loud brakes happen in the muck.

Teaching her to break fall may have been a good call, aka don't put hands down when you fall or a broken wrist may occur. Always forearms first to tell a beginner, can see she almost broke her wrist there tryijg to catcy herself. Could have mentioned brake before the corner and not on a corner as a basic beginner tip, and told her that the embankment of the corner will bring her round gently and easily. Didn't look like she went in with enough knowledge to be confident or very safe for her unfortunately. Otherwise great conversation and good attenpt at getting her on her mtb journey, I hope she is still riding to this day?

Love the bike design kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube.All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.

I learned the basics of MTB in Queenstown NZ. One of the first time I took my bike up on the gondola the two guys in the cabin with me had a more extreme version of that - in their view you've not really been trying at MTB until you've broken a bone. They then proceeded to tell me of all the bones they've broken. I decided that maybe I just wasn't going to be a good rider, at least in their eyes. Five years later I then smashed my right ankle (back in the UK). I can't say I feel I'm any better at riding afterwards!
@YaronYogev Жыл бұрын
I think bike park berms are a bit too much for absolute beginners. One should come in there with enough speed and confidence to be able to ride on the slope, as the gravely bottom can be very unsafe when riding slow and lacking the proper body position and technical finesse in general. It would be better to do a pumptrack session as preparation for this.

Chain Reaction/Nukeproof are GMBN sponsors, so the bike was a loaner. I was thinking they did her a disservice by giving her a bike one size too large to use and the brakes weren't even bedded in. Plus she had her dropper lowered while seated, which in turn doesn't help with her pedaling efficiency.
