What Are Tyre Inserts & Who Are They For? | Cushcore Wheel & Rim Protection For Mountain Bikers

Tyre inserts have become a popular accessory for mountain bikers in recent years, but what exactly do they do and what type of rider will benefit from them the most? We sent pretty much the whole crew to go and find out! With the whole Cushcore Range, we're heading to the hills to ride everything from XC to Enduro, and even Chris from EMBN joined on his E-bike!

Tyre inserts allow you to run less pressure in your tyres since you're replacing that air volume with a foam damping agent. This, in turn, makes the tyre feel more controlled when it deforms around terrain and corners and gives you maximum grip. Tyre inserts support your tyres in the corners decreasing 'tyre roll' which can make your bike feel odd in the corners and even if you corner hard enough, burp the bead off of the rim. The final main benefit of a tyre insert is to protect your rim and wheel from impacts that can happen when trail riding. There is a trade-off of adding more weight to your wheel, and in the event of ride ending tyre slice, having to remove an insert trail side can be difficult. I put Cushcore in my tires in preparation for a six day bike packing trip in southern Utah. See Aquarius trail. The terrain was crazy and the elevation at one point topped 11,000 feet. The total ride was 220 miles and 24k of climbing. I can honestly say these inserts were awesome for a lot of the super rocky downhill that we had to hit to get from one hut to the other from day today. With all the climbing we had to do, I didn't notice the minor weight gain the inserts came with. The sidewall protection and lower PSI was totally worth it. I highly recommend it.

I installed CC's about three years ago. I won't ride without them anymore. I think they were as transformative to riding as a dropper post. Yes, they are more stable in the berms, but I think they really excel in sharp/rocky chunk. You can hammer rock gardens with wreckless abandon. I weigh 63 kilos and I run 18 psi F and 23 psi R.

I tried cushcore a while back. Definitely reduces trail chatter but couldn’t get away from the added weight and somehow made the bike feel less agile and playful overall. No one mentioned the dreaded install! Happy to be back on a standard tubeless set up and run pretty much the same pressures.....

Broke a carbon wheel this weekend on my Ripmo. I had CushCore installed previously but I thought a heavier tire casing would protect me. Nope! I can't stand higher PSI because the ride feels rough so back to CushCore for a plush ride and extra protection!

I run Cushcore on both my XC and enduro bike. Definitely has benefits. Noticed on my XC bike that now with lower pressures I can lean more on turns, which before was a bit sketchy. What I havent had yet is a flat on Cushcore. While I've seen people complete a ride with just Cushcore, cant imagine trying to remove it to put a tube in.

I appreciate the benefits of tyre inserts, however I don't see how the braking test proves anything. Different riders, different bikes, and therefore different weights; (as well as different geo and suspension) different braking systems, different tyres. A very long bow to draw, to put the test results purely down to different tyre pressures giving more/less traction

I really believe tire inserts will only get better. They're just like elastic/bump-stop dampers, which are relatively easy to model. 5:35. Like you wisely stated, Phill, different frame geometry, tires, body position/weight allocation, etc. This test isn't very conclusive.

@@williamstryker6643 I'm running DoubleDown tyres on my eeb atm, so don't feel the need for inserts. But running inserts would allow me to run lighter tyres. I have Nukeproof ARD in my accoustic bike but there's probably much better options out there. As you say, the technology is improving and it will be interesting to see how products evolve

Prajwal Pingali depends what bike you’re on. On a plus size hardtail the rear tire pressure is everything. I run my trek Stache at 13-15 psi sometimes, would probably notice the difference in feel.

I feel like the biggest thing I've noticed isn't even mentioned. I just thought 29ers had vague and non precise steering until I tried cushcore. The sidewalk stability is huge and made my 29er come alive in handling. Never new I had issues with tire squirm, until I installed cushcores. Now I'm stuck with them, because I can't imagine riding without that precise steering.

I've gone with Tannus inserts with tubes. No more hassle with latex bunging up the valve, pump and tyre. No weight difference but so much easier.

A lot of the benefits of tire inserts mentioned in this video are quite specific to CushCore, such as supporting and dampening the sidewalls. People shouldn't expect to see all these benefits from a simple insert like a Huck Norris or similar.

Interesting - I don't run Foam Inserts but I have Bontranger Rim Strips which aid the Tubeless setup and also holding the bead of the tyre to the rim. 85kg kitted with water and I run 20F / 22-24R on 29 x 2.4 tyres. Not had any issues with this combo and carbon rims be it rowdy rock gardens (Finland is the home of those especially from where Pole comes from) to DH tracks in Aus. Interesting enough Nino runs sub 20psi on his XC bike with 2.4 tyres.

I'm back to using a tube with the Tannus armour insert on my rear wheel and it feels good. As a heavy rider (actual weight and clumsily battering into things!) I've had issues with pinch flats, burping and rim damage. Only got a couple of hundred miles on the Tannus but it seems good so far and I'm now able to run 25 psi where without the insert I was running 40-50 psi to try and keep the snakebites away! I don't have any real evidence, but I think my 29er is more prone to snakebites than my old 26 was. Maybe more momentum, maybe going faster. Maybe it's just in my head! Could be a future gmbn feature, does wheel size affect puncture likelihood?!

I still think running a tube is so much simpler. But you guys definitely got me curious about tubeless, so I'll soon convert my trail bike to tubeless to experience the difference myself. I have a 3.0 tire bike and have heard that Cushcore might make wide tires squirm less. I'm not really sure I want the added weight, but I find that getting the right PSI with tubeless is very sensitive. If I want to run as low as I can go, about 10 psi, I will feel a lot of roll in corners and can burp air out if not careful. Maybe I could really smash corners with Cushcore because I could run 9-10 psi and not worry about the tire squirming a lot or burping?

What I can't understand about low tyre pressures is the manufacturer spent a looooong time getting the profile just right so the side knobs dig in when their meant to, not dragging when upright but supportive in the turns. Yes the suggested PSI on the side is a bit of them covering their asses but is it not also the optimum range found during testing? Then we bung them on, cough in the valve and ride it about with the side wall calling mercy. What I'd like to know is what pressures are run during testing? Are they designed in profile and construction with the expectation we'll run them that low? And if run at the suggested pressures are they that bad? Does the rubber suddenly find grip by biting through rather than smothering the ground.

Low pressure, even with inserts, is begging for a sidewall tear. By backing the sidewall you're forcing it to fold vs flex. This will significantly shorten the sidewall life for aggressive riders on rocky trails. Plus you need to add 25% more sealant, it interferes with sealant circulation, and the insert adds significant rolling mass. Climbing is significantly impeded because your pushing that extra mass up the hill. Just run normal PSI and use proper bike to body balance and you're going to stick to everything possible. Just stay away from the impossible. Physics wins the day every day.

Hi, what's the easiest insert to install on dh casing Maxxis or continental tires 27.5x2.40?. Should I get te xc inserts for those tires. It's because the cushcore o bigger inserts pro it's too difficult to install, or It might damage the rim and tubeless tape. I think it's a good combination dh casing tires with light inserts xc.

Big dude on a big E-bike. That's the same thing I have going on. If the bike weighs 54 pounds, and I weigh 200 pounds, even those big 2.6 tires need a little bit of help if you ride with zero mechanical sympathy for your steed. Popping over obstacles......happens less often on an E-bike, so outfitting it to plow into shit and survive is where Cushcore will probably be saving my bacon.

It's not like you should be all clipless or all flats. Use both. Practice skills and have fun on flats skidding around. Ride clipless on race days or when you want to smash climbs or just have less to worry about. Riding all clipless will hurt your technique unless you actively work against forgetting about your feet and riding flats will keep your feet on your mind even when you switch back to clipless. It's all about weight on your feet regardless! I switch back and forth and don't do anything on the trail differently (or feel) whether I'm smashing a downhill or falling off the bike. Feet come right out with Shimano SPDs.

Joe Bibby For me, my first clipless ride was like my first dropper seat post ride. Once I was used to it, I didn’t want to ride without it. Flats can be fun, but the extra horsepower and ability to put the back wheel wherever you want is great. I highly recommend the Crankbrothers clipless system. I’ve got the Candys on my trail and XC bike.

When I got my optic I bought some cushcore pro. Used them for 2 weeks and never again. Just can feel them when pedaling and I hate it. And I look at it if I destroy my wheel then I just have a excuse but buy some I9 wheels..

when people talk the advantages of tubless they always forget you can put the sealant in the innertube and get a wheel that cannot burp is just as puncture resistant if not more that also doesnt go all super squirmy in the sides. also it makes tire changes a lot less messy.

one eye It’s not actually just as puncture resistant. The main advantage of tubeless is being able to run lower pressures for better grip. If you do that with a tube then you’re very susceptible to pinch flats and sealant doesn’t help with those.

You can’t use these kind of inserts with tubes.. they are exclusively for tubeless. Tubeless sorted your punctures, inserts protect the rim, that’s it.

Hello great video guys, I weight 135 lbs with 26x 2.35 tubeless maxxis ardent tires I'm running 28 psi ft 30psi rear I ride in phx desert lots of rocks how low psi can I go at my weight without inserts?

I live in a desert area myself, 198 lb, ebike, 21 psi front, 25 psi rear, without inserts, never smashed a rim. It depends on how agressive you ride I guess.

Yo can use a kind of foam (floating device, insulating foam) and it will go between the tire and the tube, hopefully it work!
