I noticed at 22:50 you were wondering what “cats eyes” were. I actually watched a small documentary video about them. On the highway, those reflective little bricks on the ground that show you the lanes are called cats eyes in some places of the world. I think what’s the sign is trying to tell you is if you go down the road, there are no reflective “cats eyes” on the pavement. Neat detail by the designer!

Whenever me and my family take a trip to SD, I don't usually notice the THINK! signs. More often its the roadside memorials I recall. There's a ton around Pine Ridge, which is to be expected. For those who don't know, there's a very long history of drunk driving there, moreso than other reservations, which is saying something. You can thank White Clay, NE for that. It was a town on the NE - SD border, just outside the reservation. Due to the legal loophole that selling alcohol on the res was illegal, White Clay geared most of it's economy into selling booze to the Natives. Countless people died due to this predatory distribution. Tribal activists did a bunch of protests to stop the selling of alcohol and eventually won. White Clay is mostly a ghost town now, and for the better.

yea but why? isn't it kind of weird to have sort-of comical signs where tragedies happened?
@declanedmison54427 ай бұрын
@@M4caberguy I wouldn’t call them comical, exactly. They’re probably there to call attention to drunk or distracted driving. I’m not sure how effective they are, but they can certainly be striking if you stop to think about it. I’m pretty sure they put one up for every person who died, so you might see two, three, or more right next to them. There was a road I passed with four “Why Die?” signs right in line, covered in wreaths and flowers.

The animal calls in the video you wondered about are Tawny Owls. They're pretty common in the UK (and I think their short eared relatives in North America). You can tell it's a tawny because it sounds almost like an ocarina or flute type scream. Barn owls have a waaaay screechier/screamy (reeeeeEEEEEee!) sound to them in comparison to the (wooOoooooOOoOoOOOo!). Anything that goes "hoot hoot" like a the stereotypical owl is usually a great horned owl. You'll notice these sounds more often in scary mod maps/other games once you hear them once or twice. The church, reservoir, pub, and layby with burger van are all such familiar sights for me that its wierd to see you wandering around and psychoanalysing them. It perfectly captures the vibe of a sleepy rural hamlet out in the moors. I believe the birdcall at around 30:25 was in fact a Curlew, a bird native to the region. For me this map was so much frustrating due to the lack of things to do, interiors, etc. Even bangclaw or Big City had more stuff than this map. Plus, the abrupt world boundaries... really wasn't a good map, to be honest. On the other side.. what a wonder experience did you deliver in this video! The little acting at the beginning to spawn the flashlight and the glock, the always on-point comments, the jumpscares with the fewest surprises of the map (alarms, seeing silhouettes in the windows, etc) really won today. But what really got me was the speech about wanting to be "a story who somebody else tells" - the first time i heard this "trope" was in Fallout 3 afterword (if I'm not mistaken), when Moira was talking in her book about the protagonist (Lone Wanderer): "Just about everyone in the Capital Wasteland has a story about the Lone Wanderer, even though precious few ever really knew him. But that doesn't stop them from telling crazy tall tales about how he saved their lives, or blew up a mountain, or ate a car or something. Heck, if you get Simms drunk, he'll tell you that his dad died because of the Wanderer, even though he saved the town. People can't even agree on whether the Wanderer was a man or a woman, much less a saint or a monster. But they all agree on one thing: the Lone Wanderer changed the Capital Wasteland." This is something that lands very deeply for me, the desire to be remembered, to do something different that makes people remember us, even only our feats (while not remembering exactly even what gender the person is). Sometimes i wonder what is the "legacy" I'm leaving in this world, i think more people share the same feelings about it as well. BTW, i know something: you are leaving a very special story with us. Thank you so much for your work, and the experiences you sharing with all of us. For me you are the best gaming youtubers out there.

I mean it's honestly a very well done map imo, just because it doesn't have a lot of interactivity doesn't mean it's *bad*, it's incredibly atmospheric, and despite the bulk of it seeming to be made from assets taken from various Source games, it absolutely nails the look and vibe of more rural English towns, despite the fact that games like Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike and Left 4 Dead don't take place in the U.K., the creator has only used custom assets where they really need to, far as I can see, and have just let creativity and attention to detail handle the rest - that alone is something of an art form in and of itself.

22:40 “No Cats Eyes” Refers to the road line markers that shine when a car’s headlights hit it. It got its name because the road markers had circular reflectors that shined two yellowish light back at the driver, which looked like a pair of cat eyes, because they shine as well. (The road markers were invented by someone copying the structure and features of a car’s eyes. This also kind of shows us a timeframe of when this map is taking place in. This place could be taken place around the 1960’s or newer, when road signs and laws mandated to have the markers. Roads, that don’t have them, have a sign notifying the driver that there aren’t any.
@jamiebonczek80262 жыл бұрын
Just saw others posted about it. This I guess is more of a specific definition. Also, when a car runs over the markers, the reflector part moves down, which is cleaned by water that gotten into the reservoir in the marker case. So it cleans itself.

I like this way of looking at things. After all it's probably just an atmospheric, but mostly functionless map, but there's still so much to see and think about if you allow yourself to do so. It starts in an abandoned british small town as well, where everything looks kinda peaceful, but also very creepy in a very subtle way.

After using google maps looking up the road names and numbers and names of nearby towns all roads (pun intended) lead me to Leeds in the UK or its surrounding area. There’s even a place within the Leeds suburbs called Blackmore (spelled differently). There is however a Black Moor that shares the same name and is a tiny off set village way off from where this maps set to take place but it doesn’t look like the map at all minus a cross roads. I believe this map to be inspired off of the small villages that surround Leeds or Manchester. I’m aware the map may not be based on any real place but I got bored and tried to find the inspiration for such a beautiful and atmospheric map.

(sorry for being late) I HAVE A THEORY FOR THIS MAP, the theory is that we died due to a car accident while returning home to Alpha Centauri, that explains why we start with a car that doesn't work, why is the road blocked by police and explains the 4 light years in the road sign that represent the infinite distance between us and our home (and the reality). After death we are trapped in the place and time of the accident, and that the door with the red light that leads underground and that emits strange noises is actually the door to hell.
