Input and output on same frequency make it so you can use your frs radio, which won't do duplex.

Interesting setup. I may have to give that a try after my move and when I get some time. I'd ideally like something that could use a cheap sdr for receive and a mobile for transmit though. I also love the Potatoe Patch cup, I haven't been there in probably 20 years but looks like it's closed now.

@MCTGMRS780092 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! A GMRS radio should not be able to do that. But those good ol' Baofengs will. Lol
@barrykelly2722 Жыл бұрын
Don't have GMRS license but I have HAM certification. I've heard (and it just might accidentally be true) that GMRS signals are dependent on line of sight. If that is true, the higher the antennas placement is, the better. I'm trying to put a repeater on a water tower but they always catch me when I'm almost at the top. So....good luck.
@MCTGMRS78009 Жыл бұрын
Lol... We're currently up about 65 feet and the results are much better than the 35ish we were at prior. Trying to get plans to get around 100 feet up and that should work perfect for what we're needing. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
@matthewHizzle11 ай бұрын
Maybe because higher modulation frequencies don’t travel as far as say 2 meter band. Some guys on long wave can hit people on the other side of the world with small batteries. Sometimes it just works out signals accidentally bounce off the atmosphere or objects and signals are good!

I'm thinking one of those software repeaters or even just setting up with a base station antenna would let you know if you have a good antenna and a suitable location. Watching a half dozen videos at "The KZbin University", my first step will be to get an outside antenna and coax. I am semi-retired but work a seasonal job here in Minneapolis and am trying to connect from home which is about 3 miles away. Can you recommend an antenna? I just read that your Ed Fong didn't work for you. I'll search at your other videos. Thanks for the education!
@MCTGMRS780092 жыл бұрын
So the Ed Fong worked but definitely not as well as Harvest BC200. I think your current plan with that antenna will get you up and running perfectly!

What's the range on the poormans repeater?
@MCTGMRS78009 Жыл бұрын
Range will vary based on antenna height, antenna type, terrain and several other factors. We are currently getting about 30 mile radius with about 28 watt output on a 11db gain antenna. 📡

I’ve been considering building something similar to this with an Ed fong. I know range varies with all the variables. But what kind of range did you see with the Ed fong and the amplifier? How high was the Ed fong? And did you have the regular j or his Collinear?
@MCTGMRS780092 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment & watching my videos!!! The range on the Ed Fong was a little less than what we currently have set up. The height of the antenna was about 34 feet. The issue I think we had was that in the schedule 20 pipe the sun would cause it to bow pretty bad and after about 8 months of the Texas heat it was permanently bent. We had his GMRS tuned collinear unit. Since taking it down, I gave it to another guy in our group to use at his place. Looking forward to hearing how your setup works - PLEASE keep up posted!!!

@@MCTGMRS78009 You can use two Wouxun KG-1000G and a duplexer, programmed as a 40W repeater. Probably what I will install in the mountains but increased power doesn't mean much more performance because 400Mhz doesn't do that well around trees. Good luck!
