GNARBOX may be dead: according to PetaPixel, GNARBOX app is currently unavailable for download since beginning of December 2021; social media of GNARBOX seems to be inactive since November 2021, and the company Mygnar, Inc. behind GNARBOX, online search appear to be "forfeited". I've set all GNARBOX purchase link inactive across all my video for now, except if GNARBOX become active again.

Same, while I’m excited about what the Gnarbox can do, it is expensive, especially the just announced Lacie seems to do most of the thing the Gnarbox do, like managing files between external drive and itself, backup to both itself and external drive

it's way smaller so it can fit in a pocket, and is weatherproof so you can use it anywhere, plus with a laptop you can't do autobackups just by plugging in an sd card. it's more for pros than consumers

I feel like it's marketed a bit weird in this video. Gnarbox themselves and most other places it's marketed for use outdoors / In the field. And for that I can understand paying a premium for something like this if you'll be in less than ideal conditions for laptop use/have to travel as light as possible. But bringing it instead of a laptop for a worktrip to London where you'll stay at a hotel, I don't immediately see the appeal.

I have the budget version of that - not as advanced or rugged, and no display. I bought the WD Passport Wireless 4TB for SD-card backups, works fine but a bit slow. 175 USD.

i just use an otg cable, usb hub, a normal ssd and sd card reader or simply my camera's usb cable...this is so expensive

If you have an android phone, consider getting a type c hub with pd support. Then plug in pd charger or a battery pack to the hub then plug in a card reader and a storage device to the hub. You can charge your phone and power the devices as you are transfering files

Another budget option is the Ravpower FileHub. Bring your own storage devices and get SD card backup, plus wireless access to the drive/card contents from your phone, iPad , etc. all for about $50 USD

Problem for Gnarbox is they released this thing the month that Apple has finally unlocked iOS to access external mass storage devices. So a lot of the original use cases of the Gnarbox are just no longer true.

it being an external computer that you can offload rendering too has always been the main reason for the Gnarbox, so I doubt it's not much of a concern to them.

Gnarbox needed to invest in their software, they should've made a program like luma fusion for Android. I was an early backer on their v1 gnarbox on Kickstarter. I reviewed the original gnarbox which was basically the same but it was an hdd instead of an SSD, but I ended up taking the video down since it was giving them a lot bad publicity. I actually believed in the company since day one. I still think theirs a void for a luma fusion type of editing program that can not only work for Android but across all interfaces, like Adobe are trying to do with Rush. But a smaller company can definitely eat into that market by dropping one for Android with the promise to adopt iOS and windows later on. Long comment for this long video, hope all is well at home. Question.. Generally I like to edit video off my phone, however when editing high resolution videos/photos quality seems to drop and lags in my 4k videos accur as my phone doesn't seem to support files that big.. If I use the hard drive, will I see similar results in terms of quality drop?

SD cards would be good for most people, though if you need two copies you have to use a camera with two card slots, and if you shoot video most of them can’t record 4K to both cards simultaneously. Plus Gnarbox do much more than just backup.

Yes and its so limited. U cant do full edits on it as has so many limitations... And u need a computer to finish an edit anyway. As a backup machine i guess it works ok... But other much cheaper options

It is expensive, but it really comes down to would you pay for the extra things it can do. No other similar product can do transcoding, and only Gnarbox give you that speed when you use Lumafusion with it. To me though, if the new Lacie can manage files between itself and an external drive like the Gnarbox do, the Lacie would be enough for me and it’s cheaper. So my point is, the Gnarbox is expensive but with extra features no one can match; only matter is do you need those features. I don’t think it is overpriced on that sense.

It is a wonderful product in theory (which is why i bought 1) but in practical use it is just nonsese as it falls short. It has zero benefit to take on a trip instead of a laptop ... A laptop u can leave processing or rendering file in ur hotel room while ur out shooting or sleeping anyway. If the gnarbox produced premier pro files with the clips still all cut up... AND allowed Luts AND did stabilization of clips... Then maybe it would worth having. BUT it doesnt... So it doesnt save any time than using a laptop as u have to use the laptop anyway. It just makes no sense buying gnarbox... Sorry

U spent 80% of this video going on about how great the gnarbox is just because it can backup and make copies of files.... Who cares haha... A laptop can do that much easier. If u are taking an ipad on a trip it is hardly any size or weight saving than a slim light laptop which can copy files but also do *!#× loads more than a gnarbox or an ipad. The main bonus of tbe gnarbox is making simple edits by wirelessly tethering it to your phone and not needing much processing power... Thats why i got one... But in practice its sort of a pain cos so many limitations in editing (u cant use LUTs, it doesnt export ur result as seperate clips, u cant do transitions, u cant stabilize footage etc etc - so u have to finish the edit on a laptop anyway and then are editing a single long file of clips put together so have to cut them apart to modify each one) and in reality its alot easier just to use a laptop (u can convert all ur 4k or whatever files to some super low res format to edit on any crappy powered laptop and replace the files with the high res before u do final output - which im very sure u know) ... So i dont use the gnarbox and although its a lovely product in theory... Its sort of useless.

SD card reader to Lightning (22€) SD to USC-C 28€ one for my iPhone one for my iPad. Dumpling 128 GB SD cards to my iPhone takes about 7-9 minutes

Lok Cheung I mean 128GB raw on my Canon 5DIV is about 1900~ photos I rarely shoot through a full card in a day. And having the 512 GB iPhone sure fits 3 cards at least. I mean it is cheaper alternative if you already have the phone rather than 900$ box. :)
