I cannot understand why this is not more performed. This quartet is beautiful. Influenced by Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakoff.

The reason there's so less thumb up is mainly because this piece is too beautiful that people forget to push it, I recommend to mention the thumb up in the front of the video.

@@klop4228 Not even 60 years. Satie was already doing minimalism by 1917 (arguably before). Long before Cage 'discovered' him.

Thanks for pointing that out, my mind was already blown (didnt know Rachmaninoff wrote a String Quartet), and now this?!

The first time I listened to this piece, I was in a good mood. I don’t know whether it was the music, the fact that I was listening to a slightly distorted old recording, or both, but when the second movement finished I was left with a profound sense of despair. Listening to it all the way through again, I feel this feeling once more. Very few times in my life do pieces actually make me feel almost… disturbed?

The same. The second movement is the essence of foreboding.

I feel like this in a lot of his music. He goes without using distant sounds but you still feel like you’ve had an emotional turn for the worst

I've wondered a couple times if it wouldn't be possible to fit together the four string quartet movements that Rachmaninoff wrote into one larger four-movement work. I feel like the scherzo of the previous fits really well on the end of the second here, and book-ending the piece with the Romance and the first movement here would work nicely to start and finish in G Minor, but I'm not sure the Romance works as either an opener or a finisher. Still, worth thinking about imo.

Personally, I can see it working like this: Sergei Rachmaninoff - String Quartet in G minor, Op. posthumous. Movement 1 - Romance: Andante espressivo (String Quartet no. 1, mvt. 2) Movement 2 - Scherzo: Allegro (String Quartet no. 1, mvt. 3) Movement 3 - Andante molto sostenuto (String Quartet no. 2, mvt. 3) Movement 4 - Allegro moderato (String Quartet no. 2, mvt. 1) But, again, that's just me.
@dang58744 жыл бұрын
For me, it would be: 1.- Allegro Moderato (from No. 2) 2.- Romance (from No. 1) 3.- Scherzo (from No. 1) 4.- Andante (from No. 2) I consider the movnts from SQ No. 2 more effective, so we open with the strong Allegro and end with the funereal Andante; the eerieness of the latter, with Isle of the Dead vibes, will end the quartet in a similar way to the Isle, giving it some "modern" feeling. This proposed structure also kinda matches the one of The Bells (which ends with "mournful bells"). Having all this elements, it could be not only an effective quartet, but a Rachmanonvian quartet. (English is not my first language, so I hope you understand me)

@@TheodoreServin Agree with you especially the order of movements, I think this completed 4-movement string quartet can be Rachmaninoff's Op.46 (his last published work is Op.45, Symphonic Dances).

After listening two incomplete Rach's String Quartets, combing them, I think we could 'rearrange' them as one complete string quartet! 1st of No.1, 2nd of No.1, 2nd of No.2, 1st of No.2, this order would be best to play.

Agree with you, I have the same thought. Probably this completed 4-movement string quartet is Rachmaninoff's Op. 46 after his Op. 45, Symphonic Dances, hahaha.
