Something ive noticed in Matriarchal animals, Its more about Social skills than pure strength most of the time Male Hyenas are significantly less social than the females Elephants, The herds are matriarchal while the adult males are often wandering alone Orca pods are lead by females and males are often only allowed on the outer most parts of the pod , unless there babies You can even see this is Patriarchal animals, Female lions are a lot more social than male lions

They hunt more like dogs, having adapted for endurance rather than for speed. They were the only dog-like canids on that land mass until the land bridge connected the Americas with Eurasia. @@Samsen_ It's more that it's not the best comparison. Eevee is meant to be completely ambiguous, its designer outright said they didn't want it to look like a cat, dog, fox, or any particular mammal, and from its name, descriptions, and the like they keep that consistent. Poochyena and Mightyena are definitely meant to be hyenas with a little canine, they have multiple traits unique to them (particularly brown hyenas) both visually and in their bios, and their names outright include the word 'hyena'. There's no ambiguity intended in what's they're meant to be, it's almost spelled out what was intended for both. And while both are fictional creatures, that doesn't mean there wasn't a difference in direction. Purugly is also a fictional creature, but it's clearly a housecat with some stereotypically ugly traits included, it doesn't look like an ambiguous mammal like Eevee and you can easily tell it's a cat. Both Poochyena and Mightyena are more akin to it, the hyena is the primary focus, it's not meant to be an ambiguous mammal.

Fun fact about hyenas in culture. The idea of a wereheyena is not someone who turns into a heyena but a heyena that turns into a person in some parts. They are seen as evil wizards, known as Bouda. A word often targeted against blacksmiths as their work with fire is traditionally seen as dealing with magic. Saying they cast spells and curses and eat and rob the corpses of people. Bouda is used as a slur, and in Ethiopia is used as one especially in an antisemitic way against the Jewish population of Ethiopia. As blacksmithing and working with kilns is such a common career for Jewish Ethiopians, who have long been discriminated against by the Christian majority population of Ethiopia.

Whenever I would see “Mightyena”, I would always think, “It sure doesn’t look like any Hyena I’ve ever seen.” Then again, until now, I only really knew of the one. While I couldn’t really understand why that name in particular, I always figured that, by its design, as well as Poochyena, it was simply an attempt at bringing in something that resembled a wolf. The way it was often portrayed in the anime only helped me to further see it that way. I think that that’s likely why, whenever I’d see a game playththrough of what are supposed to be canines that include the two, it never crosses my mind that it might be a bit questionable.

Mightyena has always been a personal favorite of mine. I admit however, that I originally failed to recognize the obvious name references. I always thought Mightyena was a wolf of some sort, even if watered down a bit. Later on, I realized the name is literally a mix of 'Mighty' and "Hyena'. The problem I have is that Hyena's all have a very distinct body proportion with their slightly odd looking necks and what almost feels like a hunchback design. Yet Mightyena looks very natural and wolf-like. Additionally, the defining feature of a Hyena, their laugh, is lost on Mightyena. It does NOT have that creepy cackle. In the video games, its "cry" KIND of sounds like it, but in the anime it doesn't do that at all. (Unless I'm remembering wrong) But yes, I love my doggo who isn't actually a doggo, but is yet still a doggo in my heart. haha It's a shame Mightyena has such lackluster stats in the games. Mediocre stats fitting of early routes, a typing that doesn't do much to save that. Move pool can be interesting when you introduce breeding options, but otherwise quite lack luster. A mega form or evolution would be amazing. And with Legends ZA, maybe a mega is on the horizon? Give it a secondary typing that is relevant and we in business.

The is a tradition in one culture that says hyenas eat evil sports and there is a tradition of someone feeding the hyena to attract them to their towns so they can do this. One of the most positive portrayals of hyena I’ve ever heard I just wish I remembered where in Africa they do this.

Forgot to mention the important part of "why" hyenas looks so much like dogs - its a process called "convergent evolution" when a species finds themselves adapting to the same ecoligical niche and end up developing very similar traits.

1:11 that carniovra diagram is outdated as skunks are no longer classified under the mustelidae family. They are however members of the museloidea superfamily, so a they're only a step or 2 removed

Fun Fact: a factoid is, by definition, something that resembles a fact but is not a fact. It really bugs me when someone uses the word to mean "trivia fact."
@BusinessSkrub19 сағат бұрын
Factoid has two definitions, that's the second definition. The first is "An insignificant or trivial fact". Trivia, of course, being the root of trivial, so, quite literally, potentially trivia facts lol.
@andrewolson547119 сағат бұрын
@@BusinessSkrub that definition is the result of the misuse of the word. Just because it's accepted, doesn't mean I have to like it.

I have to make a correction. Wolverines and badgers are mustelids which are within Caniformes, making them closer to dogs then they are to hyenas and cats.
@blackroses969 сағат бұрын
I mean... Hyenas are FAR from the only species who hunts in packs and until their prey is exhausted. Lions do the exact same, if I'm not mistaken.
@J_JoLT429 сағат бұрын
It's a slight simplification, but yeah they are part of the family that are essentially classed as 'feline-like' which includes things like mongoose, fusa and cheetahs (yeah cheetahs aren't true big cats) but they are much cats as something like a meerkat is (which is also in the same family)

Mightyena and poochyena are my favorite pokemon. Honestly I think it is based off of both hyenas and dogs considering that it's body shape is more of canid. Whenever I see its behavior in the anime too it is very doglike. I think Mightyena is a weird hybrid of hyena and dog brown hyenas and shepherd dogs especially

Didn’t watch the vid yet but hyenas aren’t dogs or cats there more related to mongooses and meerkats. I feel like the dark type is given because of the way they are depicted in culture. In reality lions actually steal from them way more often.

Feliform does not mean felid or feline, it just means the animal falls more into the cat-like than dog-like option; taxonomy only recognizes a binary, cat-like or dog-like. Calling Mightyena a cat is literally the same as saying Urshifu and Pangoro are dogs: it's not a cat, it's a hyena

i'm not into pokemon, but watching this was pretty cool! i'm pretty much obssessed with hyenas so watching this video made me super happy with the hyena facts sprinkled in it. hyenas are pretty misunderstood and are genuinely an amazing animal in the animal kingdom, so it's nice that you shared some facts but also its stereotypes as well :D

Actually, they only laugh and giggle when nervous or wary. Which is why they do it when stealing kills. They may have numbers, but taking from others can still be dangerous. And it could lead to the deaths of multiple pack members. This can greatly shift power dynamics in the leadership, and also overall weaken the pack. Less members mean less force to take food when needed or to hunt.

I still think we need a proper spotted hyena Pokemon. Maybe a Grass type physical attacker than has inspiration from venus flytraps, Strong Jaw as an ability and a new Grass type biting move. Not a lot of Grass type Pokemon based off carnivorous beasts.

FunFact: Spotted hyenas used to be a native fauna also in Europe for millions of years until they disappeared around 10,000 years ago, the striped hyenas also around 10,000 years ago and an the cave hyenas around 7,000 years ago. However, the exact reason why this happened isn't known but it is suspected that it was caused by global warming during the end of the last ice age (but this theory alone doesn't explain their extinction and it has only recently been suggested that human activity acted as a major catalyst for it).
