At 47:42 Mike says, "standard hold which is left turns." That is incorrect. Standard hold is always RIGHT turns. Yep, for reasons unbeknownst to anyone (other than FAA), holds are right standard whereas traffic pattern is left standard. Therefore, the SLI hold pattern sketch was drawn incorrectly if the turns were standard (right). Of course later Mike corrected himself and flew the parallel entry (appropriate coming from N) and got himself on the right turns hold. Great presentation!

You're the ONLY one who caught that! You should've seen the chat and Q&A light up when I said that. I always leave a couple mistakes in there, just to see if anybody's paying attention, and it turns out, you were! Good job.

SLI does have a published hold with left turns, which may have been part of the confusion

The tip on using Heading rather than NAV with GPSS when flying a hold was fantastic for US. Tested it with our old Century 21 AP, works great. Thank you!!!!

So glad you figured that out! In most aircraft I'm familiar with, GPSS works through the HDG mode of the AP rather than the NAV mode, and that's not always well understood.

Hey Mike, I'm interested in looking at other videos you have produced on this navigator, BUT the KZbin link you have typed at the 4'22" mark and the 1hr 21' mark don't go to a page that is anything aviation related. I think the "/Channel/" part of the link is messed up. Thanks for the "good stuff". I have been looking for advanced feature content on the 530. I fly only X-Plane and have the GNS530/430 combo. Thanks, Doug

Hi Doug, thanks for pointing that out. I didn't have it set up yet when we did that webinar, and it's changed. The new location is: kzbin.info. Hopefully that works for you!

Are the 430 and 530 the same, except for the screen?
@CapnMikeCFI3 жыл бұрын
Bottom line is, they both can do the same thing. The 530's screen has a little better resolution, in addition to being larger. The Nav page 1 is slightly different: the 430's is sort of just a data display page, while the 530's has an arc compass displayed over a map in addition to that information, which I find VERY useful, and much prefer. The 530 has six buttons across the bottom while the 430 has only five, so the VNAV feature is accomplished through a menu instead of a button, but the capability is still there, and some of the other screens are slightly different. A used 430W can be found for purchase used for around $3K, but the 530Ws are closer to $8K.

@@CapnMikeCFI The 530 also displays radial and distance from a selected VOR on Nav Page 1, where the 430 does not.

@@mannypuerta5086 Hi Manny! Good to see you here... Long time no see! I thought of you recently when I was down at F70 and saw a couple Twin Otters there and wondered if you were still doing that? Yep, you're absolutely right. Part of the benefit of having a little more real estate available on the display.

@@CapnMikeCFI Nope. Retired now. Just flying the 185 (G5/530/430 equipped) and the occasional tailwheel/mountain/backcountry training.
