Find your meaning of life, create your meaning of life, then go all the way
Tom O'Bedlam Spoken Verse: / spokenverse
Poet: Charles Bukowski
The Laughing Heart; Roll the Dice
Narrated by: Tom O'Bedlam
if you're going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don't even start.
if you're going to try, go all the
way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.
go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you'll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.
if you're going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.
do it, do it, do it.
do it.
all the way
all the way.
you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, it's
the only good fight
there is

This comes from Taoism/Daoism. As Confucius said, ”A man who understands the Tao in the morning can die contentedly in the evening. “ Meaning if you have ever lived one complete moment, you can be ready to die.

"You will be alone with the gods" this part really hit me. Studying late into the night as others party and go on and do things without me or when im just tired and my determination begins to falter I really feel the lonliness start to set in. I used to have a lot of friends before I gave my main life goals more attention but now I often spend days alone working in the hope itll all pay off. It makes the journey more bearable knowing that Im on the same road as those heroes in history.

I never thought a poem would sum up exactly how I felt in life. Being the bottom 1% in wealth in the USA and still going for my physics PhD over the many years of starving and fighting depression this poem perfectly sums up my thoughts. I didn't want to be just another graduate I wanted to be the best and in order to do that I had to sacrifice everything even sanity, health and love to get it so that I wouldn't be insignificant. I had to go all the way, had to give up everything to be the best and it's cost me everything and I believe soon it will pay off and my name will not die like others.

You will suffer, and you will suffer, and you will feel pain, and you will hurt, and it will be unbearable. This is not success, this is life .If you are to live, for some strange odd reason you must endure, but if you not only endure. If you also embrace it, use it, learn from it, then not only will you survive, you will surely thrive. Suffering is your reward for living, what you achieve from it is totally up to you. #MP

Ligeia D.Aurevilly if one so happens, by either accident, trickery, insanity or by vanity to veiw the Void and finds only truth and not Love - one can still aspire towards it with Hope and Faith. Love exists - the same as Hope and Faith - at least for myself I was able to find them all - in the search for Truth of self. We could all have good thoughts for those still in search for the ones that never made it back and the ones still there. Let your heart go out. Its a great day, hope yours is smiling.

I know sports are kind of the easiest route to show something like this, but could you have included other non-physical pursuits. A scientist staying up until the early morning researching, a law student practicing their case in the mirror over and over again, a photographer going to great lengths and heights for the perfect shot. There's more to life than just being physically fit and there's more ways to push yourself that don't involve lifting weights or running 10 miles, it would have been nice to see that as well.

+Red Walker i agree. alot of motivation always focus on sports, working out and physical fitness. there is more to life. i was thinking maybe a guy constantly getting rejected by girls but keeps trying until he's successful. or a soldier in war fighting for his country. or maybe even a person trying to break away from an addiction, anorexia, drugs, etc

I often find it funny, how incredibly beautiful this poem is. It isn't about the meaning, it is about him. It is his regret of living as an alcoholic his whole life, loosing everyone in the process, dying alone ultimately. The irony is, the writer never at any given stage of his life actually lived up to these words. So therefore these words are words of regret, remorse, and guidance, and through that one should be inspired. The moral of the story is here, life is too short for bickering, fighting, and falsehood. Get on with it and meet it head up, R.I.P Mr Bukowski.

moving to a new city, losing childhood love ...and everything started falling apart, this poem gave me hope. it made me think that I am not the only one to make sacrifices. I wish she will never find this comment, cause she ran after a guy the day after I moved to a new city, and depression hugged me like a true friend for three fucking years. every night I told myself ''go all the way, don't just die today. Now from a few days back I started enjoying my own company again like my childhood... I can sleep now...if I shine ever, then will come here again and comment. isolation is a gift, don't commit suicide.. something amazing is going to happen.....we were not the same my love, but still love you. and love you all beautiful people here..

I agree with some of what he said but i'm a big fan of this channel and had to share this. The title of this poem is, (no caps), "roll the dice." If you're going to share a poet's work, it's proper and frankly, legally appropriate, to provide the poem's proper title, the form which it was written in, and from which collection the piece was procured. Another courtesy would be to provide a link to where the collection can be purchased. Just for the record, the title of a poet's piece is as germane to the poem as the body of the poem itself, and chosen quite deliberately in most cases. As a lover and student of Mr. Bukowski's work, I'm certain he'd want the poem shared in its entirety--which includes the title. Thank you.

I respect you for voicing your voice, and for enlightening the crowd. Credit should be given where its due; especially in this case, the title could've been included. Don't mind those who don't see value in them, because they don't see value in themselves to begin with.
