I too am new. I’ve never used a CAD program in my life...75 years young. Thought I want to learn something new. I worked with 123d Design a little. I think if I can get a handle on building the conduit box in your Beginner series, I can build most anything I want to send to my printer (ender 3 pro) new to that too. Built it about 3 weeks ago. Mostly print stuff for my RC AIRPLANE HOBBY. Actually new to that too. You’re a wonderful instructor. I look forward to more of your excellent videos.

Thanks Lars. You are a very competent teacher. I have many years autocad experience having worked as a draftsman for many years but I am just a beginner in 3d printing and Autodesk fusion 360. Very useful information. Hopefully in the next week or two I might actually 3 d print something! AS for the xy plane...I was told it came from paper drafting originally and drafting desks were traditionally slanted so that the drawing appeared as if X was horizontal and y was vertical...therefore when 3d drawings were required the 3rd dimension was naturally z, towards the viewer. This then translated into early cad programs and so forth it just stuck. No worries. I like how you get around it...As for tolerances also great information. I will keep watching your lessons. I was wondering if you were going to remove the lid from the heart shaped box, then flip it over, attache it along one side of the box per se, and then call it all one object, then save it as an stl file, and just after printing is done, break it apart as if it were a plastic model for example, like the ones we used to build as kids. theoretically you could have all your parts on one file, connected by some plastic sprues, and then import them to stl and cura and so forth.

Just want to say thank you, to you, and to Autodesk. AutoCAD changed the course of my life about 26 years ago (a story for another time). In the last 2 years I have been experimenting with 3D printers and "making" Anet A8 started it all, an Ultimaker 3 Extended showed up 6 months later and a Muse laser recently. I first used TinkerCAD to make my designs then found Fusion 360 and never turned back. I enjoy watching your videos, I aways learn something that makes "making" faster, easier and more fun. Please keep up the great work you do and know how much your appreciated!

Thanks, Lars. Just getting started with Fusion 360 and I'm very excited about being able to make 3D prints. Given that this video was made close to 2.5 yrs ago, what 3D printer make and models would you recommend today (November 26, 2020) ? ( I know the marketplace is changing rapidly and don't want to invest in a printer made by a company that's "on the ropes".) As a hobbyist, my purchase criteria for a 3D printer are: Cost range $500 to $1.5K USD, high reliability, working volume say ... a cubic foot or thereabout, filaments available at a reasonable prince. Many Thanks for your insights!

Lars , I do a ton of 3D Printing and never thought about the STL not being that accurate compared to CAD file and understand what you saying about triangles. Is it possible to change from STL file to a more accurate file, so that the circles can be perfect circles etc. Is the 3D printer industry thinking of changing the file type ?
@cadcamstuff
@cadcamstuff 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Vaughan Lundin Thank you for watching! So when using the 3D print function within Fusion you get an option to increase the triangular count, that is really the only thing I can think of you can do. I know that other software has the same function. But, if you start with an STL file, you are stuck with what you got. You do have an option to increase the triangular count in the mesh tools within Fusion, but it is important to remember that you are increasing the triangular count of the original file. I will think that as 3D printers get more and more accurate STL will be replaced with solids, if not someone has already :-) Have an awesome day! BEst, Lars

Jeepers, this video was from 2018... any chance you could update the video with regards to exporting as Binary or ASCII? does it matter? When I transfer the STL to simplify3D it tells me the size is too small and it needs to re-size. However I sized everything correctly in Fusion360. So I'm guessing it has to do with the export method? Thanks for your informative videos btw!

Great and helpful! Only part is missing - how do you apply those tolerances when you realize what it is for your printer. Just scale whole body? But that may not work in every case - lets say I have a pipe on one side and a cup that covers it inside and outside. If I scale cup up then inside will be too big and not fit and vice versa.

Hello Lars...great video. A question for you....Where do I find settings in Fusion to change Cura file. The reason I ask is I recently upgraded from Cura 4.1 to Cura 4.10.0. Fusion cant find it. To work around this, I went into program files and there were 2 files (Ultimaker Cura 4.1 and Ultimaker Cura 4.10.0). I moved the Ultimaker Cura 4.1 file to my desktop leaving 4.10.0. Went into fusion and hit make, 3d print, selected the component and chose Cura in the Print Utility dropdown box.....Nothing. I then went back into program files and renamed Ultimaker Cura 4.10.0 to Ultimaker Cura 4.1....success! Need to know where to change this in Fusion as it is not good practice to use a run around like this. Would be interested in your comments please. Thanks, Geoff D

You recommended making box and lid as components from the start -fair enough- but- when you went to save as STL the menu said one file per BODY, not component. I found this a bit confusing. maybe needs more explanation in a later video, or is it a mistake in the menu?

Hi Lars. I was following along with this video and using the newer Fusion 360 GUI. I was unable to trigger the dialog where you were showing that you could save to STL out of the file menu ....and if you had multiple components, it would generate separate files for each. Does the new GUI not have that modified dialog with the specific field for separate file per body? Or perhaps is my file just wrong? My current file appears to have two bodies in it although I am a little embarrassed that the parts appear to be on two different plane levels. Those planes are like gremlins.....

Someone may have already mentioned this, but I honestly didn't scroll through the comments. Right around the 18 minute mark you mention the x/y/z coordinate system was because of the wild west of CAD years. It's more about math. When you graph 2D objects on plots x is your horizontal axis and y is your vertical access. The z access was created to apply to depth, which moves in a positive direction toward you and negative away from you. It's not at all random, but completely planned. Just an FYI.

Hej Lars Just caught up on your videos. Great resource to learn Fusion. One question I though would be good to cover, is how to arrange components for printing. For instance, you make an assembly of components where some components are designed in place on angled surfaces of other components as the reference surface of the sketch. In Fusion, that's fine. You can see how the parts fit together, and you can project features between the parts. But the position doesn't work for 3D printing, and not all slicers have the feature of Cura or Meshmixer to position parts flat on the build plate (e.g. Prusa Slic3r). This means you have to rotate the parts in the slicer with the exact angle that the part is rotated in Vision relative to the XY plane. Preferable it would be fantastic if the Vision 3D export dialog could include a selection option to select a face to be exported as the XY plane. So for now, I've created a copy of the component that I then rotate and position correctly relative to the XY plane for printing without changing of altering the component used for the actual Fusion design. But is there a better way to accomplish that?

That is a Haas CNC controller used for educational purposes. It simulates uploading a program from Fusion or any other CAD/CAM program into a real CNC mill or lathe.

Yes...your printer is what we call a "Prusa clone"...it still uses the same ardurino controller board.... I have an original Prusa i3, a Hictop Prusa, and a FlashForge. My KZbin channel shows the building and calibration of the Hictop which apply to all of them. I started with SketchUp CAD, and Cura 3d slicer four years ago making 3d platforms for RC control aircraft to mount cameras and FPV gear.

Hey Lars I've been watching your tutorial on creating that conduit box and just want to know if the same principles apply for CNC matching with Fusion 360. If so, what's the next step to create the file that the CNC machine uses to create the design. Thank you

CNCs use gcode as well, which is what the slicer software produces. Your CNC should come with (or should recommend) a tool path software that can take the STL and convert it to the appropriate gcode for your CNC. The process is the same, as STL is practically an industry standard so basically all software supports it.

@@F3Ibane So ones I create my design in CAD I go to CAM in Fusion 360 and does that then create the STL file which I then send to my CNC Machine (which has MACH 3) and that converts it to G code. Ones that's done is it ready to mill the design? I'm an absolute newbie to this so have lost to learn. Just trying to get my head around all the principles. Cheers

Hello,sir! First thanks for the very nice video! Now I have a problem like: if someone uploaded a multi-components model to Fusion360 and made it open source to download, but when I download it, it only outputs the full model with .stl, ,obj, whatever. In other words, I can't get the separated model of each component. It just outputs one file. How can I achieve my purpose that I can sparate the models of components from that one-file?

By the way, I have not installed Autodesk360 yet. I have tried 3Dmax and Solidworks, but they all produced a whole body and I can't select any component any edit them. I once tried the way on some blogs, where you need to adjust the import option from ‘entity’ to ‘surface’. However it will end up warning you "too much surfaces!'' and fail opening it.

None, they want you to use their specs and part numbers in order to generate purchase orders.....nothing in basic hardware is "patent protected", and has been around for the last century. Using "Creo" software and doing this same thing generates a bill of materials and purchase orders including the CNC programs for machining the tool and dies to mold these parts, whether McMaster, Carr Lane or DME molding components. They all have a stake in this and provide the 3d library components to buy from them.

Non of your videos deserve a thumbs down, always up. All plastics change size once printed, I print a 50mm block for each type of plastic I buy, measure the results and then in the slicer program use the % bigger or % smaller and use it as a multiplier to get the correct size and print again, then mark the multiplier % on the spool so I can use it if I need a precise part in that particular spool of plastic.
