This usually happens when one or the other is about to be brought up on charges, and is in danger of losing substantial funds and assets. This way they don't lose everything. The one spouse gets 50% of everything, if there are children under 18 involved, an extra percentage can be acquired for the children, aside from the 50%. After the spouse who is being charged has the court problems solved, they wait one year, remember how much they loved each other, and get back together. It's pretty common. That was terrible about the abortion though. Killing a baby because you don't want to be embarrassed. That's evil.
