Luke Skywalker is designed around the Hercules story. He comes from a common place and gets caught up in a giant battle for the world. At the end of the story, Hercules enters the underworld to face Hades and he comes back out of it, doing the unthinkable and saving the world. Luke, out of faith of his own strength in the Force, enters the underworld of the throne room of the Emperor, to face his father, a god, Darth Vader, and the Emperor himself. He emerges out of the throne room victorious and does the unthinkable to save the galaxy. Lucas designed most of the Star Wars characters as an amalgamation of mythic archetypes. Excellent video
